This tournament is good news for SC2 !
A year-long series of individual Clan Wars for fun and profit coming with Patch 2.1. Broadcast live exclusively on MLG.tv
Major League Gaming
Proleague Format Teams can show the depth of their roster with individual members picked to play a single map each, with an ace match as the decider should it get to that point. This provides a chance for as many players as possible to show their skills while preventing teams with a single star player from running rampant over an entire opposing teams roster. The default format will be Best of 7 however there will be flexibility allowing smaller teams to play a Best of 5 instead. Teams will require a minimum of 5 players for BO7 and 3 players for BO5 formats. Teams can re-use players in the 2v2 match and the ace match can be any player including those who have previously played.
New Maps SHOUTcraft Clan Wars will showcase an entire roster of non-standard tournament maps from the Teamliquid map-making community, ranging from the uncommon to the downright outrageous. This will allow map-makers to gain valuable exposure, give spectators fresh experiences including matches that shake up the way Starcraft is played and allow teams preparing for big events to keep their tournament builds secret. Maps with half-bases? Sure. All-gold minerals? Why not? Floating destructible islands? We can do that. Raising lava? Absolutely! The sky is the limit for map design and we will be rotating out our maps on a regular basis to keep things interesting. Teams will be given the map list in advance so they have plenty of time to prepare unique builds for these unusual maps. We hope the use of new maps will also give a more exciting experience to the viewer, who might be tired of watching yet another game on Bel’shir.
Read more here.
Axiom, StarTale, IM, MVP, EG, Liquid, ROOT, mYinsanity, Millenium, Acer, mousesports, TeamWho and IvDGaming will play.

I'm halfway through the announcement page and this is already all kinds of amazing. Edit: And the other half of it didn't disappoint either. TB literally not killing Esports again.
|
I wonder how much BW and Starbow they'll incorporate. I can't imagine many players or teams will want to spend time practicing those.

The page indicates that we will be using at most 1 of those maps per series. It's also worth noting that many teams have players that literally have nothing else to practice for after being eliminated from WCS, so it's more likely those players will be willing to spend some time with Starbow or SC2BW. Plenty of teams have players that are already playing this maps for fun anyway.
|
Wow, might watch that one. Will be very interesting how those maps/mods work out.
From a semi distant view, TB seems like the one trying things out and bringing fresh air, need alot more of that.
|
IM playing? I'm watching.
|

Overall its an awesome concept with a great prizepool and amazing teams.

Looks great, nice to see a few Korean teams in there. Can't wait to watch.
|
Wow, this looks amazing! Can't wait for this to start, should be a blast! Also, is TB solo casting this entire thing?

|
This looks really promising, excellent work! It's a pity we wont see mouz though.
|
The 'original' Kespa teams probably not interested, eh? That's too bad, could be amazing fun watching Fantasy playing SC2:BW or sOs playing Starbow. Maybe after Proleague ends?
In any way, even without those teams, this event seems like so much fun. I will try to not miss any of those matches
|
sick news, but why ivd gaming? i dont think they stand a chance at all, mouz or acer would be better choice
|
So good, TB saving esports!
Also Starbow
|
And here I thought Starbow was kinda interesting, but they'd never get any Korean pros to play the mod in a serious way.
Way to go, TB!
|
This is insane, is going to be sooooo interesting ^_^
Thank you Genna & John for this!
|
Well, you're working with MLG. But, this is awesome. Looking forward to some epic Starbow and crazy hijinks on round map.
|
that looks nice. Would have loved to see mouz participate

Yeah I don't understand that either.... Maybe teams can join and leave at will?
|
sniff sniff... whats that smell?
is it... fresh air?
mYi fighting!
|
Nice, looks like a huge gap between some teams and the rest though.
|
o... my...... GOOOODD!!!!!! I want it! I want it! I want it! I want it! I want it! I hope it's a good time for EU!
I don't get that IM and MVP are interested. They have proleague commitment. I would have rather seen Azubu, acer or mouz. I already get to see kespa teams play.
|
As I was reading, I thought to myself, "Man, this sounds ambitious. I hope they realize how unwieldy something like this could be." Then, pretty much the next sentence I read: "All of this sounds ambitious, but in reality it has been built from the ground up to be a sustainable model that can happen whenever is convenient for the teams." Gave me even more confidence in this event.
So many cool ideas being tried out here, and so much potential for really, really fun games. Thank you MLG and TB! I sincerely hope this is a successful experiment for everyone involved.
|
Wow, hybrid proleague's back!
Seriously though, this looks fun, if the website's anything to go by we should see great production value.

