Gather 'round hockey nerdz, the NHL season has started
Last year, the Blues made one of the most improbably runs in any sport, going from the cellar in January to winning the Cup, primarily on the back of the greasy ass, 200-foot-playin', fueled by chaw and cheap beer man rocket on the right of this photo
The only thing more Canadian than this image would be drunkenly crashing your pick up truck through a Timmy Horton's
The new season is shaping up to be one of the more interesting ones yet, with lots of interesting plot lines.
* The Blues quest to repeat was majorly boosted by the acquisition and then long term extension of The Good Justin Faulk, who is one of the better offensive defensemen in the league. Even though the Canes seem to be on the upswing, they just weren't going to resign him.
* The Rangers and Devils went from likely lotto teams to up and coming playoff hopefuls over the course of an offseason due to lady luck going their way in the draft, and some smart moves in FA and trades. As a result, the Metro is once again looking like a blood bath (except for the Jackets, rip) Your fearless idiot is personally thrilled to have this rivalry be meaningful once again.
* The Jets and Jackets had two of the absolute worst offseasons, managing to lose all of their good talent either via free agency, getting fleeced by the Rangers, or because they decided to drunken boating and eating hot dogs was better than perennial disappointment.
* The Minnesota Wild actually did a smart thing by cutting their idiot GM after one year, after he managed to get fleeced in every single possibly trade or free agency signing. Their savior is Bill Guerin, who has no NHL GM experience, and apparently got his bloated, greasy ass stuck in a tanning bed just before his first meeting with the media
* RFA madness is finally over, after the Mitch Marner domino fell, and everyone behind him got considerably less than what everyone expected. Everyone eagerly awaits the point where the Leafs can only afford their big name players and has a bunch of AHLers in their bottom six and blueline.
* While the rest of the league got better, Ken Holland's big splash was exchanging one lump of shit for another, so that McJesus gets to spend his peak years dragging around the corpse of James Neal rather than Milan Lucic. Granted, it would be hard to make a decent trade when there is so little that other teams want, but Holland has proven to be a shit GM when not given an unlimited budget and several HOFers. A separate thread will be created for a gofundme for Flaccid's liver.
I really think Z is gonna have 90ish points this year. He was really good last year on an ass team, and can really play in any scenario well. He's now got a legit top flight winger to play with and their other options (Kreider, Buch, Kakko) are all pretty good too.
I had to throw away my underwear after these beauts
The Rangers D is going to be horrible until they get rid of Staal and Smith and shore up those bottom pairs, but they've got a bunch of good young guys coming up. And I think that offense is pretty legit (they really need a 2C, because Strome is not it) and Hank is still good enough to make up for deficiencies on most nights. I really wouldn't be surprised if they snuck in as a 6-8th seed.
I know he hasn't scored yet, but fuckin hell, Kakko's puck control reminds me so much of Jagr. It's glued to his stick and he's just excellent at using his body to create separation. I would think he hits 50-60 points this year. He looks top 6 NHL ready now

Granted that game was the only Edmonton game I've seen this season, but given they've done little to change the team i would think they're just hitting some good luck in addition to being carried by the usual suspects.
I wouldn't be surprised if Neal ends up hitting 25+g again on McJesus' wing. He has slowed down but he's still a scorer and now he's shotgunning the best offensive player in the league. I just don't see how they compete with the bottom half of their roster.
Well they have had some lucky bounces here and there and that helps. But maybe these lucky bounces will give them the confidence and the margin to get in latter in the year.
I no longer have the nhl tv this year so I am unable o watch TBL games. The only one I saw was the Toronto game and it seemed like the old Tampa team but with a not so amazing Vasy. How were the other games? Anyone watched them to give some feedback on whats going on?
Im hoping that a slower than usual start will allow them to have the legs when the playoffs come.
I'm starting to feel that Hall won't sign extension with NJD. Wasn't that team supposed to be playoff team according to some hockey writes 'cos they got Hughes, Subban, Gusev and Simmonds.
first - i love you QH for making this thread. Delivered as expected! second - lol Devils, this is actually hilarious how awful they are right now. Are they the new Oilers? third - MacKinnon is probably as OP as McJesus. The speed of his hands is too much for current technology. Lastly - TBL do not look as great as they did last season, but i don't mind as long as they keep improving and getting back that mojo that lasted just enough to close the season with a league record only to get swept in round 1.

