I think I've only ever heard the exact opposite before. The boring unit problem is understandable. I don't find the Roach as intrinsically boring as you do, but I'd like to see its burrowing capabilities emphasized more heavily, at least in the mid and late game. I kind of liked the idea of burrowed units getting +1 armor. Maybe a Roach could have a unique ability to take no damage from projectiles during its burrow animation. I have more issues with Hydralisks, honestly. Their frontswing needs to be lowered to something closer to Marines' so that there's more reward for microing them. Well, I'm just considering what kinds of dynamics I really like watching in StarCraft II, and which ones I don't. I like Storm vs. Marines, ling/Bane vs. Marines, ling/Bane vs Tanks or Widow Mines and Marine/Tank mirrors above most. I also like Phoenixes, blink Stalkers, Mutalisks and the like. The driving theme there is that these are fast, mobile units that can do a lot of damage but also die very easily. And for the first group, they're also very cheap, meaning that they can be replaced easily even when you do lose some, and that you can therefore afford to risk them in harassment moves while doing something else. Marine drops and 'ling runbys occur throughout the game, but Phoenixes, blink Stalkers and Mutalisks tend to be the focus of that player's plan, whenever they're in use. Because they're too expensive to lose. The other half of that equation is powerful splash damage that isn't really sustainable. Storms require a ton of energy and are slow, vulnerable ground units. Banelings die on use. Siege Tanks have a whole list of interesting flaws. In contrast, splash like the Colossus' is awful because it's got range and little vulnerability - its only flaw, vulnerability to air attacks, means that entire units have been designed just to counter the Colossus, and forces players to use them. Plus, it is too expensive to lose, so it encourages the Protoss to deathball to protect his Colossi. But higher units like Roaches and Marauders aren't vulnerable to the good kind of splash, they can wade through Storm, tank Banelings and close down on Tanks. Units like Zealots at least have the flaw of being melee, so they're generally pure tanking units, but Roaches and Marauders also have enough range to be decent damage dealing units, meaning they're too reliable as a core unit. That means it's harder to hold an attack from these kinds of units with a smaller, well-positioned force. You need a lot of firepower to take them down, and that encourages deathballing too. That's my opinion, at least. I'm no game designer. | ||