It could happen but our initial enquiries were met with the usual Kespa resistance to anything that's competing in some way with Proleague. That attitude may change once the Proleague season is over.
|
Bummer Acer didn't join, but I'm still thrilled to see this organized, and I'll be watching nearly every match!
|
This is something I always wanted to see. A league to exist to showcase players and teams for sponsors. Especially if a player is unable to qualify for major tournaments, teamleagues have always give a forgotten player a chance in the spotlight. Absolutely love the inclusion of 2v2s and more custom maps. Like what was talked about on Unfiltered yesterday, new maps bring strategic diversity and is more interesting for the spectator.
I was trying to figure out what team was missing and I can't help but notice Acer is not there. Is there any reason for Acer not participating?
|
Sounds good. But no mouz and no acer so not that interesting to me.

You make the assumption that these teams weren't ask and declined.

Doesn't say when it starts? or does it somewhere?

Looks like a lot of fun. Interesting roster of team too. Definitely gonna watch.

Acer did not confirm their participation. We also asked Mousesports and received no reply. However there is no cap on the number of teams that can participate (though we aren't going to let everyone in because that dilutes the prizepool). Teams can join and leave at will since it's not a league, so you could very well see those teams and others in the future.

Literally the first sentence

I must be blind because I don't see that.
While the majority of points in a series will be decided in 1v1s, these non-standard formats will be sprinkled in to spice up the series.
Can't wait to see it though ^^

I really hope that more "conventional" community-made maps get used in this tournament, not just gimmick maps. I do look forward to seeing how those gimmick maps play out, but I'd be upset if SHOUTcraft provided all this exposure for them and none for some legitimately good community-made maps that are more conventional, like Cloud Kingdom.

Is there going to be a set criteria or qualification system for additional teams or will it be based off of invitations as well?
|
MVP and IM participating in both this and PL and ofc individual tournaments? I'm not sure if they can manage to do that.
|
Looks pretty awesome to me
|
Awesome! I hope this gives Starbow more exposure to Korea. We really need to get it translated soon. ;;
|
This is disgustingly crazy. Holy shit !
However there is a thing that I don't understand. Will it be one clan war per week or per month ? Given that there is a set 5k$ prize pool I guess the calendar is supposed to be quite regular.
|
Nice to hear also that Golden is casting this in Korean, so there's more exposure.
|
Awesome stuff. Any news on Acer? It seems a little odd that they're not in this.
Edit: ah was on page 2, too bad, but I hope they join in the future. Loving the SB inclusion, gives it some exposure without pushing it too hard before it's ready.

Big thank you to the Bains and MLG, this sounds so great!

I did not expect korean teams to participate.I can't wait!!!

Sounds great!
So how is the money distributed and how often do teams play in a month? Do you try to even out the playing oppurtunities over the whole roster of teams or is that not a priority (e.g. more popular teams play more often than others)?

This feels more like CSL format than Proleague format..
No Acer... How about Axiom-Acer?

KeSPA teams should really consider this. They could give their b-teams some excellent experience and still remain competitive. I hope Coach Park is busy sending emails to the CJ bosses about this right now.

Ah that's cool. The flexibility with this format sounds great. This is also good considering that half of the initial 8 teams have players around the globe. I wonder how difficult the scheduling of this is going to be and how frequent clan wars will be.
|
Wow, didn't expect IM and MVP to join since they're also in SPL.
Looks awesome all around, though I have to wonder why Starbow AND SC2: BW? I realize the difference between the two, but I can't help feeling a little redundancy. I'd rather just Starbow.

Sorry, MLG, you lost my views a long time ago.

