Binning Perez off for Vettel is extremely harsh after all he did to save that team. Its not a move i would have made, hopefully he gets a seat at Haas or something like that.

This official announcement was clearly planned to be a big F U to the prancing horse car company on their 1000th GP start. Perez already had a few months headstart to find a new team, hopefully it will help. I'm assuming Alfa if Kimi retires or maybe Haas. Other unless a new constructor comes in like Porsche suddenly changing their mind.

Yup. Red Bull's track comment on Instagram was Albon saying "There's realistically only one corner you can pass on for the entire track", which... oof.

On the Vettel/Perez news, I feel bad for Perez since he got done dirty. I'm happy Vettel's staying in F1 but how Racing Point handled Perez is shitty. I would bet Perez ends up at Haas next year since he still has Carlos Slim as a backer and brings a bunch of money with him. Honestly, I think IndyCar would be a better place for Perez now. The chance of him getting a good drive in F1 is slim and he could really show his skills in IndyCar. With less experienced or weaker F1 drivers like Ericsson and Rossi having success in Indy, someone much more skilled would do quite well over a season.

edit: Also yeah, that timing for the Vettel announcement to take the wind out of Ferrari's sails for their 1000th race sure is something.

The problem with F1 is that, exactly due to the hardware being so different, and cars behaving so differently that a driver can look like a champion at one team and then like Bambi on ice in another (See recent examples: Vettel, Gasly, Albon, Ricciardo), it's pretty impossible to know. I mean George Russell, who has not lost a single qualifying to his teammate since he joined the sport, finishes most races at the very back of the grid simply due to his car being terrible. Considering his achievements, he could very well be the best driver on the grid, but unless he is put in a competitive car, it's impossible to know. Even comparing teammates doesn't always seem to work, as one car could be drastically different than another. (See: Red Bull)

That said, there are still things you can pick up on. How daring, how convincing, how one is able to reset after a mistake, brilliant overtakes, performance under pressure, and the most important one of all: How they drive in the wet. Wet is the great reset, as it shifts the importance from car's performance to driver's skills in a drastic way. Every one of the greatest drivers in history have always been brilliant in the wet.

Based on these factors, I have a personal list which I am sure people will disagree with. The names on the list are not in order, and I should add the caveat that this is their current performances, not at their heyday.

Top tier: Hamilton, Max.
Second tier: Sainz, Norris, Leclerc, Albon, Ricciardo, George
Third tier: The rest.

S tier drivers - Hamilton, Verstappen, Leclerc
A+ tier Drivers - Vettel, Ricciardo, Russell?
A tier Drivers - Bottas, Hulkenberg, Sainz, Norris, Gasly, Magnussen
B tier Drivers - Kimi, Albon, Grosjean, Stroll, Perez, Ocon, Latifi
C tier Drivers - Gio, Kvyat

S tier - These drivers are ridiculously fast.
A+ - Just a cut below. Russell is here because he walked to a championship against Norris and Albon, just needs more experience with wheel to wheel driving because he's been a class of one for a year. Winning quali battle like 29-0 at the moment, which shows remarkable consistency while pushing hard. Was debating dropping Vettel down one more tier, but I'm not sure how much of it is the car, and how much is him slowing down.
A - Upper midfield drivers.
B - Lower midfield. Stroll ~= Perez ~= Ocon.
C - Probably shouldn't have a seat on pace any more. Latifi gets a pass in this category because he's a rookie in a Williams, and has actually looked surprisingly okay. Was debating putting Kimi here because hes not the driver he once was.

Kimi has stopped caring a long time ago. He's stated repeatedly that this is just a hobby for him now (Which in itself is somewhat hilarious. "So what's your hobby?", "Oh I drive F1 cars"). You can still get a glimpse now and then of what he once was, but he really should just retire and give someone else the seat.

