Yea Kimi charge up at the start was amazing, getting up to P6 by lap 2. Overtaking LeClerc for P6 was the icing on the cake.

This weekend is going to be interesting. Track has been resurfaced very recently, so all the drivers can't get the tires into the right temperature window.

FP1 had pretty much all the drivers driving on ice.

FP2 was slightly better, but tomorrow is going to rain so it's probably going to just kill all that progress.

I actually don't know if Merc is favored this weekend. Their car is normally on rails, but with how the weekend is going, this could potentially be the most mixed up grid this year with none of the tires getting into the correct performance window (I heard something like 10+ laps to get up to temp).

Softs grain too quickly, so it's likely going to be a medium race(thinking about it, most teams have used up their hard allocation already).

Possibly even starting on the soft for a short run and then taking a couple long stints on the mediums I guess?

Well done Lance Stroll! Should make an interesting race, one of the few Tilkedromes that I like.

Absolutely insane qualifying session holy shit.

Lance on pole just ahead of Max.

RB made the right call to get Max onto the Inters, but Max just couldn't get the inters switched on in time.

He also got a bit unlucky being sent out right behind Kimi, so he had 2 laps where his tires would cool down before he could actually start going for faster laps. Very exciting tho. I hope the conditions are going to hold for tomorrow

Max was in his own league before everyone started switching to Inters. His wet conditions driving is just amazing and I was really really surprised with that lap from Stroll. Well done tho.

I hope this race is one of the final nails in the coffin for people who still think that Hamilton 7 world championships are just flukes or only "because he has a better car". Guy is a legit legend

Hamilton really ran away with this one Absolutely dominant performance from him. Went from like 30 seconds down on the leader to leading by 30 seconds, after running like 50 laps on a set of inters. Best strategy was definitely stay on worn inters til the end. Just enough tread on the left side to hold a bit of grip even through the damp patches, and the slicks to go around corners.

Pretty gutted for Stroll. He crushed the opening wet phase of the race, was really out on his own for a bit. Call to bring him in to get new tires was definitely a bad one unfortunately. Needed to either do it 5-10 laps earlier, or else just hold out til the end. He just had way too much tread for the conditions and went backwards until he wore them down.

Vettel and Leclerc both had pretty stellar drives today. Leclerc sent it to try for the 2nd place, but didn't quite pull it off. Still a Ferrari 3/4 though, which is pretty good.

Both the RB's just didn't seem to handle the conditions too well, and had some scary moments.

Worst driver today I think was definitely Bottas. Just was absolutely nowhere.

Bottas had zero confidence in some corners. Hamilton on the other hand...the guy is phenomenal. Best driver of his era by a wide margin. His ability to drive fast while keeping the tyres alive is unmatched. He also never makes mistakes, at least in the last few years, he's been almost flawless.

Great drives from Perez, Vettel and Leclerc. It's a shame that Checo still has no cockpit in 2021. After years of consistency, he really deserves a shot at a top team. Only possible opening is @ Red Bull. Albon is talented, but maybe he simply lacks grit and experience to compete in a top team right now. After what happened to Gasly, RB might be a bit nicer to Albon. But they also need help for Max.

Hamilton is a genius of F1 driving. I on the other hand hope this race is one of the final nails in the coffin for people who still think that if Hamilton wouldn't be on the grid Bottas would easily take championship because its "Merc". Give me a break. Mercs are dominant largely because of Hamilton.

Then why is Bottas easily in 2nd place when he's not that good of a driver? Merc lose a lot of their edge in strange conditions such as heat or rain, but in normal races, an average guy like Bottas finishes top 2.

few things:
- I didn't say Mercs were not dominant, I just attributed it largely to Hamilton being with the team (both on and off the track)
- Bottas is not easily in 2nd place, he is 27 ahead of Verstappen with 3 more races to go. I do agree that he'll probably still finishes 2nd, but see point 1 for why.
- Ferrari are complete garbage this year and Verstappen has not finished the race 4 times. Out of the races where they both finished, Verstappen is 5-4 vs Bottas head-to-head on a definitely worse car
- when Ferrari still had a descent car (2018), both Ferrari drivers outscored Bottas (who had his 6th season in F1 at the time)

I've always claimed that Bottas is an average driver at best. And while I'll allow anyone to have a bad weekend now and then, I think he showed us this Sunday exactly why. Both Merc drivers qualified somewhat near each other, and while one spun 4 times and ended up at the very back of the pack, the other went on to win and become a 7 times world champion. Rain is the great equaliser, and Bottas just showed us what he's not capable of if the cars are no longer the deciding factor

Rain being the great equaliser is a bit of a myth. It requires a somewhat different skillset and can change which cars are good. But it's mostly about which cars can get the tyres to work. When it was still very wet Racing Point and Red Bull were by far the best cars, only when a dry line formed Hamilton really ran away with it.