Well, they looked brutal in that CHI game, so I guess they're back on track.
I know it's only 10 games in, but I thought Rangers would be doing really well this season. Now that Zibanejad is out (hopefully not long) and Kakko is off to a very sluggish start, I'm not so sure..
He's been saying shit like that for decades. Thing is now he's talking shit about their viewers so they had to can him. Good riddance. Also helps he's 85 and Coach's Corner doesn't get the views it used to.
The amount of public money this guy got talk shit about euros/russians/french canadians/guys wearing visors is disgusting. But he is supporting the troops so it's cool I guess.
not a huge fan but he had his moments. The amount of poppies we could've bought with the millions in public money he made :D
"you said you didn't give a fuck about hockey &I never saw someone say that before you held my hand and we walked home the long way you were loosenin' my grip on Bobby Orr"
Having Marner list out his laziest teammates and then telling those teammates is so dumb it hurts my head.
I think Babcock was gifted some insanely good teams prior to Toronto (even then, they've had elite talent for at least 2 years now). I would think he should have at least one more Cup win from his time in detroit. But yeah top 10 in wins plus a ring he will probably be in some day
I can jerk off to that McDavid goal all day, it's so so pretty. I can't skate for shit but I know enough to know that his turn and go move there is just so stupidly good. I wish the oilers weren't such ass so he could get mainstream exposure
also re that Torts video, there is something so god damn Canadian and righteous about a hockey coach angrily pounding the podium and watching a Timmy's cup shake the whole time
it's amazingly dumb. They have been playing well as of late, and in their 2 full seasons of existence he took them to the playoffs and the Finals once... and as of this moment, that team is top 5 for all underlying stats but near bottom of the barrel in goalie play.
This is also the same GM who hired Adam Oates and Dale Hunter and wasted nearly a half decade of Ovechkin's career soooooooooo
also, reddit's NHL streams sub is getting shutdown. Keep on getting take down requests and reddit is cracking down on all of the things that made reddit reddit so you can get fun things like... the official NFL account posting in the NFL sub. Wooo.
I cannot wait until cable is dead, the only way I will pay for center ice is when they kill blackouts and I don't have to VPN around that
Penguins certainly have had a good December and January. They have all their games against the capitals coming up, which will be a big test to see how they perform against top-tier playoff teams. I think they have the pieces for an ECF or Stanley cup run. Then again, I didn't think they'd be swept by the islanders last year either.
https://www.nhl.com/news/gerard-gallant-has-more-in-the-tank-following-firing-golden-knights/c-314154702 lol what a ridiculous decision by VGK management. You have a coach that leads the team to SCF in theif very first season followed by another playoff spot and close series with Sharks followed by leading their division followed by being selected as an ASG coach and you decide you fire him. If anything this does more damage to the management than the coach as its very easy to see how dumb this is.
Ovi is having an insane stint, holy shit. Several weeks ago he was at 26 goals in 46 games, ranked #7 in the league and i was sure he's not getting another 50-goal season. Damn, the guy loves to score.
in all honest, his shot looks as good as ever and he isn't one of those guys who is relying purely on speed. He can easily score 30+ til he is 40. I wouldn't be surprised if he has another 2-3 years of 40-50 in him.
As someone who just occasionally follows the NHL, how dafuq can you have the best 2 offensive players in the world and still have only 66 points after 56 games played?

Because hockey isn't basketball.
Yep, and 66 points is actually not even that bad all things considered. Last year they ended with 79 points after 82 games.
I'm surprised no one posted about another hockey player finishing his shift and then dieing on the bench. That hockey is fully prepared for this event and the guy is alive again shows what the real toughest sport is
On February 15 2020 09:43 QuanticHawk wrote: also Kassian kicked someone because he's a retard lol
Fucking maniac, lol. Who kicks a player? It's like every once in a while he needs to remind the world that he's still Kassian and still somewhat psychotic.
Kase could be a legitimately good player there too, former 20 goal scorer on some meh Ducks teams. More importantly, they got him for the next 2 years at just 2.6m vs 6m for Backes. That is huge for a team that needs to resign people
between that and Ovie hitting 700 this has been a fun week for hockey
also in Rangers land, it is really weird seeing Hank ride the pin, but Shesterkin is so fucking good. He looks great behind an ass defense that has two other serviceable goalies looking quite bad.
love seeing Malkin get punched for being an ass. Dillon making himself a favorite with that one.
Hughes has been great. The Canucks trades have been weird though. They are making moves like they are a top contender vs a fringe team that may miss. They have a few interesting pieces at least so their next few years can be interesting
definitely didn't think today would end with the Rangers resigning the powerforward they were supposed to trade, trading the dman they weren't gonna trade, and their new star goalie Pelle Lindbergh'ing himself
All those hot takes from Flames media thanking the Oilers for gifting FUTURE ELITE FRANCHISE STAR SAM BENNETT to the Flames by instead electing to draft His Liege Lord L50N Drheartsaitl have not aged particularly well.

