I wonder if lack of players is more because TL on the whole is way deader than it used to be or because of the toxic atmosphere.
All the old players got jobs and have no time to play and there's no new influx of players because nobody plays starcraft anymore.

I tried watching SC2 again the other day with IEM Katowice going on, but the games themselves were so boring i closed it after ten minutes. This is coming from someone who watched every single game of Code A when Moletrap out of all people was casting.

How many of those are new players? How much of a competitive scene is there anymore? How many of those players are interested in the competitive scene? How many of those interested in the competitive scene are interested in teamliquid? I'd wager that they aren't actually many new people.

sc2 and lol are unwatchably boring atm, and have been for a good while no surprise lr threads etc are dying
so ppl just converge on reddit to meme because what is there to do but meme

The early days of SC2 were by far the most enjoyable for me, even though everybody constantly complained about the maps being too small and rushes being too strong. Long games in SC2 just don't have the same engagement as long games in BW, but rushes and cheese were always fun to watch for me. I still think LR threads are a much better way to get the latest results than reddit though.

After F2P games/day went back up to around the level of lotv release and coop is a more popular mode than ranked now. I'm not sure if people come to Team Liquid rather than Reddit or something, but it's definitely not dying out soon. LRs still seem decently alive to me idk.

I agree with you guys it's time to move on from all these shit games and move on to the prime ESPORTS game PUBG.

This is exactly how I felt about SC2.
The most interesting games of SC2 for me were early 1-2 base games. Everybody clambored for large macro maps and that's what they got and the game got boring real fast.

The level of pro sc2 games is way, way bigger than in the past. Probably the best it has ever been. It just has run its course. And I think it is a good example for showing that level of play and viewer interest is not correlated at all (because we had the same discussion with regards to League frequently). Well actually there might even be a negative correlation. Although I still like watching sc2 from time to time.
In League the games on the current patch have become much more "random" with less vision, and I feel that has made them much more fun to watch. This weekend was the best for me in some time. And I am already looking forward to what the Koreans will do on this patch.

For me only discussions with dissenting opinions are interesting. Seems pointless to me to say what everyone else already said, but sadly that is what is popular.

I get the impression that people consume content so fast nowadays that whatever place has the highest cycle is where they go to. Reddit is insanely fast compared to traditional forums.
If we take a look at the anime community you see something super strange happening. People focus so hard on what is currently airing. Essentially instead of caring about the show itself it's more about being part of the conversation around the show. If you a bit too late the conversation moves on and now you missed the reason for being engages. World is just so insanely fast. I struggle to keep up even on the TL anime thread I visit regularly.
edit: Hell we see it in other media too. We have a massive tragedy happen on Tuesday then by Thursday people already forgotten about it.

The shift to Reddit/Discord drives me nuts.
To be clear I have nothing against Reddit or Discord in a vacuum. People can communicate in whatever mode they find most amenable to their tastes. I myself use Reddit and Discord to keep tabs on the latest news regarding some games I play (Stellaris, WoW), and it's hard to imagine better platforms for that sort of immediacy.
The problem is that those platforms are killing information permanency. Whereas in the past you could be fairly certain some forum, a wiki, or GameFAQs would exist as a permanent(ish) record for certain types of information about a game, today that's no longer the case. Most games, even popular ones, now house the bulk of their knowledge in the unreliable zeitgeist of the Reddit and Discord communities.
It works great for games like Stellaris where there's a set of diehard fans assiduously updating the wiki all the time, therefore giving you the best of both worlds. For any game that lacks those dedicated curators it's a nightmare, your only choice is to dive into Reddit/Discord and hope that the answers you find or receive aren't holdovers from an old patch or based purely on the intangible feelings/inadequate memory of whoever is answering.
I don't blame Reddit/Discord directly though, it's in large part an issue of hardware. Most people do not sit down with a computer these days, they're doing everything through phones or tablets. Forums are not designed for that kind of social ecosystem.

TL has really dropped off a cliff in traffic apparently. Almost 40 million views in August 2017, down to <10 million in January 2018. Ouch. https://www.similarweb.com/website/teamliquid.net#overviewI used to click on this site several hundred or thousands of times a day for live reporting threads. Whether Brood War or League. Maybe 4-5 times these days. Seems like a confluence of factors. SC2 slowly dying, League interest is on the wane (and if someone is interested in it, they're far more likely to be on Reddit than here), and Brood War never really made a big come back despite the remaster. I can't even arse myself to watch Scarra, Qtpie, or Voy anymore. no idea how many other people are in this situation, but the bw remaster totally fucked all menuing things and i can't even connect to battle.net through it. i had no issues prior to the remaster beta and months of troubleshooting hasn't been able to fix it.

I absolutely do not get the hype on the battle royale games I hate all of them but they are mega in vogue right now.

They look fun to play but as an actual esport? that I don't get. Although I suppose it's just because people get such high twitch stream views so they already have a bunch of fans. Looks fun as a group but I don't really have friends I game with so I'll prob never give them a change.
Fortnite actually looks pretty cool.
I am terrible ad adapting to other platforms and new stuff so as someone who's solely used TL since 2012 it's pretty depressing just because I don't really have people to talk to anymore

Fortnite's other mode(the one that I think it was 'meant' to be focused on before the battle royale side map just absolutely took off as its own thing) is far more interesting to me, but far less popular. It's like a building+survival mix.

I think watching all these esports cannibalize each other has given me yet more profound respect and admiration for the lasting success of BroodWar.

It's a nice cluster fuck as you have however many squads(I've seen tournies use 16, 20 and 24 squad rounds) on the map vying for position instead of A vs B. That is the primary thing that makes BRs stand out to me as a viewing experience. PUBG is my guilty pleasure esport. Scarcraft is the dtf ex who sometimes bring along her younger, ditzy sister.