The map pool would be enough for me to tune in, regardless of who'd be playing.
But these line-up of teams is incredible.
Just out of curiosity - are the games going to be played on a mutually decided server or are they going to be NA only?

The nonstandard maps are one of the main reasons the Kespa teams agreed to play. They don't have to show their builds for Proleague, they can use b-teamers more effectively as well as unorthodox builds and cheeses. With Proleague only being a BO5 now they have more players available to use in Clan Wars.
Acer
Acer participation is pending. We've spoken again since the announcement.

I doubt we'll be going out of our way to feature "Standard" maps. WCS has plenty of those, as does every other tournament in the scene. We'd rather be the ones shooting for the moon since no-one else is. Some maps might not work out but this is about the only place we get to try them anyway.

Team league plus funky maps?
Yes to all of this.
Can't wait to see some ridiculous games and ultimate creativity.

Questions for TotalBiscuit:
1. Are there plans to change the map pool after each round (assuming SHOUTcraft Clan Wars is split into multiple rounds like Proleague is.)
2. Are there plans to adopt the All-Kill format which has been used in some rounds of Proleague and even GSTL?
3. Why incorporate 2v2 and mods such as Starbow and SC2BW in such a tournament? I remember when MCSL had a 2v2 round and it made the league feel a bit too unorthodox, as much as the 2v2 scene needs some much-deserved promotion. There was also the controversy and hate that the BW/SC2 Hybrid Proleague received too. Wouldn't 2v2/Starbow/SC2BW be better utilized within separate events? (such as a showmatch or a separate league entirely.)
4. Is this the 'Starbow' thing you were speculated to be doing on Nathanias's stream or is this a separate announcement altogether?
5. Would you consider reintroducing early-Wings maps into the map pool such as Blistering Sands, Jungle Basin, Desert Oasis, Steppes of War, Xel'naga Caverns, Incinernation Zone, Crevasse, Terminus RE, Testbug, Typhon Peaks, Delta Quadrant, etc in a HotS setting?

Brilliant insanity. That's what this tournament format is, brilliant insanity. 2v2? Starbow? Bizarre maps from the community? Mix just one of those things in and everyone hates the tournament, but all of them at once? It's so crazy it might actually work. The best (and craziest) part is that this is actually well thought-out. TB is making every mistake in the book at once, but he has planned it all out and is utilizing the strengths of all his weird decisions, instead of trying to act like all the standard tournaments out there. I just love it when people turn all our preconceptions on their head like this, but right now this tournament is only amazing in theory. I can't wait to see what it looks like in practice.

I'm now dreaming of more Proleague teams signing up when the season finishes. Imagine a clan war between KT and EG with Flash vs Jaedong in StarBow. Oh man, that would be so awesome.

For 1, 2 and 3 - if I understood and read the announcement correctly, this is not a tournament, this is more like a series of showmatches played out under the roof of Shoutcraft Clan Wars.

I'm not TotalBiscuit... lol
But.. 3. I don't think this is a tournament nor a league. From what he has said and what I can infer from the announcement, treat each individual clan war as a team showmatch.
4. Yes, that is Starbow and keep in mind it is still in development.

1. There are no rounds. It is not a league.
2. No. We feel All-kill formats do not synergise well with our map strategy, where we give the teams a lot of time to prepare builds for these unusual maps. We also feel All-kill benefits teams with "star players" too much, more than a well-rounded and deep team roster.
3. Because we want to.
4. Yes
5. No. The community map development scene gets too little attention as it is. I strongly disagree with the idea that map slots should be taken up by old Blizzard maps instead of new community creations.

TB answered this earlier in the thread, he said that it's invite only and the prize pool isn't going to be diluted by having a load of teams in it. Which is a good thing.

It's awarded on a match by match basis. We're looking at a 70:30 split at the moment. As it stands the $5000 budget a month will support 10 Clan Wars at $500 a piece.

Would other teams be able to join?

Can't have ClanCraft, because it sounds too much like LANCraft, which will result in people remembering that there is no LAN, and Blizzard doesn't want that.

