Hi all,

I have saved some money in order to take my husband (who is turning 40) to South Korea. He is a big fan of Starcraft 2 (former player) and watch all GSL tournaments on youtube. One of his biggest wishes is to go to South Korea and watch a GSL game live. I know he likes "Maru" and the "blue" team in Starcraft.

I am not at all familiar with GSL but would love to surprise him and make this happen. May someone please let me know how to?

Will there be any live shows of the GSL tournament in South Korea in 2022 or 2023? And what tournament is most fun to watch (I guess the one with the best and most famous players)? Where do I buy tickets for such live show?

I am SO grateful for any and all answers I can get.

Thank you.

As of right now, GSLs are held in-studio but do NOT allow live audiences due to COVID-19 restrictions in South Korea. There may be live audiences in 2022 but that is just speculation at this point. As of now the GSL events are the only in-studio StarCraft 2 events being held in South Korea.

Also Tickets are not required entry is 100% free but be sure to come an hour early to guarantee seating.

Obviously GSL is the tournament to watch. It is also the only one held in a studio at all right now (but maybe if Covid restrictions are lifted things will change. Even then, in SK the big event is GSL. Worldwide IEM Katowice might be the bigger one, but it's very different).

Assuming GSL allows spectators in next year, your next question is whether you want to go to a group stage or finals match. The big advantage of a group stage is that you'll have more players and more games (minimum 10 games, generally more) vs a finals (2 players and max 7 games). But finals are supposedly higher quality (but often not, because of finals curse... Moreover, I'm guessing your husband is a fan of some specific players and also has a preference for one race over the other two (or maybe even match-up specific), so if you have to plan this all in advance before you even know who is playing when, planning for a group stage might be a safer bet.

An obvious alternative would be a GSL super tournament, which is less prestigious than the regular league, but happens in its entirety over a weekend.

Finally, the 2022 GSL schedule is not known yet. In fact, it isn't even confirmed there will be a GSL in 2022.

I attended OSL in 2010 while travelling in KR and it was quite amazing. Definitely a good idea if you can pull this off!

Assuming covid is clear in 2022/23 (a big if) then it should be very possible. Dunno if South Korea is the single best option unless you're already going there, but IEM Katowice or DreamHack options might also be very good!

Lots of info out there when you get closer to getting ready to go!

you need to ask Artosis (english GSL caster) about this, he'll have more info on the restrictions etc., tweet him @ https://twitter.com/Artosis

Thank you for a very useful reply! Where can I find or follow news on when and how there will be a GSL in 2022? Do they then also release a complete schedule for the GSL tournament, with dates for group stages and finals? I know that my partner likes Terran (I think Maru plays with that team?). Do you now if the group stage is played during a specific time/month of the year or if the finals are played during a specific time/month of the year?

Thanks again!! I cannot explain how helpful this is

I think it's a great idea to take a StarCraft fan to Seoul! I haven't been to Korea myself since covid so YMMV, but just saying:

1) Hotel - You want to stay in Gangnam-gu. I would recommend Seolleung Station, where there are business hotels that are more reasonably priced for the area and is a nice walk across the business district to the studio. It's also along a big road if you want to jump in a cab. The area parallels Korean shops with Western shops of roughly equal price and quality. There are literally like 10 coffee shops on each block. This is mostly important that all of them will provide wifi if you need it.

If you're willing to use the metro, you'll find much more reasonable hotel or Airbnb options north of the Han River. This is important if you want to make friends at GSL and go out for a late meal or drinks.

2) Studio - note the different experiences. A regular series is in the studio where you get a headset with the English feed and you can either watch the players or a big screen showing the game. It usually takes about 3 hours, 630-930 PM. It's nice to stay 30 minutes after the games so that you can see the players and casters, who take time to say hi to fans and usually take pictures together. They've always been accommodating in my experience. I've never tried, but I bet you could arrange something if you ask the staff at the event, like during a break. If you don't watch, there is a break after every series or every 2-3 games, and most of the people in the studio will stand up or go to the bathroom.

For a finals, it is a much bigger deal but much shorter, maybe 1.5-2 hours. The fans are much louder and there is a lot more stuff in Korean, which doesn't really apply to the global audience.

Depending if he's interested in Brood War, the regular season is more interesting because there is a separate night for ASL during the week. Regular events are also about 3 hours.

3) Food - there are a bunch of things to try. Fried chicken and beer is a Korean classic. Going to FamilyMart for canned beer and rice balls or microwave dinner is a salaryman tradition. Korea has done some cool stuff with rice noodle and pasta sauces, which sounds weird but it really works. I've never tried it myself, but I think you probably could get a StarCraft pro to join you for dinner by offering to pay, or you can ask them where StarCraft pros like to eat.

There is huge disparity between what happens pre-Covid and while pandemic is ongoing that this is not worth answering. Perhaps wait till things settle down to a new normal before asking again. Thank you.

I have nothing to add but would like to inform you that you made my day by saying his favorite team is "blue" In Sc2 matches, the players are randomly assigned either "red" or "blue" for the matches. Unless you noticed the players wearing a certain blue jersey, which I'd need more knowledgeable Sc2 fans to help with (Team Liquid perhaps?)

Either way, best of luck! And please don't take my comment poorly as that was not my intention.

Nothing constructive here neither. Sorry!

I read Blue and thought Afreeca Freecs. But your comment made me think that the Blue referred to a specific player in one match or a team in a team match.

Unfortunately, the timing couldn't be worse. As long as COVID looms over the day-to-day operations at the AfreecaTV studio, there won't be any certainty regarding live events allowing viewers in. Your husband probably knows the situation and understands that it's an impossible dream for just about every fan atm. Hopefully restrictions start to die down soon. I'm not 100% sure, but I think this is where you buy the tickets:

www.ticketlink.co.kr

As you can see, they haven't had any live events for the past couple of months. The tickets are about $5.00 US. The hard part is getting them before they're gone and arriving in Korea at least two weeks in advance.

You can continually checkout TL or AfreecaTV's official English twitter account for updates regarding the GSL in 2022.

The full schedule is usually not publicly released, since the dates often change.

Your best bet is to plan for something between April and September. You'll have the best chance of seeing the GSL/ASL and maybe another esport if you wish to experience it. A season usually doesn't have a break, unless it happens during Lunar New Year or Korean Thanksgiving. There will be 1 to 2 weeks of nothing between seasons though, so avoid that.

There is no telling where we'll be with covid next year, so be sure to check the requirements when entering Korea and if we are allowing an audience.