I don't disagree, but I don't think it's a secret that skills count for a lot more than the car in rain races, even if some cars (and setup, let's not forget) are definitively better at handling rain. And I don't think I'm wrong in saying that without exception, all of the greatest drivers have been good rain drivers. Again, that's not to say I don't think you couldn't have a very good driver who just wasn't comfortable in the rain, but it is a very good indicator.

Lewis had a very fair take on it in the press conference:

Yeah he beat Bottas, but Bottas is literally against a GOAT. If Bottas gives 100% week in, week out and on an average day can qualify within a tenth of Lewis, that's better than a lot of second drivers on other teams. Look at Albon, Vettel etc. It's rough being #2.

Well, we're onto the last 3 races of the season. Next week will be fun. Curious to see how this week will go.

On Bottas, despite being in the best car he's in a really shitty spot. He's against probably one of the greatest drivers of all time at his most dominant. The fact Bottas gets consistently within a tenth or two of Hamilton most qualifying is quite impressive. Lewis is just on another level some days and a lot of the drivers have said as much.

I'm quite curious how Vettel will do next year. His last race was quite strong and he seemed much more like his old self than how he's been the last couple years.

I'm worried for Albon. I hope he's not out of F1 next year but it seems like he might be which sucks because he's obviously a good driver. He's had a kinda shitty run of luck the last few races despite being quite fast when not dealing with issues or bad strategy. I found the criticism of him last race frustrating because no matter what he did, he would have got criticized. The track was a mess and very difficult to overtake on for anyone who wasn't Lewis at the end on a drying track (Max spun trying to pass and Max is a wet weather specialist. Most other drivers weren't really able to pass at all). Had Albon just sat behind Perez the media would have claimed he wasn't trying hard enough. He made one small mistake actually trying to put pressure on Perez and pass him and it hurt his race so naturally he got criticized despite him actually trying to make moves. The media continues to expect Albon to match Verstappen despite Verstappen having tons more experience and being the main focus of the team. Red Bull said again last race that Albon wasn't using all of the new parts while Max was yet that was ignored again. Like you know the media stuff's bad when Red Bull is having to come out and say that they're not running equal cars while also saying Perez, Hulkenberg, and most other drivers in F1 today would not really be any closer to Verstappen. The media keeps pretending Ricciardo matched Verstappen in qualifying when he didn't in 2018 and was roughly 3-4 tenths back on average, just like Albon is. The only difference is usually there'd be a second gap between the top 3 teams and the best of the rest so even a bad qualifying would net Max or Ricciardo a 6th place.

The media treatment of Albon reminds me a lot of how they were with Kimi at Ferrari from 2015 to 2018 where it seems like a target was painted on his back and no matter what he did he got criticized and the media claimed he didn't deserve his seat and constantly said he was about to lose his seat to some other driver.

You must not be watching the same news feeds as I am, as I could only see that Albon was mostly praised for the wet weather race. With the exception of the one spin, he drove very well.

Kimi at Ferrari was pretty dang bad tho. Kimi is a previous World Champion, and drives like he doesn't care any more. I know that when he described F1 as "his hobby", it was meant mostly as a joke, but he literally drives like it is. Sometimes, like two weeks ago, we can get small peeks into how brilliant he can be when he's in his element. But mostly he's just nowhere. Should add that Vettel wasn't (isn't) any better either.

Kimi's actual performance was kinda beside my point. My point was that it seemed like once every few weeks F1 media would breathlessly report about how he was about to get the boot at Ferrari and <insert driver here> was about to be signed to replace him, and this happened constantly for the first 3 years I watched F1.

It just seems like older F1 media basically has nothing to actually write about other than rumours so they pick a topic, beat it like a dead horse until the topic goes away, then finds a new topic and repeats the process. This season was Albon and a couple others. A few seasons back it was Vandoorne versus Alonso at McLaren and in that case it got to the point where Alonso got annoyed and started publicly defending Vandoorne from the media.

I do think I probably need to find new news sources for F1. Most of the ones I currently read feel like they're written for and by boomers who just want F1 to be how it was in the 80s and 90s. They largely feel more like tabloids than actual news sources and are quite negative a lot of the time.