Sounds awesome! But almost all of these maps kind of feel like they would never work in SC2 : /
Hope some mapmaker ports this to BW though because the concepts are amazing (Of course the lava wouldn't work and most of these maps already have their roots in BW, but still)
Also one of the maps was inspired by Iron Curtain? An SSL map made for SSL8 , but never played because it was determined to be completely broken even in BW.

It's also worth noting that many teams have players that literally have nothing else to practice for after being eliminated from WCS, so it's more likely those players will be willing to spend some time with Starbow or SC2BW. Plenty of teams have players that are already playing this maps for fun anyway. I'm worried that some of these maps will only be played in SB and SC2BW because the players will completely avoid playing SC2 on some of these maps because of map concepts.
Also both SC2BW still has so many kinks (when playing in BW mode- More than 12 units selected before deselection, MBS, etc) Can I suggest playing in SC2 settings to avoid these problems?

IM used to field B-Teamers even in the GSTL. It's a Herculean task to get teams like that to send the star players into the lineup sometimes.
If you want IM to field their A-Teamers, you would need to hire the Yakuza AND the Triads to visit IM's coach Kang in order to "persuade" him, and even then there's only a 65% chance he'll bow down to the pressure.

Y'know what's telling about how stagnant map design is right now? That people think this pool we have here is "crazy". This is mild compared to some of the ideas we had. I think once people see the games they will be surprised at just how sane the maps actually are.
|
|
Something to bear in mind as they ask for more teams. The teams we invite, the less prize money there is to go around. I have no intention of throwing open the gates to any and all teams at the expense of the ones we already have. If we take on any more teams to the event it'll be with careful consideration.
|
10 teams is already a lot, any more than 1 or 2 more and it becomes all too diluted. I'm bummed about no Acer too, but let's just wait and see. It's still a really cool initiative, someone trying new stuff and who is actually willing to take some risks to do it. It's been far too long since anyone tried to stick their neck out with new shit in this game.

Hahaha, could you share some of the map design ideas that were going around, but you guys ultimately rejected? How long was the process of map selection?
Here's the thing if it weren't for protoss most of these designs would have worked out, but with current game design it just seems like we'll get some interesting TvT, TvZ and ZvZ and broken PvX.

Since there's some frequently asked questions, here's a mini FAQ.
Q: Will there be offline matches? A: No. We are hosting teams from 3 different regions, the event will be played online, alternating servers where necessary to keep things fair
Q: Will it be cast live or from replays? A: Live. The viewers have made it abundantly clear over the last few years that replay casting is not acceptable in a streaming environment
Q: Is this a league? A: It's not a league. There are no standings. There are no rounds. There is no elimination. Wars will be organised, announced and then cast. Each war is its own stand-alone event under the same banner. Teams on the roster are not guaranteed wars nor are they guaranteed to play against each other team on the roster (though it would be nice if that happened). We hope to accommodate each team as best we can.
Q: How does the prize money work? A: At present we are looking at offering $500 split 70:30 per War for a total of 10 wars per month, however right now we can't guarantee that there will be that many events every month due to the wide variety of factors involved. That's our "ideal scenario". Increased funding would most likely result in higher prize money for each war rather than more wars per month, due to the time constraints involved for myself and the teams.
Q: Will it also be on Twitch? A: No. The English stream is exclusive to MLG.tv. The exception to this is the Korean cast which will take place on Twitch and will initially be hosted and cast by Golden.
Q: Can you further explain the format. Will both Starbow and SC2BW be used all the time? A: The arcade maps will not be used all the time. In some series we just won't have either of them, that's really down to the teams competing. Some teams such as ROOT and Axiom have players who are very skilled at Starbow and are willing to use it. Others not so much. At most there will be 1 arcade map per war. We will never include both. At present there are two formats we will be switching between.
5x 1v1 1x 2v2 1x Ace Match
and
4x 1v1 1x Arcade map 1x 2v2 1x Ace Match
Each 1v1 and arcade map will require a different player. Players can be re-used in the 2v2 and any player can be chosen for the ace, so there is the potential of having the same player compete 3 teams. That said we feel that the mandatory inclusion of the 2v2 will mitigate the effects of any one star player, since 2v2 is relatively unexplored and individual skill is not as large a factor in that matchup.
Q: Will there be a co-caster? A: Ideally yes but they would have to give their time for free since the budget does not extend to paying for a co-caster. It will most likely be a mix of solo casts and volunteer guest commentators.
All the other stuff I think is covered in the post.
|
Wow I picked a good few weeks to not show up in map skype. >_>

TB you by no means have to answer this, but were all the previous shoutcraft casters paid to be there?
Assuming that thats true, I definitely think that compensating casters is the way to go and I also don't condemn you for deciding to go more solo cast orientated considering that your budget for this event is limited.

