ROR feels like it is overpayment but maybe that's just me being salty since it means Stepan is going to definitely be over $6m now. Though I think part of the reason I feel that way is that Stepan is the Rangers unquestioned 1C. ROR was more of a 2C for Colorado also the leafs gave Kadri $4.1 for one more year. I don't know that he'll ever be a true NHL 1c but he's pretty clearly a good 2C. The 1 year gives them flexibility to walk if they don't think he fits with the new vision. But he should given that he had some of the best underlying stats of leafs players. Leafs better hope he doesn't have a massive bounce back year and their move coems back to bite them. arbitrartion list: http://www.nhlpa.com/news/23-players-elect-salary-arbitration

And that contract will be hard as fuck to move. They also have Girgensons too. Which I think as noted makes it more likely he gets shifted over to wing when the time comes but that's a lot of money to throw at a non-center player who isn't flirting with a ppg each season. Though I missed that tidbit about the contract. That's bait for a floor team for sure.

Fans may not like him, but there's no other player who puts up so many points and gets paid so little. There is a good reason fans don't like him and why even though he gets points he gets paid so little. Off ice baggage, attitude problems, lack of effort etc. He is the epitome of what you don't want in a hockey player on your team. I could barely watch Montreal when he played for us. He is what happens if you take the worst of Phil Kessel and mix it with a dash of Brad Marchand and throw in a Portuguese soccer player. That is Mike Ribeiro.

but as far as unsigned players, I am amazed that someone didn't sign Semin yet on a 1 year deal. That seems like the perfect candidate for a low risk, buy low reclamation project.

Honestly this deal will be a steal by the time it is halfway over. Even though he's RFA it is still smart. The alternative is basically a bridge for 2 years or so and then just getting hammered like how the Habs did with PK. 3-4 years from the now the open market value for a guy like that is going to easily be $9m. And they don't get fucked around on an offer sheet
