It's hard to build a fan base as a average(like code s ro32-16 consistently) player because you only get to go to 1 or 2 foreign events a year. Most of the people watching the tournament have no idea who this guy is so they don't pay any attention to him. Life became " known " because of his two MLG wins more than his GSL wins for the average fan.
Your best bet is to do something like Stardust and come out of nowhere to win a prestigious event, otherwise even if you finish top 4 like Curious did very few people will remember you for that one performance. Pretty much all the foreign players with personality have either quit the game or aren't very good anymore. WCS EU is absolutely full of charismaless, faceless Europeans with no more personality than any 'random Korean'. I agree with you, It's really not even about " personality " anymore, people just want to see a western player do well. And I get that, but it's amazing to me that there's people watching Sc2 who don't like Koreans. They win absolutely everything and always will. How can people be so masochistic as to hate that but still watch? It's like following men's athletics if you hate seeing black people win.
It's not like those people want foreigners to win actually "hate" Koreans. I mean I enjoy mostly from watching players like Life or sOs who always did new things. But as a Chinese I still feel very exciting when Jim and MacSed did well in WCS NA and start to cheer for them even though Jim seems like not have any "personality" at all(at least in public). So I can quite understand these people.

I look at it a little like all the concern among US men's tennis fans about the fact that it has been a long time since an American made any big waves at a Grand Slam and there are no obvious young stars. Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic take regular flak for being too boring.
The unfortunate part for e-sport's budding maturity is that this often spins into blanket statements about all Koreans with too little credence given to individual players and their achievements. Such as the fact that Life beat more and scarier Koreans than Naniwa did. HerO and Curious don't get 3-0'd very often.

Djokovic boring? I donnnnnnnnnnnnnn't thinkkkkk soooo.

And I am still waiting for this world to stop hating.
I actually dont see many fans around here. Fans cheer on their player. Fans will be upset when he finishes second but they wil be happy he showed a good tournament. Real fans don't hate and bash others.
Life won and he was the clearly superior player. It could have been a 4-0 and people who saw the finals should be aware of it. The starcraft scene would be alot richer if people would not bring as much negativity to the table.
I like Naniwa as player and also when I see him at tournaments because he is a cool guy (even though we had our moments haha) but in the end I see a good player making a deep run in a Korean field. If anything you can be proud. Bashing a Korean or Life is stupid and if some of you guys ask Koreans to learn English or show you more of their person you should first off give them a chance. I would not feel welcome outside of Korea if I was to be Korean in Starcraft to be honest.
Well played Life, congratz. Also to Naniwa for a good show!

Well done to Life for winning A big well done to Naniwa for getting so far in such a stacked tournament :0

Finals aside the MTG Pro Tour stream did come close in viewership (which is kinda sad for SC2 as its *based* on computer competition and not an "offline" cardgame), offered games back to back, had no casters that promoted their twitter or facebook all the time and even in breaks did deck techs with the players or background information videos with the designers. Sad when a PC game featured by a ESL/Intel production can't generate more excitement. Probably the best moment that summarized the whole event was at the end during the award ceremony. Life just standing there stonefaced, looking lost while the casters and some other people did this sc2 song.

What an exiciting finals, the best I´ve seen in a while. Nani´s defense was just incredible. Holy shit, that perseverance and that will to win. That´s what sports is about.

Just finished watching the VODS for the final day.
Absolutely incredible tournament, impressed with Life as always
But what wow, Naniwa.
Just an incredible effort and amazing play. I can't see an argument for him not being the best foreigner at the moment.

Scarlett getting RO4 WCS NA, RO8 S2 Finals and this season TBD. If she places well this season then she's done much better than Naniwa.

As Nani said during this IEM, they need to play each other to know who is the best foreigner atm, but they sure are top 2.

This final was a lot closer than 4 - 2. Remember that game 4 on whirlwind? It could just as well have gone to naniwa and we would have had a 2 - 2 score. My point is that this final was amazing and not only did we get a foreigner vs one of the best koreans but it was not the usual 4 - 0 or 4 - 1 but actualy really close if you look at it closely. Great stuff. Life and Naniwa entertained me more than I could ask for.

Maybe I'm missing something, but Didn't Scarlett say she had to take a break for her wrist to heal up some? Did that already happen? o_O

Community News: Xenocider wins IEF, where is Life wins IEM New York?
Not that I care about it too much, but I dislike that it's not spotlighted, I'm sure it'd be already there if Naniwa won.
Had a blast watching yesterday, Life's ling play and his swarmy play was a treat to watch.
Also agree with NarutO. All games where Life lost where games where I thought he would win, so a 4-0 would've been possible. Though Naniwa did play very well and Life allowed him to do great comebacks.

I feel that is a big misjudgement. It could have been very well 4-0 and we could see Life is way superior. BelShir he toyed around and lost, he could have won easily and on Whirlwind he won but he made it a lot closer with joking around with proxy hatcheries. I feel Life could close it out more easily.
But yeah, no bashing here, I am glad for Naniwa that he made it that far to begin with. Also glad for Life that he won his first title in a long time again

Came back a week or two ago and denied me LB points by advancing from her WCS group >:/

He made one proxy hatch on whirlwind, i dont think that makes any difference to the game. And why is his nydus play "joking" around? Its a very good strategy against what naniwa was doing. Remember also that Life did get lings in to Naniwas base in several games which could have been prevented by Naniwa had he had units blocking or ff. That would have changed alot aswell. So I dont entirely agree with you that Life was toying around with Naniwa.