The only event that did not have a compensated co-caster was SHOUTcraft America, since everyone there did it for free to support the NA scene.

I have a question for your FAQ - "how can we support this?" (other than with our eyeballs). Specific twitch channel subscription? (and which? yours, MLG's, some new one?).
edit: p.s. I love the individual war format. Avoids the troubles that plauged NASL when a scheduling conflict resulted in a walkover which resulted in a lot of disillusionment and caveats around everyone's scores. Scheduling people who want to be there & can be there seems like a great system.

I'd like to watch this for the sheer interest I have in watching pro 2v2 matches =P

Might I suggest you check the most visible account for the team on Teamliquid in future for PMs regularly? Lord knows what you'll miss if you don't

I am pretty sure you can find willing amateur cocasters here on TL. Might be risky though because they might not be great, but I am sure if you call out to TL you'll be able to get a bunch of community streams

Sounds really good, looking forward to this although 10 clanwars per month seem a bit much to me, don't really see 10 viable spots with wcs, pl etc "blocking" nearly every primetime slot of the week once they all started.

Wow, great idea and I have to say I am looking forward to it! Keep the awesome work up, TB, you are one of the most innovative minds in our community and have the power to make your ideas reality.

I really like the 2v2 part! but TB, please inform yourself about proper 2v2 maps so it doesn't end in a complete rushfest like in the PL pre season.

You should probably have a look at the 2v2 map the guys designed for this. It's specifically designed against that very thing.

With WCS only airing 2 nights a week, we're not gonna have any problems. Proleagues times are completely irrelevant, we'd never cast at 4am EST, we're shooting for US-friendly times here, ideally not too late in the EU either (so looking at around 4-5pm EST or so onwards for a 2-3 hour event). I think you'd be surprised how much easier it's going to be to dodge WCS now that Blizzard got savvy with their saturation.

Well I'm incredibly excited for this. Much love, TB

It was already mentioned, that there's no need for an open qualifier, because it's no league. These are Clanwars in a rather open environment with teams joining and leaving (If they want to :-P ).
Overall: Great stuff! Everyone talks about how great it'd be to have some unconventional stuff - and you just do it!

This looks really cool. I especially like the idea of doing it all on non-standard maps. Fuck all the complainers who whenever they see a new map go "THIS FEATURE HERE IS IMBALANCED FOR RACE X" (oh and same for progamer who rather play game #1482 on Bel'Shir Vestige over game #1 on a new map). Fresh is good. If some new non-standard map turns out to be completely broken in some way it will be fixed or removed soon anyway.

I just wonder will there be any community casters allowed to cover this awsone event.

There should be a bridge that breaks under the weight of too many units at once, as anti deathball prevention.

Either all in or 20min no rush? I can certainly see where you are coming from, but do these two sharp predictions not leave Plenty of space in between for other things? Players are more creative when given opportunities and I feel like such maps and tournaments are needed - as the bold statements and provocations which they certainly are.
Great opportunity here!

That's becasue he simply linked the maps that were submitted. Honestly a bunch of mapmakers just submitted the maps that they currently had ready. I think only New Pompeii got more polished and finished up for this tournament specifically.
That happened because foreign mapmaking scene was almost dead, we couldn't make new maps in time and we still had quality maps ready that were never used (and still do have some that weren't submitted). Next time we'll have more maps specifically made for this.

There will only be 1 match of it per war so it doesn't matter too much. Also none of the rules are set in stone. Because it is not a league TB is free to change the rules whenever he wants.

