Also Puck vs DesRow, winner play JohnSnow, and the winner of that probably play noregret or Guitarcheesse. Meanwhile MaSa has the easiest bracket of all time, no real pro until the semi-final.
Edit: MaSa is out first round, I guess he didn't show up, he is going the regret this one...

Well, the bracket page says it wasn't easy enough for MaSa.

MaSa doesn't have full Canadian citizenship yet apparently, so he's screwed out of WCS for the time being

That's incredibly stupid. One of the most idiotic things I've ever seen in the WCS system.

To be clear, he's eligible to participate in the main event through the normal open signups, but these 8 slots (out of 96 slots in the tournament) are citizenship based.
On January 10 2016 02:26 Musicus wrote: Wait NA is double elim??? WTF?
Its based on number of signups whether or not its single elim due to time restrictions. For future events we will very much likely to extend the qualifiers to run over multiple days since EU will probably consistently be this large.

Oh okay. I don't really see the harm in the EU qualifier being longer and overlapping with the NA qualifier, but as long as it wasn't a mistake it's all good.

So basically he or his team have to pay his own flights for every event he wants to attend because he can't go through these.

I feel like a green card (aka permanent residency) should be sufficient since they usually mean you're there for the long term.
Or do they not do green cards outside of US/Canada? I don't know

It's like a paid flight and accomodations. Beyond that DH Opens don't have qualifiers.

The tournament is open. Anyone can sign up (except for Koreans though )

Apart from the 8 paid trips, it's a standard DH open event. DH open never had qualifiers. There are 96 spots as always, but this year 8 are paid for, 88 players will have to pay themselves and request a spot.

I recommend a re-branding: DH Almost-Open
MaSa should still have been able to play in this. That's just stupid. He didn't come to Canada when he was 12 to be a progamer playing WCS.

So WCS makes the ForGG rule but won't let Masa compete in Canada?
What does it mean for Polt and Violet?
Adebisi said they cant play this tournament either, same rule for them
To be clear with the current structure they can compete in WCS Circuit events, but not passport qualifiers, passport qualifiers are ONLY for citizens.
Is every qualifier that provides paid trips for WCS Circuit events a passport qualifier?
No, just like DreamHack Open primarily has always been about open signups and on-site participation, IEM I'm sure will continue to be primarily online qualifiers with paid trips and its only 8 slots for each WCS 5,000 event that go to the passport qualifiers, so they can have 24 or however many other slots allotted however they prefer (of course I can't speak for them).
You can see for WCS 10,000 events the breakdown of the 32 players is:
Reserved Regional seeds The WCS Circuit Residency requirements apply to all spots. Some spots have additional regional residency requirements (8) Regional Challenger (2) Europe, Africa, Middle East (2) North America (USA, Canada) (1) Latin America (1) China (1) Oceania, Southeast Asia, Japan (1) Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau (14) Server Qualifiers (8) EU Server Qualifier 1st-8th (6) AM Server Qualifier 1st-6th (2) National Qualifiers Citizens from hosting nation eligible (8) WCS Standings Invites 2015 WCS Standings will be used for Winter Championship 2016 WCS Standings will be used for Spring and Summer Championship
The server qualifiers are open for all WCS eligible players, so its not just citizenship based, etc.

Yeah, so only 3 chances, but at least that's as many chances as last year with WCS Premier. Masa had no chance to qualify for DH events last year too. Still sucks for him compared to the others, but at least it doesn't mean his whole sc2 career is basically over.

there's no way this was seeded since the bottom bracket has 95% of all the top na players in this qualifier, once again dh qualifiers admins not knowing how to run a bracket (no winners bracket advantage for the SEA qualifier.... wtf?)

I mean, nobody had a chance at qualifying for DH Opens. But MaSa will always be forced to pay for his own travels if he wants to play DH now, unless his team can cover all the expenses every time, other players living in the same country get a chance to get a free trip for pretty arbitrary reasons. I'm not sure what a Canada-Germany trip costs, but considering only top 16 gets money, it's probably not worth it for him to sign up for the Open either.

