Could be different in 5 years, was different 5 years ago, but currently the top 3 clubs in Europe are a league above the PL clubs.

Both Real and Barça would absolutely stomp the PL and I think it's very easy to say that in fact. If they played in the PL they would collapse around half-way through the season. Maybe one of them would get a top 4 finish. edit: Actually Real would get a CL place, Barca would have a lot of trouble. edit2: Spanish clubs can't play in the rain.

I do think there's an element of truth to the "bottom PL teams are so good that the season as a whole becomes more exhausting and there's less of a chance to really summon extra strength and energy for the biggest games" idea, but it doesn't work as a complete explanation - the difference in ability showcased has been too large for that. Fact is, Real, Bayern and Barca are more stacked on talent than Chelsea or any other PL team is, and all three teams also have a more cohesive identity with more essential players who have been at the club for longer periods of time. Chelsea is building an identity, and at their best, they've had it, but this season as a whole, they just haven't been at the same level as the top three.

Hope they get better soon though but the whole footballing culture in the PL is sick. They need to focus a whole lot more on their academies/overall club philosophy (attacking play or not and standard formations throughout the club) instead of just buying 10 players and somehow hope 2 of them work out. Would help the national team as well. Right now English youngsters have almost zero chance. It's so bad nowadays that I think even clubs like Valencia and Sevilla would have a decent to good shot at getting second-fourth in the PL (Chelsea only team that's really stronger than them). We can never know for sure of course but I think it's a fair assessment in current football. PL teams might have stronger players in some teams but their strategy and stuff is all dreadful because of the new can of players/managers every year and no clear way of playing so players can never get into a nice comfort zone. Little example: when a team that plays as bad as Manchester United is two points behind second place in the league you know something is wrong.

Chelsea was destroying teams 5-0 and stuff earlier in the season but now that they're kind of out of form they're having trouble against the Burnley's of the world. There are plenty of quality sides in La Liga.. maybe the bottom 5 in the PL are a little bit stronger than La Liga but I think the top 8 of La Liga are a whole lot stronger than the top 8 of PL currently. Barça and Real just make it look easy against the lower tier teams in La Liga but it would be the same in England, arguably bigger beatdowns actually because La Liga teams are better accustomed to playing against the Spanish giants. Little example: when a team that plays as bad as Manchester United is two points behind second place in the league you know something is wrong. Burnley is a richer club than Ajax. There are 15 English clubs in the top 30 richest clubs in the world, you can't just say a club like Valencia who are outside top 40 could get second place. There are maybe 3-4 clubs from Spain that could be somewhat competitive in the PL, but they would need to go though a painful transition period to even get close to the European spots. English clubs get a lot of money just for being one place above where they are before a match, they scratch and kick to get from 13 to 12. And it brings a whole lot more money than winning some Eurocup match, while in Spain...

Hate all you want guys, we will still finish the season with two trophies. Write all the blogs you want. So the rebutall if I gather correctly iss... 1) PL teams are rich therefore they are better ? And hence the league is harder. Oh and the loling cup also. 2) Chelsea is a great team because they are the top of said league (which is kinda the same as point number one just wt more jargon) 3) John Brewin a reasonable well respected football writer is dismissively reduced to a Mickey Mouse level click baiter (on the basis of the above 2 points I am guessing ? So basically the above 3 arguments address none of the points raised and are simply dismissed. well just because. You know the obvious signs of tiring and injuries due to lack of squad rotation and all that stuff is click bait. I see. Chelsea sure is a fortunate club to have such profound thoughtful support. Definitely puts things into perspective. edit: Oh oh and wait the facile and ever available argument that "the only way to know is to make these other top clubs from other leagues play in our league." Nevermind the fact that these other top clubs from weak leagues take the piss out of the top clubs from England reasonably often these last few years (with the odd exception ofcourse). The never ending counter to which is "well our league is so hard we soften each other up for those European shit kickers who dont play hard games and just pussyfoot around warming up to English behemoths that are just to jaded to be. competitive." Its like those annoying songs that keep playing on the radio over and over again. Like listening Pitbull or something. Look anyone can argue and be dismissive using a one size fits all logic to suggest there really isnt a problem. But a meaningful discussion actually addresses the finer points. Just some advice. For example this. "There are maybe 3-4 clubs from Spain that could be somewhat competitive in the PL, but they would need to go though a painful transition period to even get close to the European spots. English clubs get a lot of money just for being one place above where they are before a match, they scratch and kick to get from 13 to 12. And it brings a whole lot more money than winning some Eurocup match, while in Spain..." Its really just a lengthy rehashing of the same "money" argument. You simply suggest that only 3-4 teams can compete in England because ... well money. Every argument that's ever made to counter any criticism of English teams is basically a summary of the above. Just the presentation varies along with anecdotal evidence that is more exception than the rule. Oh well.

Weirdly enough it does so from all that money going into it, after they successfully marketed it to asia in the 90's. No english talents are allowed to develop because why would a mid table team give time to a youngster, when they can splash some cash to a more mature foreign footballer? Just look at chelsea and their host of loaned players. Also, their players are really illiterate in various football aspects, culturally, tactically etc. Imagine if the wages for homegrown talents weren't so blown out of proportion, then we would see many english players being tested in other leagues, mby a promising defender could play in italy and develop his skill set there. Or mby a buzzing midfielder could find a place in villareal, battling it out with the greats of la liga week in week out, transforming into a much better player after a couple seasons. I can safely predict that as long as epl don't put their income in better use, the quality of the league and even more so of their national team, will keep dropping. Sure, every now and then due to all the money being spent a team will do something in europe, but as a whole the structure needs to be rebuilt bottom up. *and look at what randomly cropped up on reddit just now + Show Spoiler + ![]()
