This is what it all comes down to. The defending Grand Prix Champion vs the former champion. Liquid`TaeJa vs. ST.Squirtle in a BO7 that will be a match you won't want to miss with $3500 in prizes up for grabs!
Liquid`TaeJa, fresh off his MLG Summer Arena 1st Place finish will be looking to become the first player to win not only two Grand Prix championships, but also take home two in a row and prove his supremacy over ESV TV events and in general. Showing next level Terran play, TaeJa is the King of the ESV TV events and every performance he puts on within it is a masterpiece.
ST.Squirtle is looking to also take his second championship and show that there is a reason he took 2nd place in two major events with GSL Code S and IPL 4. Considered one of the very best PvT players out there, he will be coming in looking to prove his Code S victory over TaeJa was no fluke, and he is the superior player.
Make sure and tune in as this will be one of the highest level all out PvT's you will have seen in a long time, with both players craving the win to show they are the top dog in ESV TV events, surely it will be one for the ages!
$3500 1st place - $1500 2nd Place - $800 3rd/4th Place - $400 5th-8th - $100

Day[9]
Squirtle is one of my prime models for PvT play (ie I steal tons of his play). He's brilliant at balanced defefense without sacrificing his economy. Taking MVP to game 7 is no simple feat, especially considering the varied styles MVP deployed. However, Taeja's hyperaggressive but consistent TvP has impressed more than any other player in the last three months. Even though I'd expect it to be a close series, I give Taeja the edge.
Root.TT1
Squirtle 4-2 or 4-1, because he knows how to play abusive.
Painuser
I think TaeJa is going to take it because he's on a roll and I love his play. He has amazing micro/macro and just looking like a beast right now. I think they key to winning though is going to be if he can hold off some of Squirtle's strong timings, like his 2 base colossus all-ins. 4-3 Taeja.
Frodan
I currently am playing Terran this season of ladder and, like thousands who endure similar frustrations, I have hit a wall where I severely struggle to ignore the stigmas of Z/P being stronger. This wall does not apply to Liquid`Taeja who just seems to break the rules of Terran. Ever since watching his replay pack from when he was first inducted into TL, Gretorp and I agreed -- this young'in is super special. His builds aren't the most efficient or fleshed out, but I believe his positional technique and control are on the level even greater than MarineKing. Taeja is one of the future stars for the Terran race.
That said, I believe Squirtle will win. Even though Squirtle did lose to Taeja recently in the IPL qualifiers, Squirtle manhandled Taeja last season in GSL on his road to the finals. If you watch PvT from Squirtle, his builds are brilliantly dynamic and flexible. Squirtle's biggest limitations are when he reads his opponents wrong or dives too quickly at an opportunity. I think with all the games Taeja showed at MLG, Squirtle has the scouting advantage and will give him the ability to read/prepare for his opponent. When Squirtle gets locked in, Taeja won't be able to win over a BO7.
Squirtle 4 - Taeja 3.
Desrow
Squirtle will win because he has been in the finals of an ESV before and because he should have won vs MVP if he had slightly more experience.
Wolf
I think TaeJa CAN do it. In this case, Squirtle is like a boss in a video game that he has to defeat. Sometimes you beat those bosses on the first try, sometimes you don't. Squirtle plays consistently, it seems, but TaeJa is bit more unpredictable. I don't mean to say he's sink or swim, but more like hit or sink.
Winning nine out of ten of his last Korean PvTs, Squirtle is no pushover. TaeJa shines in high-pressure situations, though, and if he brings victory, he will bring it 4-2.
Pokebunny
IMO this match will really depend on if TaeJa can bring his best and not get flustered. Squirtle isn't MC, but he's a diverse player with powerful and unique timing attacks, and we can pretty much expect him to bring a variety of things to the table. However, an on-point TaeJa is really one of the scariest things out there, and if he can shut down an allin or two early on I expect him to do very well. Given TaeJa's performances online / in ESV in particular, I expect him to show his best.
Liquid'TaeJa 4-2 ST_Squirtle
Ipp
Given proper preparation, I think Squirtle would crush Taeja 4-1 or even 4-0 but how do you prepare on maps that don't have games to study? These tournaments really showcase a players ingenuity, which in the past has allowed TaeJa to consistently bring his A Game. Squirtle is good, but a confident TaeJa is next to unbeatable in any match up and there is no reason for Taeja to have any doubts.
TaeJa will take this, 4-2; losing only on Cloud Kingdom and Golden Valley.
Btw added the "Pros Pick" to the OP, going to be bugging people all the way until the match so check it out from time to time for new quotes! Day[9] is even in there!

