squat: failure 75kg 5x5 was so hard...dunno BUT ohp 47kg 5x5 done deadlift, could do 130kg again and 2 times. then because i had time: bench press 85kg-new record, yay , i might try to go to bodyweight-about 92-94kg before next year and some snatches, 40kg like few times in a row few sets, then 45kg few times and tried 50kg too, which wasnt clean, a bit of "afterpush" so it wouldnt count
havent posted here for a long time, need to drag out my 100 chardio thread, noone wants me to be humiliated i guess, because i have under 30 ways. I wont post videos before 100! :D
Man, I wish my gym had these standard barbells and weights that I see in most people's videos. They only have 10kg barbells and kinda small weights, so when I deadlift I have to lay the barbell on top of another weight in order to increase the height of the bar. They also don't have a proper Squat rack, which means I'll have to look for another gym soon as I increase the weight of the Squat.
It's seriously disappointing that basically no one in my gym squats or deadlifts (can deadlift be used as a verb?). Only girls squat, and they mostly do squats with a narrow stance - their femur never go parallel. I've never seen anyone apart from myself doing deadlifts. Discouraging. Also got wrong information when I asked one of the instructors if my deadlift form was good, which made me realize I shouldn't ask them anymore hehe.
The owner of the gym also turns on really bad music which completely turns me off. It's like if you were trying to train and had Adele - Someone like you in the back ground. I can't even bring my own player with earplugs because the music is so loud that I'd ruin my ears with louder volume.
As type this I realize that I should get the fuck out of there ASAP!!!!!!

Do it man. My current gym has awful PT's and music, but equipment wise it's awesome. Don't procrastinate on finding a PROPER gym with at least one powerrack. My current gym only has one, but barely anybody squats so I've had to share it maybe twice in three months.
Also, ask if they allow chalk. Chalk, uniform barbells and allow for Pclean/deadlift.