Both countries are in UEFA, and even the Mongolian guy played the EU qualifier so meh. e: also pretty sure that EU = Europe, Middle East and Africa, at least they do so for the WCS qualifiers.
I don't really care about arbitrary geographic borders anyway tbh
Double Elimination bracket for NA , Single Elimination for Europe because EU has _more players_. Is it only completely unacceptable to me? I dare say EU is already very hard to qualify with 2 spots and no double elim makes it even harder. I think its completely unreasonable even if it makes the qualifier longer. You might as well do 2 qualifiers with 1 spot but giving one region players 2 shots and another region 1 for that reason .... is .

Yes. He's been doing really well in Legacy. Top 5 foreign P for sure. Imo top2.
But I believe State will take the spot either way.
That is bad news for foreign P, because the game I just watched he played absolutely terrible and was outclassed by JonSnow
Well foreign P's have been failling hard to foreign Z's. We are waiting for a patch :D
Does this patch include any motivation for foreign protoss player to train harder and learn timings like koreans do?
Don't Korean P's also have a sub 50% winrate vs Zerg? not as bad as 42% iirc but still something not good lol
Don't quite know. Too early to say, but the games I have seen so far in GSL etc. the protoss played good and won. So far no Zergs qualified only 2 protoss and 3 terrans if I remember correctly.
I think if maps change soon then balance will be better. Korean protoss and terrans are currently showing the way with great dedication to the game and meticulous timings

Adebisi said on twitter that it was done using RNG not seeding if I remember correctly
yeah maybe i'm just old fashioned but back in the day any big tourny + paid travel qualifier was seeded no exceptions
Oh haha I'm in the same boat, that bottom bracket is a bit absurd.
IEM and DH havent seeded bracket in it feels like years?
IEM qualifiers have seeds.
BTW, does HTOMario have an american citizenship? Otherwise why is he allowed to play this qualifier while Masa was dqed?
Semper is an up and coming Canadian Terran. He's pretty good from what I'd seen, probably capable of beating Scarlett if he plays well
wow then he must be really good, because Scarlett is stronger than all other NA combined in my humble opinion.
Great to see new canadian terrans, but I think Scarlett gonna win very easy like always because absolutely great gaming skill
Scarlett has not dominate NA scene in a few year now, she lost to many NA player in 2014-2015, i still think she will qualify today.
I am follower of Scarlett fan club. She plays a lot she says. So with training like she is doing now I think she is going to stomp through that qualifier. She looked great in Nation Wars too.

Does this patch include any motivation for foreign protoss player to train harder and learn timings like koreans do?
puCK did 3-1 Reality yesterday so he must be doing something right
Adept? Also Reality will forever be the dumbass terran that doesn't wall off in tvz on a map with inbase nat while going cc first I will not be suprised if he got 4-0ed by johhnyrecco

Results from which tournaments? He hasn't been playing the EU/NA tournaments yet. It's also just my opinion. I've watched all top Protoss streams. And State has some skills that none of the others come near. You should watch his stream. You'll be a believer in no time. If you ever watch streams that aren't zerg.

It's Dreamhack, the kings of terrible formats. What did you expect, them to make a decision that made sense? Its pretty clear they don't really care too much about SC2 anyways, so its not surprising.

He lives in Korea and has been training there for 2 years or so. He was on Prime before and tried to qualify for GSL etc. but without success so far. He is playing a lot right now though and MC will coach him once a week at his place, so I still think he should become really good in the long run.

