I don't know how much Osweiler is guaranteed, but an AAV of $18M is crazy talk on the face of it and they won the SB with a non-functioning Peyton Manning at the helm. It's probably a good thing for them that they chose not to overpay an unproven guy. The Broncos lost a lot more than their top 2 qb's. Trevathon and Jackson just signed elsewhere and Brandon Marshall is still a FA. They also essentially don't have a TE or RB right now; cutting Daniels and with Davis, Anderson, and Hillman FA's. This is also day one, so it may get worse if they overpay kaep or RG3 because they get desperate for a QB. They can't afford to overpay a qb and pay a defensive end that much.

There is no FA QB on the market at the moment who is for sure measurably better than your Ryan Mallets of the world, aside from maybe Fitzpatrick, who is for some reason not part of the "huge bucks bonanza". People are paying for a retarded combination of proven mediocrity+imagined potential. If you want mediocrity, get hoyer and cassel, if you want potential get a rookie. There is no overlap between the two among the FAs. Its like Matt Flynn on steroids, without the one great game.

The last ones that come to mind are Manning and Brees, both of whom had an injury history. Free agency wins tend to come from teams gambling that damaged goods aren't as damaged as other teams think they are. Day 1 signings of healthy players at market rates tend to be massive overpays. The other type of wins tend to come from teams that sit out the start of free agency and get the bargains later on.

I think that Osweiler going to Houston is probably a blessing in disguise for them, but losing Trevathon and Jackson, albeit for money they likely aren't worth, is still going to hurt in the aggregate. Considering the cap increases, they probably should sign Marshall and give Miller a long term deal and call it a day on defense. The bargains are going to be had after the initial rush is over. Teams might get desperate, but so will unsigned players. At least teams have the draft to look forward to, the players don't have anything. As the draft gets closer, teams get an upper hand over the unsigned players. This a million times over. Even splash guys like Suh will torpedo your financial flexibility for years to come. The best you can do with an initial rush FA is break even on him, usually it goes much further south in a hurry. I heard it once described as an "excitement tax", which it absolutely is.

Obviously a lot of teams make awful signings, but there's been plenty of clubs that had success with high priced FAs too.
