He didn't really lose any engagements. At worst they were slightly more cost efficient for Innovation but Serral's higher economy evens that out. Innovation was also doing pretty much zero economic damage with his pushes. Plus, Serral's ling counterattacks kept catching handfuls of Marauders and Thors out which made the Mutas pretty much uncontested aside from the widow mines that Innovation had spread out all over the map and the banelings were getting soaked by less Marauder sponges at the front. The big muta counterattack just made Serral's slight edge jump to a much wider margin in my opinion. EDIT: Marauder sponges

Ling counter attacks only started catching marauders and thors when Serral actually got to counter attack with mutas, at least if we watched the same game. Make no mistake, Serral was probably slightly favored in game before that counter attack, but it's the kind of edge he had in first game as well.

EDIT: Marauder sponges Thats just the tempo nature of the MU, game 1 was basically the same, Inno taking slightly more cost efficient trades until the difference gets big enough, game 2 was very similar but Inno didn't take was too slow and the mutas stopped him dead in his tracks, you can't allow a single slip with a style like that (or in TvZ at all or the 80 drones bury you in units)

True, it even denied us the only match-up we could truly enjoy.

Yeah you're right the ling counterattacks came after the muta counterattack. Serral was definitely ahead though. You don't send ~half of your army supply across the map for a counterattack with your opponent at your 4th/5th base unless you're absolutely desperate and trying to force a base trade or if you're ahead enough to feel comfortable with defending a push with half your army somewhere else.