Hey man, they used to be way imbalanced towards having half-a-dozen 7th or 8th defensemen in the lineup each night, so I'd say it's progress.

Long live the Yamamoto Era.
And the last 20 years of hearing that the oilers were going to up and coming with so many high draft picks may finnaly be happening!
Haha, something you'd never hear from a proper Oilers fan. Give us 8 more superstars and I'm still making plans for the season to be over by December
Oooooh, are you in Calgary? If so, samesies. I imagine my kin need to project a certain amount of false optimism in order to maintain sanity. That and Edmonton has a lot of really obnoxious fans, for realz. A battle of Alberta would be the best hockey we've seen in over a decade!

Not NHL related, but hockey related. Liiga got cancelled as well, which sucks for SaiPa fans especially, because Ville Koho, who played in the club for 18,5 years and was the captain for 12 never got to play his final home game. The club organized him a night at the rink without fans and released some photos, I think this one tells the whole story

Maybe he will play another year, if not im sure they will do it up right for him next year.
He said that he would play one more year if he could but sadly he can't, lower back + calf issues.
Honestly at this point depending on what they are doing for next season and how delayed that might be if they push the playoffs going into September, I'd rather them just cancel and focus on next season, otherwise if this goes too late it might make the next season also shorter.

i had the same thought. I’d rather sack this season and play out the next in full, but i guess there’s really no guarantee of that still. They may well have chosen that path and found out unfortunately next season is also compromised to some degree? So, ultimately I’ll take whatever hockey we can get!
The Oilers are fucked. That locker room has a history of passing around bugs with even greater efficiency than it passes around starry-eyed teenagers from St.Albert.

lmao
It's not the same as the proper playoffs, but I will be damned if I am not really excited for this playoff. It has absolutely, positively nothing to do with the Rangers sneaking in due to the expanded format
Well, now that the top draft pick is going to one of the losers of the play-in round, some teams might just want to lose that round for that 12.5% chance to get Lafreniere.
hot damn guys 3 more days holy shit im so ready gimme that hockey i'll take everything. EVERYTHING Pens -Flyers first expo game i don't mind at all. Oilers-Flames that same day, are you kidding me? GO!!!
They’ll be better than a normal preseason if only just because it’s against the club they’ll be playing and people have been off so long but I fully expect it to be sloppy with the long layoff.

what a terrible game by rangers imo. They seemed slow, thin and clueless on PP. with this being BO5 they might not have enough time to get their mojo back.
Man the only comparable as far as that mix of insane speed and skill I’ve seen with my own eyes is Bure. I cannot get over how fast he is and the moves he does at breakneck speed

totally agree, this just looks like a prison for immense talent. Took Caps with ovi-backstrom a lot of years too, but they were top of their division/conference and legit playoff contender for a few years prior to winning the cup and not some cannon fodder. #freeMcJesus!
Don't underestimate the depths to which Chiarelli sunk this team and roster. It may take a few more years to undo that damage. I'm fully confident he could have undone Pittsburgh's depth to the point they stayed bad as well .
Organizational problems predate him, but those were different problems on a different roster. They cleaned house to begin the 'McDavid era' and then Chairelli announced his arrival by trading a 1st (Matt Barzal, fuck) and a 2nd for already-failed-prospect Griffin Reinhart. A sure sign of things to come. Soon he was getting rid of the likes of Taylor Hall and Jordan Eberle, effectively downgrading every roster position that wasn't filled by McDavid and wondering why the team got worse. He was one of those GMs that always thought he was smarter than everyone by trading his better players for other team's spare parts. He wears enough of that on his own, imo, even if the old-boys were still whispering sweet nothings in his ear. He would actively keep better players out of the roster and handcuff McLellan with garbage so that 'his guys' could get a chance to succeed. It was maddening.
With Ken Holland, it's been absolutely mystifying to watch a GM get fair value for trades. I didn't know that was a thing.
Could watch clips of McJesus all day long! The ease of matching someone elses topspeed and then casually accelerating even more while smootly handling his stick