And State has some skills that none of the others come near. You should watch his stream. You'll be a believer in no time. If you ever watch streams that aren't zerg.
being the best protoss streamer does not get you even close to be top foreigner... showtime/lilbow/ptitdrogo don't even stream, and Mana and others are still better. and that's only talking about protoss players, he is not even top 20 foreigners imo
Have you even seen him play?
Top100 GM Kr over a loooong period of time is not top20 foreigner? ARE YOU SHITTING ME?
I'd love to see a best-of series between Mana and State. I believe State has a big edge, but I'd like to see it played out. Sadly it wont happen because of servers.
Isn't Lisandro a random EU GM that is also top 100 GM KR?

wow then he must be really good, because Scarlett is stronger than all other NA combined in my humble opinion.
Great to see new canadian terrans, but I think Scarlett gonna win very easy like always because absolutely great gaming skill
Scarlett has not dominate NA scene in a few year now, she lost to many NA player in 2014-2015, i still think she will qualify today.
I don't think Scarlett can be considered favorite over State. Not even close. She was very good, but hardly plays according to her twitter. State plays 9 hours a day on Kr GM.
She barely plays according to her twitter, but according to her match history she's been rocking NA ladder pretty hard.
I'm not saying she's a scrub. I'm saying State is the best foreigner atm. Or very close to.
How can he be the best foreigner? I am of very different opinion there. Maybe if we see results soon. I can't find any notable achievements from "State", but maybe he will be good in future?
Lets see and wait. For now I don't think State is Top5 foreigner.

Maybe you are right and he will be good in future. He in korea training? Does he play GSL or other korea tournaments? It would be cool to see good foreigner in korea agian like IdrA or Jinro back in WoL

He lives in Korea and has been training there for 2 years or so. He was on Prime before and tried to qualify for GSL etc. but without success so far. He is playing a lot right now though and MC will coach him once a week at his place, so I still think he should become really good in the long run.

I'd love to see a best-of series between Mana and State. I believe State has a big edge, but I'd like to see it played out. Sadly it wont happen because of servers.
Catz has been a top 100-50 kr gm forever, he gets top 1 GM on NA with 0 effort when he plays. Is he a top foreigner?
Top1 zero effort. Then why is he not a pro gamer?
Because he is about as good as state?
Then why are there a lot of pro gamers lower on NA ladder?
Passion or Poor life choices take your pick. What are you even arguing for anymore :D I brought catz up as an example that top 100 gm on kr doesn't mean that much if you want to live of your skill
I am arguying that you can be a pro gamer with top 100 gm
And that anyone who can get top100 GM on a regular basis will be able to make a good living. Pretty easily. People are acting like there are only 10 pro SC2 players.

Lets see and wait. For now I don't think State is Top5 foreigner.
Edit : WOW scarlett creep spread is monster
Results from which tournaments? He hasn't been playing the EU/NA tournaments yet. It's also just my opinion. I've watched all top Protoss streams. And State has some skills that none of the others come near. You should watch his stream. You'll be a believer in no time. If you ever watch streams that aren't zerg.
being the best protoss streamer does not get you even close to be top foreigner... showtime/lilbow/ptitdrogo don't even stream, and Mana and others are still better. and that's only talking about protoss players, he is not even top 20 foreigners imo

it has always been the same. High GM KR is insane, the mark varying but like if you're top 50 you're pretty good apparently. On the other hand Departure was top 16 and struggled a lot in actual tournaments.

Don't be that focused on ladder. Pro players don't pay attention to ranking, it is just everyday practice outside CG and tournaments. For example, Stephano used to quit a ladder game if he was not satisfied with injections or other stuff. He could try 10 times in a row a specific build order just to know if it was worth it.

The best place right now is probably somewhere in EU with a good internet connection and quite a low living cost. Would be fun to determine exactly where. Not far from an airport is pretty cool too.

I think sentries are a bit underused right now. If you don't go stargate getting the hallucinated scout is awesome.

When Stephano was in his prime he was doing 61-2 runs and things like that. When Bomber and MarineKing were tearing it up in the GSL they also destroyed the ladder. The top of the ladder always meant something, it's just that some players were too predictable or too nervous in tourneys but the ladder has been quite a good indicator of form :o

you go with a decent concave. you kill everything and then immortals/archons are left and destroy lurkers. If the Z stands on top of them there is some nice splash. It obviously doesn't work against mass lurker but you can transition into everything while going for some harassment.