Not enough Zergs. I am genuinely surprised to not see Iaguz's name there though, anybody know what's up?

Australia ladder is all zergs. Their fauna is weird. So lineup is surprisingly diverse.

iaguz will be added to the Australian roster that will now be named "Team Who?"

What about Fnatic tho?

Years from now on, they will ask you, where were you, when TB became the God of all that exists.
Thanks for everything TB, and not only for Starcraft.

Awesome, can't wait for this to kick off and see some new unique maps! :D

This is great !!
When do we start?

Let's make some more cool announcements!
Korean caster
I've mentioned this a few times but didn't make a formal announcement about it. Golden, popular streaming personality and former Startale pro-gamer will be casting Clan Wars in Korean. While the Korean audience may not be as large as other regions, we feel it has been neglected for far too long by foreign events and efforts should be made to reach out to that audience. This is particularly important as Korean teams often have Korean sponsors which require ROI from the regional audience in order to be satisfied. Golden was recently outfitted with new audio equipment to assist him in this venture.
Partnership with Day[9]tv and Huskystarcraft
To give maximum possible exposure and value to our teams, SHOUTcraft Clan Wars has partnered with Day[9]TV and Huskystarcraft, the two biggest names in replay casting, to cover select games from Clan Wars. Day[9] will have access to all of our replays as source material for his dailies while Husky will be able to take his pick for his popular replays casts on his Youtube channel. We feel that the addition of these two additional exposure channels alongside the livestream and VoDs on the TotalBiscuit Starcraft channel will provide huge value to the teams and their sponsors.

On Unfiltered you mentioned possibly having ToD as cocaster? Any legs to this?
Great work by the way, I am so excited for these Clan Wars.

I'd absolutely love to have ToD co-cast with me for some of the Clan Wars. That said considering we're going on at a US friendly time it might not work out so well for his sleeping schedule, we'll see.
I'm absolutely happy to have pro-players with good mics on as analytical co-casters for this stuff, I just can't offer them any money because we're running this on a paper-thin margin, assuming we make any profit on it at all.

Petraeus? More like BETRAY US!
Petraeus has bailed on ROOT and decided to join Team Who? and his downunder brethren for the Clan Wars. This does not mean he has left ROOT btw.

Am I the only one imitating TB's voice while reading his posts ?
|
That is just perfect. And more and more perfect.
If i understood right :
- Total Biscuit will cast all games. - Day[9] Will cast games on his channel how he want to (so there can be duplicates. Like you can see the game cast by Day[9] OR total biscuit). And same with Husky ?

Golden is just so awesome, ever since leaving ST he's gone out of his way to get more involved with the foreign fans and has created fun tournaments like the APM league and also other events in his initiative like the save Hyun matches, It's quite obvious he really does love this game, pretty sad we're going to lose him to the Korean military at the end of the year.

Personally I think that this is a really smart and intelligent move, I'd never thought about that. Also, he's a fun guy and I'll check his stream to watch him cast in korean >_>

What I meant with that "Clarity deserves a spot" Is that an upcoming NA team with team house etc really need the exposure to keep exsisting as a team. More teams surviving the better ! (I also love underdogs) :D
Also hands down to TB for all the awesome SC2 content you bring us!

We as the starcraft community are extremely lucky to have someone with the resources, connections and passion to pull stuff like like this off. Makes me feel warm and fuzzy on the inside.
I love you TB, no homo. (well maybe a little)
Keep up the awesome work!

Daedalus isn't a crazy map it's just a plain bad map. It's also worth noting that crazy maps in Proleague formats work well. Crazy maps in non-vetoable BO3 environments do not

Well thus far according to TLPD, Terran have 0% winrate on that map against Protoss in GSL Code A and only 25% winrate against Zerg. The sample size is not large enough yet but it was certainly large enough for many Terran to lose their shot at Code S

I'm personally fine with the KESPA switch, it was eventual, hurt, but I'm ok now , I'm fine with how things currently are with Sonic and SOSPA, but I'm kind of sad Flash didn't retire, people might hate on me for this, but Flash was literally God in Brood War and when the switch happened I just knew that however good he was he'd never compare to his Brood War self.
