That wasn't in any way shape or form Max's mistake, despite what the commentators said. Yes, Kimi wouldn't have been able to see him on the inside, but Max didn't teleport there. He would have had to know Max was going to be somewhere on the inside, and should have given the space. Don't get me wrong, it was a racing incident for sure. But it definitively wasn't Max's fault.

Massively unlucky for Norris. He deserved that fifth.

And praises to Albon. He really did deliver. With a sample size of exactly one race, he seemingly proves that Gasly really just was that slow.

I'd say that Albon was a little slower than Gasly, but considering its the first race, definitely potential there.

Also, idk, if you're ahead by that much, I don't think the onus is on you to give space. Racing incident yes, but I'd put more blame on Verstappen for that judgement.

So happy for Leclerc though, F1 has a bright future, just one more constructor team joining would be nice, can't wait for 2021.

Slower than Gasly? How? Why??

Well Gasly was top 6, 5x. And most races all 5 of the other Ferrari, Mercedes, and Reb Bull finished, plus it was a little fluky 5th place with Norris engine problem, and if Sainz was there, and if nobody crashed 95% he'd finish in 8th place at best, which is worse than the average Gasly performance.

Im saying this race was worse than the average Gasly one, but considering it was his 1st one, he had more potential. And not fair comparing an easier to pass on circuit + even the Haas' were able to pass Riccardo, the result makes it seem it was a better performance than it was is what I'm trying to say.

What.

Gasly stats this season:
Australia: Started 17th, finished 11th.
Bahrain: Started 13th, finished 8th
China: started 6th, finished 6th.
Baku: Started 20th, DNF
Spain: started 6th, finished 6th.
Canada: Started 5th, finished 8th
Monaco: started 8th, finish 5th - his best performance of the year.
France: started 9th, finished 10th.
Austria: started 8th, finished 7th
Silverstone: started 5, finish 4th
Germany: started 4, DNF
Hungary: Started 6th,finished 6th behind Sainz

He finished top 6 in 5 races out of 12.
He had one race where he started outside top 6 and made it into the top 6.

He has been garbage since the beginning of the year relative to Max.

In the vast majority of races, he utterly failed to pass the sharp end of midfield drivers, and gets passed by Max (see Canada) who started behind him.
At worst Albon is a sidegrade and going by his brilliant driving this race, it'd be hard to argue that it's not an upgrade.

It's simply unacceptable to be on average over a second slower than your teammate in the same car in both the race and qualifying.

The only surprising thing this weekend was that Verstappen was not voted for best driver. Other than that - same old. Ferrari, Haas and Williams are probably the worst cars built in F1 in recent times.

The rules of F1 states that if someone is on your inside, even just a tiny bit, you have to give them space. It does not mention that it's ok if you don't see them.

Im not sure who is to blame more, however Max should expect absolutely no one to give him space anymore, if he is not willing to give any either. Austria may have been well within the rules, but incidents like that build a reputation very quickly.

However if you're on the inside and ahead (Or, vice versa, if your opponent is on the outside but not ahead), you have all rights to the racing line and can in theory push the other car off. Max uses/abuses this to the...max. I feel a lot of people see him taking his racing line and blame him for pushing people off track, when in reality he's completely within his rights to do so. He did have some fuckups at the start of the previous season for sure, but incidents like him vs Leclerc at Austria that I feel a lot of people are blaming him for was completely within the rulebook. And equally importantly, if that rule wasn't there, there wouldn't be a single mid corner overtake in F1 ever. FIA has proclaimed that for the best racing to take place, the inside line is the golden road. Defend it with everything you have, or you're going to lose that position once your opponent gets his nose within it.

edit: Should add that this only holds true for mid corner. For straights you have to give space on the outside and inside, no matter how for alongside anyone is.

Albon started at the very back and got fifth in his first race. Gasly only got one 5th and one 4th result this year, and both of those times he started at 8th and 5th respectively. Pretty sure he's already faster than Gasly, or at the very least more aggressive with his overtakes, so he can get through the field much quicker.

Also happy for Leclerc btw. I really wish for a long-lasting rivalry between him and Max.

He started at the back of the grid and fought hard to get there. He did not gain many (if any) places in pits and made at least 2 good overtakes the like of which gasly has made zero so far.

Has shown in several races, if Gasly was caught in the middle of the pack he would, more often than not, stay there.

It was not brilliant by Albon but compared to Gasly it was most definitely an upgrade.

I feel like Albon got the highest result possible this race starting from where he did. Verstappen(DNF aside) would've needed to be close to 1.5 seconds a lap faster than Albon to make up the time to Vettel, which I don't think was really possible. Even if he clears the midfield by lap 30, he'd be maybe 30 seconds behind with 15 laps to go which is just too much to make up.

It was Max's fault for me mainly because he had another shit slow start which put him so far out of position he was being overtaken everywhere. Then he threw his car into turn one with no room at all mounting the curb so aggressively and ultimately taking out Kimi. Thus for me this is Max's fault! No need to try make all those places back on turn 1 after a shit start (again) when your car is way faster than Kimi's for example.

I see where you're at and I don't entirely disagree. It was aggressive for sure, and I don't doubt that the move was done based off of a good portion of frustration from yet another bad start. I won't disagree that it was a dumb move from Max's perspective.

From a straight up rulebook perspective, however, Kimi was required to give racing space as soon as Max was an inch on his inside. The rulebook doesn't have a stipulation that it's only as long as you see the other driver. From that perspective, Kimi was 100% at fault for letting Max on the inside, and then turning in on him (because he didn't know he was there).

Combine those two, and I don't think we can say it was another other than a racing incident. I'm completely fine with that, as I'm a fan of both Kimi and Max.

I actually looked this up and apparently there are no official rules for giving space in a corner, only established guidelines:

A. Attacker more than half-way alongside -> attacker has the right to the apex
B. Attacker less than half-way alongside -> defender has the right to the apex
C. Attacker approximately half-way alongside -> both have the right to the apex

So you would be wrong about the part that says Kimi had to give space as soon as Max was only an inch inside, but entirely correct about this being a racing incident, because as far as I remember they pretty much exactly half-way alongside.
This also mixes much more with the recollection I have of people getting penalized for spinning the defender because they clipped the backwheel with their front wing. Because technically that would have been "an inch on the inside"

Looks like it might be a dry qualifying with a wet race which I imagined would mean Ferrari start 1-2 but Mercedes and Red Bull would be quicker behind them.

Well that was a train wreck. I wanted to see how Albon would do but I guess not. They gotta do something about this. They were talking about enforcing minimum lap times. That should definitely happen.