I personally hate those kind of game. I would really hope that after the first OT, they at least go 4v4 for the second OT or something like that. I mean, it took someone to get hit in the face by the puck to then get a chance and score a goal :\
u know when they move to OT its “one mistake causes you a game” so teams are really tense and nervous, but the longer they play the more of a grind and “lets just finish this already” it becomes which leads to all kind of situations. You see so much just in one game
It's a shame. We needed one goal, any goal so that we didn't need to pull Demko. Well- it very often felt like an overmatched series kept in by our goal tending many a time. We put up a good fight and went down swinging.
With any luck, the extra week off for Tampa got McDonagh healthy enough that they don't have to run 11 F/7 D again. The way that the Islanders make life difficult and painful in the crease/slot/dangerous parts of the ice isn't gonna let them get away with double-shifting guys, especially if they have another Kucherov-like incident where they get bumped down to 10 F. And the 3rd line absolutely has to keep clicking for them to have any chance, it would be nice if the Cirelli/Johnson/Killorn line showed up with a little bit more impact for the series, too.

This core group has been close for a very long time and more and more im convinced that it will one of those teams that will end up always being close but never get it.
Back in 2004 it was not that easy to get NHL games and/or info around here so I didnt experience it the proper way. Im still hoping for a win now and being able to follow it in more detail
dang the finals deliver. Holy shit are we for a treat boyz. Its got everything - the goalies, the physicality, the emotions, the goals, the powerplays, the game misconducts and so on. Also, Joe Pavelski has a real shot to get the Cup, that would make a beautiful story. On the other hand, how fucking lucky/smart would Pat Maroon appear if Bolts win!
Shiet that was close ... Corey and Joe carried Stars last night, still fun game ... Now I want Bolts to win, however game 7 can be so fun as well! So mixed feelings ahead of game 6
Nice to see a legitimate top team win the cup this year. Teams and fanbases run the risk of taking too much out of a weird playoff format put together after people were away from hockey for months. But with Tampa winning, it's as if things kind of reached a logical conclusion in spite of the circumstances.
So McJesus has COVID. Poor guy, as if being stuck with the oilers for his entire career was not bad enough :/
On a more serious note, he is young and in shape, so I hope that he will make a speedy recovery or better yet, that he is part of the group of people that gets no symptoms.
The 2020-21 NHL season is being targeted to start Jan. 1, the NHL and NHL Players' Association announced Tuesday. The NHL paused the 2019-20 season March 12 due to concerns surrounding the coronavirus. Under the 24-team Return to Play Plan, seven teams did not qualify to compete in the Qualifiers based on points percentage.
Not many talks about how shitty this was for the 7 bottom teams, that really sucks.
Almost a full year of break yeah. That's not good for them. For tampa and dallas its great, you will still end up fully rested despite reaching the finals.
But it is such a looong break now. And then a jam packed season next year? that is going to be rough. Or will they reduce the number of games in the season?
Whalers, Nordiques, Panthers, Yotes, Caps are great retros. I want to like that Jets retro but that grey is awful. Calgary should have made Atlanta Flames retro

I think it went sour when Laine wanted more icetime, but PoMo prefers Wheeler over Laine and Laine is RFA next year and new contract is starting 7,5M$+. Winnipeg don't have that kind of money. So Laines agent said it would be better if Laine gets traded, althoug Laine liked to stay in Winnipeg. Dubois wanted out, prefered to play on big market team that Winnipeg ain't, and pretty much started to play shitty on purposely. Then there is that PLDs father works for Manitoba Moose. But yeah I think Columbus won this Laine + Roslovic (Ohio boy) for Dubois + 3rd round pick and jets retain 27% Laines salery. I have seen so many Jets fans wanting Chevy out cos' of this trade.
