Despite the terran success this season, I feel bad for their chances for season 3. Still, MVP may prove me wrong :p
|
HEROOOOOOOOOO! YOUR TURN BUDDY!
|
Can we please have a Protoss champion now?
I feel like this will be Zerg's season though. DRG, Symbol, Leenock, Sniper, Yugioh all qualified so far. Probably 1-2 more from up and downs. Stephano will get a Code S seed as well.
|
Lets wait for those scary Up and Downs first.
They look even more brutal than the players so far qualified for next Code S, LMAO

Predictions:
1. Very few Zergs. 2. About half-and-half Terrans and Protosses (and Terrans complaining about this). 3. Terran champion.
I make pretty safe predictions.

We have five so far, don't we? And potentially eight more o.O - six from UnD and 2 foreigner seeds. Although that's very unlikely, haha
|
why aLive is on "who to win s3" pool?
he is not even code S.
|
Hmm lets see...
Group A
Lure will be the punching bag of the group, no doubt here. NesTea will boss it up and crush through this, with only July possibly making the upset with some of his tricky strategys. Though there are less Terrans here, JYP will find trouble dealing with the Zergs, and ByuN.
Prediction:
NesTea and ByuN to advance
Group B
a nice and lucky group for aLive.
TvT against Fin and Maru should be safe, as well as his recently strong TvP to overrcome Puzzle. Bomber will be the hardest, and Curious could make an upset, but else hes likely to make it through, along either Bomber or Curious imo. Maru will find troubles in that group dealing with the TvT monsters aLive and Bomber.
Prediction:
aLive and Bomber to make it back to Code S.

Because he's looked weaker than the other players in his group for a couple months now? I don't know, his play hasn't looked the same as mid-2011 since the turn of 2012 in my opinion.

Can someone explain to me what exactly happens if you lose in the up and down matches? do you immediately drop down to code B?

If you get top 2 of your group in the up/down matches you go to Code S for the upcoming season, if you don't make top 2 you are in Code A next season. The only time you can drop to code B out of the gsl is round 1 of code A.

Yeah, I wouldn't consider him a contender for the title though. He is pretty terrible in the GSL format, because his style is so well studied and he has a history of... well... not really preparing much for particular matches. Also his ZvZ has been looking not that great lately.
Sad to say that if he and thorzain get the Code S seeds, I think they'll both be going out in the ro32. Naniwa has a chance of doing well again if he has continued to practice and improve though.

but seriously, it's more likely the other seed aside from Stephano would be:

MMA will return and advance! MMA and Ryung in same Round of 16 group! Both get out! Puzzle returns to his scary, ownage form and owns a bunch of Terrans and Zergs!
Top 8 will consist of 2 SlayerS players!

Random thoughts and predictions:
- MC will not get out of his up/down. He's good ofc to win code S, but I just don't feel like this will be his season and he seems to just randomly get owned by terran every now and then even though he's capable of beating the best. Also I think Seed will beat him in PvP.
- MVP will pick a terran for his ro32 opponent
- ro16: 3 zergs, ro8: 2 zergs, semis: 2 zerg, finals: 1 zerg. This one is reasonable. DRG and Nestea could both make it to the end. Symbol...maybe. Leenock and Curious, probably not past ro8. Rest, meh. Yugioh played well though recently, but no.
- Stephano will come 3rd in his ro32 group. He'll play well, but his group will be hard. Haters will hate, fanboys will defend, shit storms will ensue.
- Nestea vs Naniwa will happen at some point. Also Nestea will have to face Happy in a teamkill.
- Leenock out in ro32 (T_T). His ZvP is just too much of a problem now that protoss is going strong in code S. Most likely of these predictions sadly.
- Squirtle will fall in either the ro32 or ro16 group due to runner-up curse.
- MVP vs MMA at some point. MVP finally wins
- Symbol tops his group with unique play in ro32 but falls in the ro16 despite being really good. A protoss player is the one to end his run.
- Someone sets a personal best and makes it to the ro8.
- Byun ro8. Will be in group with another prime member at some point.
- Violet or Puma get last invite to code S
|
Watch out for Keen and Symbol this season!
DRG to take it all though.
|
HerO fighting ... get into final match for the second chance pls
|
So I'm thinking Stephano and Thorzain get seeds? I know that Violet's MLG win was more impressive, but let's face it: Having a Korean flag next to your name is a big liability for seeds. With both expressing intentions to travel to Korea, I'd say pretty solid guess, no?
With a potential 3 foreigners in Code S, this could be the season with the most foreigners in Code S in Code S history, though the effect is dulled by the fact that all three were given seeds in :|
|
I really don't think violet will get the seed, or just use it, as stephano did 1 or 2 season ago. Didn't he left korea to play in other tournaments than GSL ? His skill increased for sure, so maybe what I'm saying is completly wrong

