Several drivers have already said that safety car restart rules need looking at because it's been getting to be dangerous to do the restarts since Hamilton, Vettel, etc. started doing extreme versions of backing everyone up a few years back. It's only got worse since then and it seems like something like this big crash was bound to happen. That was a great race otherwise though. Despite being a bit tricky for overtakes, the one place they do have for overtaking is a great spot and it allowed for a lot of good ones. Ricciardo and Albon both put on a show today. Very happy Albon finally got his podium though I was conflicted because I really wanted Ricciardo to as well. Red Bull need to get their starts under control (Horner even said as much) since with their Honda power unit it seems like either the start is amazing or horrible and nothing in-between. On pace though, the Red Bull is getting quite strong. Even Albon, who isn't on Verstappen's level, was matching the Mercs when he was in clean air at the end there. Stroll's Racing Point with the new upgrades also looked quite strong. Well at least until it hit the wall. That was a scary crash since it seemed like there was no warning for him. It's fun having F1 at challenging tracks that push the drivers hard. A lot of them looked quite tired at the end. Way better than a lot of the boring modern tracks where at the end of the race the drivers look like they just finished a nice brisk jog. It sucks that Russia is following this race since that track is terrible. Bottas continues to seem like he's choking. He just can't get that bit extra needed to beat Hamilton. He comes close but then fails every time now. | ||

But Albon's pace did look a lot better compared to the rest of the field. Just not up to anything that can challenge the Mercs | ||

Pretty good high level overview of the leadup to the crash. Just a couple people getting mixed messages and cars going 200kph at collision time vs valteri going in 3rd gear. | ||

1) there was a heavy head wind which facilitated the natural overtake on the DRS main pit line. 2) until you hit the finish line you can keep the pace you wish, and everyone must legally follow your lead. those are the rules. the reason why Bottas did what he did was to avoid for Hamilton to overtake him on the restart with that amazing slipstream. personally i think what he did was stupid, and it backfired, but he was completely in the right here, even though at the back what happened was very dangerous. Also, wtf is up with Verstappen and Red Bull? they are blowing away their chances, if they ever had one this year. Its like Ferrari strategist 2.0 , that car was out before they hit into him. you don' t lose 8 places on the grid for nothing at the start. Feel bad for McLaren, they had an aweful week-end, how to see them on podiums again soon. at least Norris got some points in. Got used to back to back weekends so much this season its gonna be a hard wait for Russia | ||

Edit: Raikkonen locking up and hitting into Russell, breaking his left suspension and ending his race; Vettel spins; Hamilton overtakes Bottas on a technicality; Verstappen still up in there; maybe it will rain Bottas and Ocon out of the race, power and hydro issues; Raikkonen and Albon 10 and 5 second penalty; Albon retiring as well motives unknown Norris in third still not pitted having electronic isses, they trying to solve it from the box/walperez on his tail; his teammate for this race hulkenberg down in 9th Things a bit slowed down: biggest event is Hulkenberg passing Vettel, both German drivers, and this is the Deutschland (Effeil) Grand Prix Daniel P3 first Renault podium since 2012! | ||

I couldn't help but notice he has more points in two race starts than all of Alfa Romeo, Haas, and Williams combined. Ouch. Obviously he's in a better car in those two races but still. Ouch. | ||

Any team should be happy to have him, and i'm super annoyed we have some other drivers really struggling to adjust to F1, and at the same time you are holding on to Kimi and Alonso (really?) while Hulk in his prime does not have a seat. What a waste really | ||

He has raced in cars capable of podium finishes before, but he couldn't achieve that top 3 finish. He has even been in races where he was on track to reach podium, but then he bottled it. With that in mind I understand why other teams would pick other drivers above him. | ||

Yeah that's a pretty big flaw in the FIA's rules unfortunately. From various reddit comments, it's likely Stroll ingested Covid and it entered his system through gastro related means, which is likely why the nose swabs didn't catch it until much later in the infection. On a side note, seats for next season are filling up. Williams - Russell might be out, for Perez? Would be a very undeserved end to the king of qualifying battles and an F2 champ, without ever driving a points capable car. Merc's driving academy rightfully deserves flak for being fucking awful at promoting talents. Haas - Grosjean and KMag out. Mazepin? and Shwarzman? RedBull - I don't think Albon makes it to next season unless he has a real turn of form. He's in a car that rightfully should be finishing 4th just about every race. His racecraft is also pretty tragic TBH. He could pull the ridiculous divebombs last year, because his car was so much faster that people would just yield, but this year, when he's at the same pace as the midfield, he just can't overtake cleanly, and gets stuck behind cars he's faster than when they don't just let him by. Even then he's ruined several races so far this season diving up the inside and overshooting it. Fair chance of seeing Perez or Hulk in this seat IMO. Definitely the most coveted seat on the grid by experienced drivers. Also probably the worst seat to have as a rookie, because Max doesn't have off days and doesn't make mistakes, so you'll be crucified for being slow. Alpha Tauri - Gasly I'm sure will stay. He's been lightning quick ever since his return to the B team. Tsunoda I think has the second seat if he gets the superlicense points, although with Honda pulling out I'm no longer so sure on this. Alfa Romeo - Kimi might retire, Gio sadly I don't think has the pace. Could see some Ferrari academy drivers here(Schumacher? Illott?) In total, 7 seats potentially up for grabs still. | ||

Last 5 Races Leclerc 42 Points Vettel 2 Point Quali P14 vs P4 Completely unacceptable, amateur mentality and behaviour. Last season he constantly hit his team mate too. Racing Point Should have kept Perez, much better. A good idea would be to let him go and have Hulkenberg step in for the rest of the races at Ferrari this season. He just needs to leave. | ||
