Quick question, is that link to the 5x5 workout all there is, or is there a book to it as well that is available for purchase?

Quick question, is that link to the 5x5 workout all there is, or is there a book to it as well that is available for purchase? I recommend Starting Strength over a 5x5 program usually, and it does have a book... highly recommended purchase, by the way. Even if you don't end up doing Starting Strength it'll teach you the core lifts--squat, deadlift, bench press, overhead press, and power clean--in detail. The programs are also in the OP. I personally do the pullup/chinup variation of Starting Strength in lieu of doing power cleans, just because I have no coaching and no confidence in power cleaning.

It's pretty easy to miss the overhead press safely, while having low confidence about completing a squat rep can make the trip down pretty scary.Don't be afraid of getting injured with barbell exercises. People are surprised to know that injuries in the weight room are actually quite rare, especially so if you know how to complete the lifts. Also, a lot of the fun is seeing how well you can do the lift, considering most weaknesses come from poor technique and sharpening up your technique increases the amount of weight you can do. I'm six months into SS and my technique has improved dramatically. I'd already be squatting 150kgx5 if I hadn't gotten sick 6 fucking times this winter.l

Assisted pullups are great, try to decrease the assisted weight every workout if you continue with that. You do not need variety in your workouts until you get to the point where your body cannot increase the weight every workout. Even then, I would be it's more your diet and recovery you should change first, but that's up to you of course. There is a book for 5x5 that's very similar to starting strength. I would recommend at least skimming through starting strength since it seems to have the best explanations on how to properly perform the basic lifts. But yeah 5x5 is just 5 sets of 5 of whatever exercise you are on, plus the warm up sets- look up how to calculate those on the starting strength wiki as you should never not do warm ups: http://startingstrength.wikia.com/wiki/FAQ:The_Program#How_do_I_warm_up_properly_for_my_training_sessions.3F Since I'm lazy I use the warm up calculator provided. @rosa: I originally started with the chinups/pullups version for the same reason, but after getting my ristos I decided I'm going for the powercleans- definitely leaving it at 45 for a couple more sessions to iron out technique issues ![]()

But right now I'm going for decaf's deadlift record so I'm focusing on deadlifting every Sunday at +5kg/session.

It sure looks intimidating, lol. the overhead press is actually one of the safer barbell movements because you can't lift a whole lot of weight in the first place. and if you can't put it above your head for whatever reason, you can just let it back down on your shoulders without too much trouble (unlike the bench press). it's also a hell of a lot of fun shoving weights up in the air. i'm sure you'll be saying the same thing once you get the hang of it ![]() @fyre: get that checked out asap dude. that's scary.

bought new shoes with very flat soles (similar to chucks) and did 115kg squat today. I think my legs are dead because apparently I hit some different muscles with my new shoes compared to my old ones... maybe I should have started with less weight to get used to squatting almost bare-foot ^^ managed to do 5x5x4x115kg though (failed last rep because of poor form :/ ) so its all good ![]()

Also for anyone who has any questions that gym rats on TL might not know, try the forums on BodyBuilding.com (Not sure about any trouble for "advertising" just trying to provide useful info, take this post down if need be) have alot of experienced guys who seem to have answers to most of my questions. Anyone here ever been to any boxing gyms? I heard often they spend 75% of their time beating you into condition to make sure your body can go through hell and back. I'm taking BJJ here this summer but was always curious what boxing gyms were like.

I think I may have just been dehydrated, I looked up a bunch of possible other causes/symptoms and nothing really matches up. Thnx for the help anyway

Thnx for the help anyway Do not try to self-diagnose when you do not have the education/training. That is the most dangerous thing anyone could do. Pissing blood indicates kidney damage, you'd best get to a hospital asap. Kidney damage doesn't just come from physical trauma, and dehydration(from lack of water intake) alone does not cause blood in your urine. Your condition could very definitely kill you. Get to a hospital asap.

This is a very serious symptom that requires a physician's attention immediately. Stop fucking around on TL and get your ass to a doctor.
