Also, now that I own a home a 20% pay cut would hurt quite a bit.

Because that's just mind blowing to me. I'm not saying that anyone is crazy for spending a lot on a wedding. I understand the desire to do so, but it just seems a little... excessive.

How many people attend is also a big factor. Catering becomes more expensive the more people who attend, and to an extent the same is true for venues. The costs don't necessarily scale linearly either, so 200 people can easily be more than 4 times as expensive as 50. For the record my in-laws spent $25000 on our wedding, but my wife is an only child and their princess so they wanted the whole shebang.

To me, 5k that doesn't all too much for a wedding. Lol Chinese restaurant weddings man. Was it the 7 course dinner that included like a cold meat platter with shrimp chips, some Peking duck, "shark fin" soup, ginger fried lobster etc.? edit: yea my cousin wanted a small/cheap wedding, but his wife/in laws wanted to go all out, and now he feels pressured to pay back in-laws for the same reason Suess mentioned.

Chinese restaurant weddings #1. the sucky part is the desert dish is always fucking bean soup or orange slices. Like w0t m8? the other 9 dishes were super epic, and the last dish is fucking orange slices? It's super anticlimactic.

Only work 3 days a week. :D I mean if you're wanting to make it a 40 hour work week you'd need to sneak in a 4 hour shift somewhere else. I think I prefer five 8 hour work shifts as opposed to three 12 hour shifts and one 4 hour shift. Sure having the longer weekend is super nice, but working a 12 hour shift can really drain you. I mean granted, it really depends on what you're doing, but doing a bunch of math and writing algorithms for 12 hours is very taxing. At least for me.

BUT then you'll have at least one day to go out into the world and do all the shit that's not open on weekends like dentists and government BS. And if you don't have standard errands to do then you have a WHOLE EXTRA WEEKEND DAY. If your "open bar" is only like beer and wine then you can probably get it for much less than $50 a person, but if you actually want to give people real drinks it can easily run to 80-100.

I'm with you. I'd be ok working on Saturdays if I had more time in the evenings to hang out. Easily, depending on how open (what they stock, for example) and how many bartenders or other service people they need to set up and staff it