It will probably be a close series as many expect but in the end taeja will do it 4-3. Almost nobody understands the dynamics of a series like he does.
Well even though the time is hard for me I will certainly watch this, at least it is weekend and my last exam is on friday so nothing to worry about. I am predicting a 4-1 or 4-2 victory for Taeja, his TvP looks unbeatable.

This is probably going to be way better than the GSL finals. Too bad there won't be a crowd of 50k people on a beach to watch. On a side note, MLG needs some group like ESV to help them with their map pool.

TaeJa seemed last games vs Squirtle so much better than at the GSL ro8. Maybe the online factor is bigger than I thought, and in that case, I think TaeJa should win quite handily. TaeJa 4-2

Being able to rip off the right kind of stuff is a useful talent to have!
Will not be able to watch this live, but very much looking forward to seeing it tomorrow; really nervous for Taeja though. Squirtle is in my eyes the best Protoss and possibly the best player in the world, would be amazing to see my favorite Terran and the true king of ESV to triumph. <3

TaeJa made his name in the ESV events, Orb and Diamond are the TaeJa hipsters who said he was a top 5 Terran before Taeja went godmode, they love him. Everytime Orb casts him he talks about how insanely good Taeja is. And he is right.
absolutely insane play and contol by Taeja. i think as terran players are getting better and better, protoss wont be able to cope with them in the future.
But TLO.. protoss units get more from attack ( colossi get +2 to two attacks, zealots get +1 to two attacks, archons get like +3 per upgrades ) Marines get +1 and marauder get +2.
qxc made an article about that.. higher upgrades are better for protoss than terran.
Yesss 2-0, finish it off! That upgrade disadvantage had me worried.. I was screaming at him to start 3-3 and he did it instantly. I liked that 4th base timing too.

Doesn't matter, Terran has more DPS.
I don't know actually. I think the dps difference is smaller at 3-3 vs 3-0-3 than at 0-0 against 0-0-0

Well I worded that kinda badly. I think Taeja is like HerO, plays really really well online, shows flashes of incredible brilliance during LANs at times (DH, MLG), but can't seem to get the same results in the GSL booth. Then again, you have to look at the level of competition Taeja lost to the last two GSLs, Squirtle and MC are top-tier Protosses, both runner-ups their respective seasons. You typically don't see that during an ESV, sad to say.
Taeja is so good. He's not letting Squirtle get the army he wants or the attacks he wants. Taeja pretty much got to do whatever he wanted without any interference.

technically true, but terran will have waaaay more marauders/vikings etc (the better scaling units) than toss' better scaling units (colossus/archon). zealots scale just like marines and stalkers scale worse than marauders, and that will be the bulk of the army

and marines are 1 supply and have insane dps. zealots can be kited so they never even touch a bio ball. Bio ball 3 3 upgrades pretty much beat everything straight up (not including spells) Only saving grace for protoss and zerg is getting fungal off or storm (which is very very strong, dont get me wrong this isnt a balance whine or anything)
If your going to compare upgrades, compare cost (food and resources) and unit useability along with the actual damage increase

Not as simple as you make it. What matters is the percentage change in DPS (and since attack speed never changes, we can just use the % increase in dmg per attack).
Marines have a larger % increase than zealots (1/6 vs. 2/16) and way larger than colossi (4/30) and archons (4/35). They actually are one of the largest benificiaries from higher upgrades in the game.
Marauders, though, get screwed over (2/20) and have by far the worst % increase of any units other than stalkers.
This is part of why more marine-heavy compositions are more popular lategame amongst pros.
Also, P armor upgrades only affect 1/2 - 2/3 of unit HP. So there's that too.