I really do like Nico Rosberg's analysis of the track:

It's not just the skill, it's the nuggets he drops like 1mm of ride height is worth about 3 hundredths of a second, so finding the minimum ride height you can run makes a sizable difference to the speed around the track.

https://f1-insider.com/f1/f1-vettel-aston-deal-sebastian-lance-schlagen/

This article leads me to have absolutely zero sympathy for Perez. According to this, there was another "out" to his contract in addition to the buyout that we heard about earlier. If he was behind Lance in points after the Italian GP, the team had the right to terminate the contract with no pay, and this clause was in the contract when it was first written. Stroll's podium last race was the nail in Perez's coffin.

If this is true then this is absolutely inexcusable. Perez was going out to restaurants with friends and taking pictures with fans during a COVID crisis, knowing that if he contracted COVID he would be out for a week or two. This is while he knows that this clause exists, as well as the fact that Vettel is gunning for his seat. And then he has the audacity to pretend like it's the team treating him unfairly. Give me a fucking break, you caused your own demise here.

Mugello track looks awesome from a viewer perspective; i foresee yellow flags and safety cars and overtaking during the race.

Potential things to happen: Shredded tires, exploding engines, tired drivers making mistakes.
Things that wont happen: Overtakes.

Perez caught covid whilst in Mexico which he visited because his mother was very sick. I doubt there is a driver on the grid who would have acted differently in that scenario.

The F2 race today was quite good but F2 doesn't suffer from dirty air issues as much so overtaking is a bit easier (side note: Dan Ticktum is still completely insufferable. How that guy has a seat in F2 after all the garbage he's done is a mystery).

Interestingly, if Perez doesn't find an F1 seat, it sounds like Zak Brown is willing to help him get a full-time IndyCar seat since McLaren already has two cars and has capacity for a third if Perez's sponsors are willing to work with McLaren on funding the seat.

Red Bull look pretty strong at Mugello. It's tough to see what Albon and Verstappen's gap was this time because Albon didn't get a second lap in Q3 because of Ocon's spin, but in general Albon looked stronger this weekend and given Red Bull finally confirmed that he is running an older spec aero kit than Verstappen, he's doing decently. If Mercedes screw up at all, Verstappen will probably be there to take advantage of it.

I dunno where Leclerc pulled his lap from but he did quite well. Several of the drivers right behind him suspected that he might not be able to hold that spot in the race though. I wouldn't be shocked if Ferrari went completely for a qualifying setup given that overtaking will be difficult.

Absolutely nothing wrong with going to visit your mother.

What was wrong, however, was going out to restaurants and clubs with friends outside your bubble, with nobody wearing masks. This was on his wife's insta before she took it down. Also wrong to approach fans asking for pictures, and take lots of pictures in close proximity with them, many of which have been posted online as proof. This was entirely poor judgement by him, and it's sad that his off-track actions most likely led to his lack of a seat next year.

He would've lost the seat anyway , they would just pay some compensation that is agreed upon early termination , there is never a contract written in any sports that won't allow the employer to fire his athlete , if the athlete is a successful one he will probably have more then just his salary payed to him , but nonetheless the clause about Stroll ahead of Checo is just a way to save money , Stroll snr wanted Vettel for a while.

safety car after 3 turns.
on overtakes, i'll give that they might not happen but that'll be because the drivers will manage/take care of their cars.

EDit: wow, another one just after the first safety car ended.(maybe red flag)
yea, race stopped.

I was not aware that Bottas was allowed to restart a race like that. Weaving after the safety car has gone in is illegal exactly for this reason in pretty much every other motorsport in the world. It makes it impossible to see when the frontrunner goes, because cars are going all over the place. So if he goes late (like he did), people behind are going to set off before he does and crashes ensues.

Getting a compensation for breaking contract is 100 times better than just losing it for nothing, no?

I don't think Perez is going to have a huge issue getting another seat tho. I'm sure Haas would appreciate his sponsors, or Alfa Romeo will need someone like him if Kimi finally retires. As someone mentioned above, Indycar would be a good choice as well.
