Well the funny thing is that you can't. You can win the fight, but the whole point of mutas is not to fight. To be faster in a basetrade, and to have the ability to return to take that fight, if you are not going to win the trade.

Once you have phoenix range it's pretty hard to lose the base race.

All those maps are very rage inducing but somehow they don't make the game completely unbalanced so I guess someone at Blizzard deserves some credit

Yes but what is your point? Historicly, games where zerg commits to muta, it doesn't go that far.
The most common way it has played out, is Protoss scouting it late, or not knowing that they would actually use spire, spotting mutas as they hit their base, or are heading there. Protoss are forced to walk across the map and having to kill one or two more bases. If Protoss spots it in time, they either go double stargate or all in.