Yes, at 0-0 clearly no race has an advantage. But for every +1 attack upgrade terran gets, they essentially get +1.5 benefit due to stim.

Not against chargelots with high templars in prism
Don't think it mattered - the army power was pretty close and Taeja still had his barracks and mules on his CC. Squirtle would have had to guard his Nexus, and by the time it would be up, Taeja would be pumping tons more marines and marauders.
Base exchange vs Terran is not a great move, typically.

Yeah, good point. Squirtle wouldn't have been able to move away from his buildings when Taeja has that many medivacs and Taeja had more infrastructure left. Even if Taeja couldn't win the fight straight up it would have been a fairly close match if Squirtle rebuilt his base.

CC-first, but build it at your third and pretend you are proxy-raxing, even send scv to behave like preparing for bunker rushing. Then, just build bunker at your natural and float the CC there. In this particular case, it was especially funny, because you could see how Squirtle was freaking out and searching for the hidden raxes around the map etc. Good fun. The end result was, the protoss was scared for a while, so he ended up expanding significantly later than the terran.
On July 29 2012 11:19 Sumahi wrote: Where is Squirtle's head in these games? I wonder if he has too many commitments or something.
Nothing wrong per se in the first two games to be honest, just that Taeja played unbelievably well in game one and rode his early'ish advantage very well in the second.
Pure Uniden moment in game three though. But professionals are human too, they can have grave slip ups.

doesn't mean anything in lategame, same level armor upgrade negates marine dps increase 100%. it only matters if you have an upgrade advantage over the toss' armor.
Marauders, though, get screwed over (2/20) and have by far the worst % increase of any units other than stalkers.
This is part of why more marine-heavy compositions are more popular lategame amongst pros.
Marauders get "screwed over" because every unit in the game gets +10% damage per upgrade but if 10% is 0.5 or higher it gets rounded up. immortals/ghosts/other units that have damage that can be divided by 10 are just as screwed over as marauders.
also upgrades have nothing to do with marine heavy compositions in lategame since level 3 armor upgrades negate marine scaling, and you get emp'd anyway. it's cuz marines' basic dps per supply/cost is way better than marauders', and because they can micro them so they don't die instantly (or they think they can).

That was way more one-sided than I expected. I thought Squirtle could at least put up a fight, but he seems lacking in PvT recently, or it is just the TaeJa factor.

Thank you so much for all of these tourney's that you put-on/organize, it's a real treat... whatever slight setbacks occur, I'm going to go off and subscribe now because ESV is so awesome overall...
Pretty sure the ESV Korean Weekly is the tournament I have felt the best about subscribing to, for a plethora of reasons. Good production, I mostly really do enjoy the casting, the maps are exciting to see and the talent pool is just...amazing.

So a couple quick q's
Is there a place for feedback for ESV, is there a vods resource aside from the twitch recorded videos?

No go on the website, in development right now. My personal email is pat[at]esvtv.com if you have anything that 160 chars does not cover.
Just watched the re-broadcast. Although I aboslutely love TaeJa and want him to win, Squirtle really wasn't playing his best there. Still, they were pretty exciting games, and another great acomplishment by TaeJa!

Yea, not cool. I get a feeling Orb's never played organized sports - you don't finger a teammate.
...well, other than maybe in women's lacrosse.
I played organized sports all through school. The one thing we always did was poke fun at each other and make jokes at each others' expense.
Lokgar is a hilarious dude, we poke fun at each other all the time.
I think you're reading into a joke a little bit too much
Fair enough, if that's the context.
Also, nice casting job today. The lost game also wasn't a huge deal, given the 4-1...and the fact that the game itself wasn't particularly spectacular.
While Terran QQs about sucking a fat one, Taeja just fucks shit up and wins tournaments. Hopefully he can add a TSL trophy to his shining record as well.
Taeja is so sick! He also seems to be like one of the guys, who put a lot of effort into the game...so be prepared zerg and protoss scum, he won´t get worse.