That was a pretty bad fight from state. Should have been pretty easy vs those lurkers considering he had 8 phoenix with full energy and scarlet had no antiair

Didn't catch the very end, did Scarlett win? Why does State has such a high ping btw?
Funny and sad at the same time how Scarlett in spite of being zerg and ravagers being super big splitted better than a top european T today vs disruptors, I guess some days you are off tho.

if we're talking about Kas he has splitting issues in general imo.

Scarlett completely dominated State. It was a pleasure to watch. Very high level zerg play

Yeah, MC just told State this week that he should stop with his Stalker play and do chargelot/archon/Immortal. Your build looks like the perfect counter indeed. I loved how you build more lings in game 2 to counter the disruptors .
Can you tell us at which time you want how many lurkers out to stop the first big chargelot push?
I know State is playing from Korea but I think I saw this Scan guy play from Korea on EU Central with 130-150 ping, how can State have 300 on NA? o_o
Yeah I'm talking about Kas (I don't think many streamed these very games), I noticed some suspect splits against disruptors in Nation Wars (probably against USA?) but I thought it was because of ping or whatever.

There are different NA servers. Some (or one) of them are particularly bad from Korea.

Yeah I saw the games against Balrog and it was on EU so no ping indeed, and you talked about TvZ issues too, kinda weird since afaik he comes from Warcraft 3 and most pros coming from it are strong micro wise. Thanksfully for him his multitask is good when being the agressor.

Yeah it's sad (edit: for up-and-comers) that only the later rounds count because only top players have a good winrate with such a system, a bit like only highest GM (or lowest bronze) players got more (less) than a 50% winrate. Gl in the rest of the tournament

Inject, building units, creep, micro other units and attacking all take very much APM. Even with shift it is hard to burrow lurker perfectly. Takes really a lot of micro !

What I really miss is the times when there were foreigners who dared to practice and participate in Korea. All WCS's except the first one destroyed that unfortunately..

He just cares about gameplay, not about "not being casted"

Ehh HuK always tells casters to get out, State tried it with Casters and it lagged (and he thinks it lagged cuz of casters which could obviously be a misjudgement) so I think its quite reasonable to ask to be castet as few times as possible, ofcourse he will accept the rules and allow the official casters should the request

well the toss didn't even need units to defend vs 12 marines, he just made 2 pylons at the ramp. Its ridiculous. It should at least be buildings that have no other purpose then attack/defense. Like cannons

Every ZvP I watch is that ;< e; but nah his early push did nothing and his third was kinda late even though puck's attack failed too

As opposed to before where he would have just overcharged the Nexus?

TBH I always thought overcharge is strong, but being able to spam it and spread it easily across the whole base is kinda stupid. 2-3 pylons and you are safe. So there is a difference: its easily 2-3x more powerful while costing less

Wow Neeb, blazing a hot trail through the Losers Bracket. He's a beast.
Also grats to MCanning for getting to the WB finals :o that's insanely impressive from him (though the competition between the upper bracket and lower bracket is definitely noticable)

Seems fair to me. Worked his way all the way from the bottom of the loser's bracket. That determination though! Will be cheering for Neeb in the main tourney.

He was a strong terran too :D
yeah his ro16 in WCS NA with a shit ton of Koreans was really impressive. I'm really happy that he got the slot, he wouldn't have been at DH without it and he's clearly Murica's hope.
The more I look at that bracket the crazier it is. The McCanning/Kifire side vs the Scarlett side. Still, I guess with double elim no harm no foul. I hope State, HuK, and Puck all fly out to compete. It's high time NA gets back into this game.

I'm pretty sure HTOMario is a permanent resident of the USA.

MaSa is a permanent resident of Canada. He was excluded because he doesn't have citizenship (and he likely won't get it any time soon either).
I live in Germany, in Munich, it's a small town for me, I don't understand yet, how to meet people here. Somebody is going to Leipzig and looking for a party? I don't wanna go there on my own. Don't speak much German and don't know the country...