1) I did a sprint-workout yesterday on a track closeby which I just discovered. It is no tartan track, more like a dirt track in a forest but without the stones. That was my first real sprinting since 2005 and I did 5x100m approxiamtely. a) It was so much fun, I am gonna by new shoes for this today, normal running shoes have horrible stability. b) I cannot stand-up or sit down anymore without supporting my weight somehow. My quads and part of my harmstrings are so sore, like no amount of squatting could ever do. I can hardly move + Show Spoiler +
it is awesome
2) I was on vacation for 1 1/2weeks and apparently gained 1.4kg during that time. That made me pretty mad (and confused, since I normally don't gain weight during vacation, you are on your feet all the time and don't have time to eat constantly). So after one week of very disciplined eating I consulted my scale again and I am down 3.3kg from last week. Talking about a rebound effect there. Of course I must have been pretty bloated last week, you don't just lost more than 3kg in one week, but there was some truth to it, since that week my blood sugar spiked to 127 in the morning for the first times since several months (damn you coke). Anyway, blood sugar and weight are down again, so everything is good in the world. 135,3kg now, let's see if I can crack 130kg before christmas.
As promised, I am back to post an update on how things are going with me getting a coach/new gym access. Gonna spoiler it again to save space but I promise it's not anywhere near as long as the last post + Show Spoiler +
Before I begin, I just wanna say, holy hell today was an interesting day. The wind yesterday knocked down a bunch of trees, broke a bunch of glass and even tore a roof off someone's house in my city so that managed to affect me getting to school. Ultimately, it took me 3 hours to get to school whereas it normally takes 50 minutes. This left me with roughly 5 minutes to meet the coach. I was so disappointed but luckily he was understanding about it and offered me another chance to sit down with him and have a chat another day. During the short time we talked, he told me pricing would be 700 dollars to get yearly access into the gym and 50 dollars a month to him for coaching and programming. As for programming, he said the beginning would be me learning the basics and that it'd be a while before I did the full lifts which I understand. This was as far as we got before he had to go =[. More and more I'm thinking that this chance is a good one for me. Even if it's a bit pricey, I don't think 1300 for a year of learning is something to complain about. Looks like it's time to find a weekend job. I'll try to set up another appointment with the coach this Friday and hopefully there will be no roofs flying around on Thursday causing mass destruction.
Thanks for the support Zafrumi and decaf, I really appreciate it. I'm sure sometime down the road I'll have a bunch of questions I'm dying to get answered =]
@DimSum: Uh as for the "team" I don't think I'll be part of one as far as I know but that could change depending on how they manage to get me into the gym. I didn't want to state names or where I'm going before because nothing was for certain yet and I didn't want to set everyone up for a disappointment, but I'm a student at the University of Calgary and when I say "gym" I mean the one in the basement of the Olympic Oval that we have attached to our school. That one's generally only opened to varsity athletes and Olympic athletes either from Calgary or anywhere else so, the only way for me to get in, is for my name to appear on a list of athletes somehow. I wish I knew more about it but again, only had a whopping 5 minutes with the coach T_T
There are a couple nice 4x8 deadlift/olympic platforms up on Craigslist near me for $400 for the two of them. I keep putting off getting stall mats for my gym, but was thinking maybe get these and surround the rest with mats. I think these things usually run nearly a grand each new (rubber sides, laminated hardwood center), so if they don't work out I could probably get back what I paid. Should I go for them or just do all stall mats? Building one myself would cost over $100 in materials, wouldn't be nearly as nice, and would have almost no resale value.
I have one cage and a half cage, so I could use one or both of them. On the same topic, is it better to squat on a hard surface like wood or something with some give like rubber?
EDIT: I guess this might not have been the best thread for this, but as long as I brought it up, does anyone know anywhere to get quality, used gym equipment in the midwest?
First of all, the most serious. @Eshlow. First of all, congrats on the book (late to that party). If I ever happen to have a random $50, maybe I'll pick it up just to support you.
But Alas, I need some help guys. I'm not too sure what is wrong. Today I woke up and sometime during the day, I was going about my normal activities and then my vision began to "swim" and I could not focus my vision at all. If I tried to direct them to a spot, they would just roll. This was accompanied by a light headed feeling, like I was dizzy or something. This happened again when I came home and was standing up eating, and just happened again after I woke up from my nap and as I was laying in bed. The last time it happened, there was also a sound coming from my ear that may have started out as just a constant pitch, but then began to sound like pressure or air was being released from my ear.
Help me TLHF! I actually got freaked out enough to try to google the symptoms and post here. I think the only thing I ever found was vertigo?
The first one, on HIIT compared to regular cardio:
HIIT boosts endurance similar to steady state cardio, at only 10% (!) of similar training volume, new study shows http://1.usa.gov/vP0kk0
In untrained individuals, but still a pretty strong case for HIIT in my opinion.
The second is about having less wear and tear on your shoulders. While I don't have to worry about my bench going way below parallel, he advocates to stop when the arms are parallel to the ground. I'm not sure how I feel about that (not enough information on my part to make an educated guess), I do like his prehab/rehab work so I included it :D Shoulder Savin', yo
So I did day 1 of SL5x5.... and it went ok I guess but I am probably not doing anything right.
Squats (no weights): So after my first set some guy was like "keep your neck and head up." I thought you were supposed to keep it facing slightly facing towards the ground but I guess my chest was way too forward and I needed to keep my back straight. It also became apparent that my right side is much stronger than my left side as I started leaning right towards the end of my sets. It wasn't too hard and I look forward to doing more of these in the future.
So next is the bench but these 3 guys are occupying the only flat bench in the gym so I go on the treadmill and walk for 10 minutes... then jog for 10 minutes.... and they are still there so I'm like fuck it and move to try out rows for the first time ever.
Rows (65 pounds): I've never done these before in my life and it turns out that I am not very flexible in my hamstrings so the entire process felt really awkward. At times I think I was bending back too much or standing too close to the weights. The only thing I knew to do was to go all the way down to the ground (or the two 25 plates I set up) and bring it to the chest. Really not used to these so it was kind of weird.
Finally the bench clears up so I'm pumped for my 5x5 45 pound bench presses. Awww yeah. I've actually benched before so I do my 25 reps in like 5 minutes and then leave the gym kind of sheepishly cause I just benched no weight 25 times and then left.
Looking forward to getting better and adding weight. I'm considering hiring a trainer to teach me the proper form on all of these moves. Thoughts?

Hard, for the same reason that you want to have thin or rigid shoes (or none), so the force isn't lost into surface.

Keep with Stronglifts, but read Starting Strength for correct form.
Personally, I would skip the trainer. He/she probably won't know the correct form for barbell lifts (unless you go to a good gym), and will have you jumping through hoops before you can actually start any exercise. If you need help with form, just takes some videos and post them here.

Sounds a lot like exhaustion to me. Try eating a bunch of good food, getting a bunch of water and rest. This happens to me more often than I'd like and I always ate like shit the day before and exerted myself much harder than normal on these days. I could easily be wrong but if it's what I'm used to and you know you ate like shit the day before then you're fine.
Looking forward to getting better and adding weight. I'm considering hiring a trainer to teach me the proper form on all of these moves. Thoughts?
According to Mark Rippetoe you should be looking down, some feet ahead of you. You can see it in this video, he even tells the guy too look down.
Also, I don't think hiring a trainer is needed. Basically read the correct form on Starting Strength book (like someone said) and check videos, that should be enough. GL and keep it going
