Any idea on how to stop over eating? Most of my portions are quite good sizes but my flatmates have been making really nice dinner for the last few days and I can't help not eating more and more and then I fill up on a bunch of water afterwards and my stomach starts to hurt because it's so full. Sounds kinda ridiculous I know.

Oh yea, it's all healthy stuff btw (rice/pasta, veges, meat)

Doesn't really matter if it's healthy, if you eat until your stomach hurts you'll get/remain fat anyway. I don't know what you should do if you lack the willpower to not overeat in the first place, maybe drink all that water before you eat?

I find logging my food every meal helps a lot (using something like MyPlate or Fitday). It's easy to keep stuffing yourself if you don't see how much you're going over the limit. In the end though, you'll have to choose to stop overeating though.

I would argue pasta is not healthy. Rice is OK.

If you're looking to lose weight cut everything but fruits, vegetables, meats, birds, fish, eggs. Occasionally nuts and seeds.

Eat 'til you're SATISFIED on these foods. Not full.

No rice. Especially no pasta.

My only deviation from the diet described (which is close to the Paleo diet I guess) over the last week has been

a) A bit of fat free yogurt with a teaspoon of honey and
b) Diet drinks, since I can't find any proper evidence that they are harmful or have "hidden calories" or anything that amounts to such.

Been pretty good otherwise. I cut out ALL bread and rice (and I live in a HUGE carb culture) and I haven't low energy at all, which I have been conditioned to expect by cutting those things. I like apples and pears, and have skipped the bananas. I don't really eat any significant amount of chocolates, potato chips, caloric sodas or the like at all. I may occasionally have a few (literally like 5-7) chips while someone is handing the bag around.

Have recently been feeling good and satiated without feeling too "bloated" except possibly when I have the yogurt, though i calculate it comes to around 80 calories. Been doing starting strength alongside which feels great.

So...is this a good trajectory? Or am I still missing something?

Looks pretty good to me. Yogurt with the fat is probably better than yogurt without the fat, but if it's bloating you I'd just chuck it altogether

There's been some stuff about diet soda effect on gut flora and gut flora plays an obvious role in health but I haven't done any recent searches on that. I would go with seltzer water if you wanted something bubbly and avoid diet drinks.

Not trying to lose weight I'm quite under average weight atm but I just eat so much I don't want to get fat lol. I used to be quite fat and I still love stuffing myself when I get good food lol. Guess water is the way to go.

Edit: also eating stuff other than rice/bread/pasta can get expensive and it's really easy too

Hi all

This is such an awesome thread that a lurker like me wants to contribute in some small way.

What about Vitamin supplements? From my understanding (Google and general conversations) Vitamins play a important role in boosting weight loss and should be included in this thread according to me.

Without sounding like an senile old man I do believe our food in this modern day and age does not contain enough Vitamins and Minerals even if its the healthier variants. Keep in mind this pessimism comes from a South African and we have an abundance of meat, fruit and vegetables (Important exports) so we should have a good chance of having some of the best raw produce.

One the flip side I also believe that pharmaceutical companies are evil and will try to sell you 20 different supplements. All the so called studies and advice cannot be trusted when greed enters.

So the idea I had was to get a general good and recommended multi-vitamin with maybe another supplement that caters for weight loss. A webpage (http://www.marilynglenville.com/dieting.htm) suggests just this and also says the additional supplement or small increases in: B vitamins, Chromium, Zinc, Co-enzyme Q10 and Garcinia cambogia can help allot. Doctors in SA loooove advocating green tea extract.

Any advice? (Thx )
Its always hug a zergling day!

Im not a professional or anything, but I am surprised that you say youve heard vitamins are worth it. every time i hear about vitamin supplements, people are saying they are essentially useless unless you have some kind of illness/disorder.

you're not really obligated to drink alcohol. You can go out and have fun even you drink water. But really I dont think you should mind eating unhealthy food every once in a while. It's not the occasional party that will ruin your diet, just don't go too overboard with it.

The thing is just because we as critical thinkers see that mass media tries to shove Vitamins down our throats does not mean that we should avoid it. I am trying to sift the lies to find the truth that will become part of my sustainable diet. I have a personal friend that says he started using a multi-vitamin supplement and saw noticeable improvements in his energy levels. He had basically the same exercise routine and his goal is to have a slight weight gain, so most factors that could explain his improvement is cancelled out. But this hardly counts as conclusive.

Another thing to consider is that established science is that we should have a rounded diet that includes the different food groups that would basically prevent the need for supplements. This takes time and massive effort (and cost). How many times do we really eat a completely balanced set of meals in a day. I am already 100% sure that we do not get enough Calcium and Vitamin C. Our bodies are optimized for survival and it compensates for lacking nutrients in the most amazing ways.

Thus the very reason why I brought this up in the first place is that I do believe there is a role to play by Vitamin and/or mineral supplements in general health and weight-loss especially. I want to pick the brains of the best online community.

If you're eating well the only thing you may need to be supplementing is:

Fish oil, and vitamin D.

And you don't need to supplement vitamin D if you're out in the sun a lot.

Potentially calcium, magnesium, and zinc as well. Vitamin K (K2 in particular) is actually an important one that people may be lacking (especially in terms of development of atherosclerosis).

The B vitamins you will get enough if you're eating well rounded with meat/fowl/fish/eggs at every meal. Vitamin C you easily get enough by eating your fruits. Vegetables, especially cruciferous, you'll get enough calcium and most everything else.

Vitamin C is not really effective for much at all anyway except preventing scurvy and you need to not get any for a long time to have issues.

Indepedently though a bunch of research that's what I've come to conclude.

Conclusion,
Vitamin D, fish oil. If anything else needs to be added depending on diet then maybe.

Bloody Hell! Ding Ding we have a winner. Exactly what I wanted. Maybe include this link additionally under the supplement section in OP. It is so easy to visually follow also. My mom will love this. The best is that all the bubbles link to peer-reviewed research, the only type you can trust (mostly).

Thank you again.

P.S. Dark Chocolate for blood pressure -> O HELL YES! (In moderation I swear)
Also I wondered if I missed the supplement section when I read OP at first. Anyway if you repeated information I apologize, but I got this link from you so I am happy!

Eshlow, do you have an opinion on Diet Drinks? I can't find any studies proving them being harmful. Some indicate they may increase the proverbial "sweet tooth" propensity, but as long as you're careful about what you eat I doubt it would make much difference.

All i know is when i switched to diet drink years ago i dropped a LOT of weight and kept most of it off

Obviously, eliminating the kcals from regular soda is great.

Diet, I think, is questionable. We don't really know long term effects on our health yet. So I would tend to avoid them until we do.

Like I said if you need hte bubbly go with seltzer and then slowly wean yourself off. (IMO)

I'll add that too.

aw im a noob...sorry Esh, i missed your first reply, thanks for both!

Im keeping yogurt low and now that i can lift an average of 15 lbs more than i could just a couple sessions ago (holy **** HOW DOES SS WORK? lol ) I'm feeling real hungry for proteins anyway, and the small amounts of yogurt don't seem to be bloating me as much.

as for the diet yeah its more the caffeine and taste i crave...I should probably start weaning soon but it just seems that its regarded with suspicion...and i'm not sure what the suspicion is based on? I mean yeah there were alarmist studies but they never came to anything and IIRC there were similarly alarmist studies on all sort of things, like how cell phones caused cell-phone shaped tumors (seriously).

Either way, winter is coming as the starks say, so may be a good time to switch to black coffee anyway.
