Circle-jerking about how one playstyle was better than the other is what I have always complained about. But there are some styles that are better than others. Generally teams that are better at keeping the ball play better football and are more agreeable to watch. We dont watch football to watch teams sit with 10 behind the ball and kill impetus do we? We appreciate this game when people display high a level of skill be it as individuals or as teams as protagnosists. Sure defensive masterclasses are fun, but they arent why we fell in love with the game. Only when there is a supporter bias is that acceptable to someone who genuinely loves the game, and even then people atleast are apologetic in their defense, not outwardly brash and with false pretense. Or are you saying that Chelsea now isnt more fun to watch than Chelsea before with that shitstyle+ Show Spoiler + lets be honest as effective and pragmatic it is, its pretty shit to watch for the neutral

Yeah except you cant really show me anyone who does that so you are pretty safe there. But not much you can expect from someone who supports teams that have made their bread and butter from throwing long balls and crosses and winning because teams just shat themselves and generally lacked quality. + Show Spoiler + two can play this game. Dont do it.

Two can play this game, so you shouldn't have started it by showing off how little you know about the complexity required to defend and counter-attack properly vs. good passing teams. I find a lot of pleasure in watching a defensive side set-up properly and defend properly and counter-attack properly. Maybe it's because I'm naturally a goalkeeper/defensive player instead of an offensive player, and so I naturally find more joy in that side of the game. What I do know is that defending properly against a superior attacking side takes a lot more skill than most people give credit for, and that it demands far more respect than most people are willing to give. In any case, pretending that no one fell in love with the game because of the defensive side of the game is erroneous. ![]() "We dont watch football to watch teams sit with 10 behind the ball and kill impetus do we? So dont start the buck with me. That makes you look stupid. But then again time and time again you have displayed an ability to ignore good advice so I might aswell be talking to a cow. You are accusing me of saying that defending and counter attacking are easy. That is false. Please quote where I have even made that assertion. But it doesrequire less ability on the ball, thats why teams choose to do it when they are weaker or have less incentive to win. It is not an entertaining skill, atleast not to the neutral. People watch this game to watch teams score and win. Thats the purpose of the game. You might enjoy it maybe because you have never learnt to enjoy the game when played to score and win or maybe you are just jealous of teams that now and in the past have been good at it, or maybe you are an asshole who just wants to play devils advocate. I dont know, but none of these reasons are viable to me, I get it, but I dont agree with that motivation Neverthless fair credit. Thats what you like. Playing not to lose is certainly an effective and well established way to play. I am well versed in the intricacies but I am also aware of why this game is loved and enjoyed. To argue that it is why the world loves the game is illogical. Im sorry but thats the reality. And you choose to ignore my actual question. Is Chelsea today a better team to watch and a better team overall than the one that won the Champions league. Yes or no ? Obviously you will not answer that question because the answer doesnt suit your narrative.

Nobody has a problem with teams that try to defend with 10 players, counter attack, but that keep conceding goals because they suck. Nobody has a problem with teams that try to maintain possession of the ball, but that keep losing it and keep conceding goals because they suck. The problem for the neutral observer is not related to style of play, it's related to whether or not the game is exciting. For me, the two teams I have enjoyed watching the most were a: Norway during the 90s, b: Rosenborg during the 90s. These two teams could hardly have had more conflicting styles of play. Rosenborg played with an offensive naivete which frequently had them lose games by 4+ goals, especially on away field against top european competition. They also sometimes won on home field against the same teams. Norway on the other hand, enjoying what by Norwegian standards was unparalleled success, was more defensively minded than Rehagel's Greece. Now, in both of these cases I was not a neutral observer, so it's not fully transferable, but my disdain for watching the best Barcelona generation relates to the same mechanisms; style of play is actually fairly irrelevant for most people, what people want is a: their preferred team to win, or b: excitement. Excitement largely comes from goals, so yes, teams that "park the bus" will generally be less appreciated - but a team like barcelona which robs the other team from the possibility of even creating chances and which to me was more impressive defensively than offensively (2010-2011 season they conceded 12 goals less than Real Madrid and scored 7 less) was to me, dreadfully boring whenever they had the lead. Mostly just because they were so damn good - but that's also how I felt about any version of Italy going up 1-0.
