unbelievable, the blast of the explosion must've propelled him and the front half of the car through the iron barricades.

I wonder who will be the lucky driver to get the Merc seat. Vandoorne, Russell or someone else

Sucks for Hamilton, but he's wrapped it up already. Bring on the reserve driver tests.

On another note do you guys think Grosjean will return for the final race?

Mazepin signed for Haas in 2021. Lewis is 100% out of both this GP and Abu Dhabi because of the covid rules, so both weekends are up for reserve drivers. Russell in Merc would pretty expensive for them, but it might be worth it to see what he can do in competitive machinery. He has the raw speed, but his wheel-to-wheel skills have definitely rusted in 2019 where he was in a class of 1. They'd need to cover Russell, William's reserve driver, and a payment for Williams because this is probably their best chance this year of finishing 9th in constructors for some bonus cash. Russell, despite his points allergy is the best possible driver in the Williams for a single race weekend. Would need just an 8th place finish (requires some luck), but with how poor Ferrari powered cars are expected to fare, it's very doable with just a handful of DNF's from the leading cars. Not sure how the math works out with a 9/10 finish as they would be tied on points. On another note do you guys think Grosjean will return for the final race? I don't think so. He had some rather severe burns on the back of his hands and his ankle was missing a boot, so he might not recover in time. I also don't know if he has a concussion or not, given it was a 53G impact. Even if his head didn't bump anything, that deceleration alone would rattle his brain. That would definitely put him out. I know when I had mine after a minor accident, driving after a few weeks was super disorienting, and I couldn't do focus for much more than the 10 minutes or so it took me to go to work. Definitely would be in no condition to race an F1 car. Other potential silly season stuff - Both Max and Albon were on the podium with Lewis, celebrating, yelling and spraying champagne etc, and based on what we know of Covid, Hamilton could absolutely have spread it to them since it was less than 2 days before his positive diagnosis.

Russell is technically a Mercedes driver after all, so they might very well have had a clause in there before lending him to Williams. I agree it would be really cool, but I also am very unsure on how likely it actually is to happen.

One thing I suppose to keep in mind is that whoever Mercedes pick has to have a seat made and has to get familiar with the car. Of all the options being discussed, Russell or Hulkenberg seem like the most realistic options. Vandoorne could take the seat I suppose but I wouldn't be shocked if Mercedes went for Hulkenberg. Vandoorne has done simulator work and stuff but hasn't raced in F1 since 2018. Hulkenberg has already shown multiple times this season he has absolutely no issue getting up to speed quickly in an unfamiliar car if need be (the fact that he's ahead of something like 6 or 7 drivers in the driver's championship continues to be hilarious to me). Russell of course would do fantastic too but putting him in the seat would be a much more complicated process. Whoever ends up in that seat will have a lot of pressure to deal with.

I think if Merc could've taken George, they would've for the 2020 season, but Claire didn't want to release him from the contract. From what I'm reading on reddit, there's apparently a large prize pool reduction if you fail to score a single point in constructors (guessing 7 digits). Merc would have to cover a portion of that if they take George, because he's undoubtedly their best shot at finishing 10th.
