Frolik is a nice middle six player but jeez on that contract. The Kessel trade does not seem good to me at all. A throw away roster player, two ok but certainly not great prospects, and a late round first and third? Blehhhh. And they retain $1.25m of Kessel's contract and also gave up a 2nd!. At least they dumped Biggs and Erixon! How on earth did they not get Maata or Pouliot back in that trade. also Montreal somehow got Van to give up kassian and a pick for Prust lol. Also Sather is stepping down and being replaced by Gorton, the AGM

I guess it looks pretty good next to what Toronto got for Kessel, though.

Their whole plan is to rebuild and by the time their good (in theroy) kessel will be past his prime and have 4 years left! I would be pumped if I was Toronto fan. The kessel era failed smart to burn it down and start over It's hardly more than a bag of pucks for the 8th highest scorer of the last 5 years. And he's 27, and the Leafs were under no pressure to move him now. It's not like the player requested out, which fucks their bargaining position. The Leafs had all the leverage. That's fine to want to trade him considering where they are. The return was ass though. Look at the return for Nash and Carter trades: Nash: Dubinsky - 25 at the time; top 6 player, good in all 3 zones, one year removed from leading his team in scoring) Anisimov - 23, fringe top 6 player, good in all 3 zones, steady 40ish point player) Erixon - At the time a pretty good offensive dman prospect A late first pick Carter to CBJ: Voracek - 23, former 8th overall pick, good top 6 two way player who was a 50 pt player in two of his first three seasons. He was unquestionably a good roster player with lots of room to grow. A 1st from a crappy team (which unsurprisingly turned into the 8th overall) a 3rd rounder Shit even Carter to LA with him sulking aroudn and fucking his value got more. Jack Johnson, a still fairly young offensive defensmen who put up 40 points a mid late 1st compare that with the Kessel trade: Leafs ship the 8th highest scorer over the last 5 years, a guy who is far more elite scorer than those two ever were, and the leafs held all the leverage Eat $1.25 of his salary annually Throw in a 2nd Throw in a couple of generally useless players they returned a prospect who might be good but is certainly not a blue chipper, and has many questions about his ability since being drafted a mediocre d prospect who most think is a 3rd pairing guy in the nhl a mediocre third liner a late first (probably something like 22nd or higher) and it's conditional a conditional third None of those pieces are particularly good on their own, and the sum of all the parts isn't that good either. I mean I guess it would be an ok return if Kessel said demanded a trade and said he wont report, but he didn't. They could have just said no and waited it out.

I'm glad I can cheer for Kessel now without accidentally cheering for the Leafs.

Kessel is a locker room cancer / a coach's worst nightmare. I think you have to take that into account when valuing a player. there was also the fact that everybody around the league knew they were (desesperately) trying to get rid of him. I mean the best coach in the world okayed this trade.

that's a trade you make when a player's in the final year of his contract and you just want something back. accepting back an older, slower third line player who isn't as good, an undrafted goalie and a late 3rd just to 'shake things up' is stupid. STL has a good club, they usually finish near the top for GF and GA, and he was a major part of that reason even if he wasnt a ppg player. their issue is they play in the west and under hitchcock theyve ran into the kings twice, and the hawks once, and those are two of the best teams of this decade. they also ran into a white hot goalie on a pretty good minny club this year. if there's any issue with their roster its that they do not have a genuine 1st line talent outside of Tarasenko (who is a goddamn monster) and they rely too much on mediocre goalies. They're not short on grindy players like Brower also yeah I agree, Oshie is going to be good on the Caps. He's a player that looks like he will find much more success playing in a more open system alongside better offesnive players.