Uhh is Stephano not taking the Code S seed for S3 anymore?
When can we expect you in Korea? BlinG said he will be going with you as well.
It should be around August, but nothing is for sure, but probably the beginning of August for one month.
That's way too late.

I'd love to see MKP put a real focus on GSL this season. He's been the best player in the world for the past few months and I felt like Season 2 was his season to finally get the monkey off his back. But he shot himself in the foot by attending an MLG event so close to round 16 (I have no doubt he would have advanced if he stayed in Korea).
If Parting can avoid zergs again, he's my favourite to win the whole thing. I'd love see Oz do well and not bring out a bunch of whacky builds in big games at the latter end of the tournament. Also excited to see if the zerg resurgance can carry on beyond Code A and into Code S.
MKP v Parting would be the dream final for me, with MKP taking it.

Hopefully the schedule works out a bit better for MKP this time, and he does attend (and win) MLG Winter Champs (i.e. I hope his group for GSL Ro32 is in the second week so less jetlag). He can skip HSC and DHS, I don't really mind, but would love to see MLG Bonjwa back. Apart from GSTL, there shouldn't be too many other events that MKP would want to go to I think.

So far, of the players that failed to get into Code S, most happy that July and Puzzle failed in their up & downs!
Never a fan of their gimmicky allin playstyle.

MKP should stop attending foreign events and focus 100% on practice. He's won foreign tournaments and lots of money, but what he still needs is that GSL title. His fans would be upset probably but imo it's best for his career.
Like another poster mentioned he shot himself in the foot going to MLG right before his ro16 games, that was not smart. He sacrificed a potential GSL championship and 44,550$ to try to win an 8 man invitational only worth 5000$ for 1st.
Fortunately I think him or his coaches/managers are starting to realize this. He skipped Spring Arena 2 in favor of preparing for GSL.

He's been the best player in the world for the past few months and I felt like Season 2 was his season to finally get the monkey off his back. But he shot himself in the foot by attending an MLG event so close to round 16 (I have no doubt he would have advanced if he stayed in Korea).
He sacrificed a potential GSL championship and 44,550$ to try to win an 8 man invitational only worth 5000$ for 1st.
he was also playing for a group seed in MLG winter champs, which has a significant prize pool that he can definitely get. if he didn't go to that invitational, he'd've had a much harder road and would have needed to go to spring arena 2 to qualify for that.
But yes, I hope he wins Winter Champs if he goes and stays in korea and wins the GSL :D winter champs shouldn't interfere with his GSL at all if he's in the second batch of groups, which is why I hope he's in that bunch.

I like a lot of the players there though. My other faves are Jumanji, MC and Polt, so really hoping they make it through U/D.
Would really like to see any of the prime players do well though. Always liked Byun and the young talent time duo.

I'm surprised so many people want Mvp to win again, he's my favorite player but I would rather someone else gets the chance to become champion. I was cheering against everyone in favor of Mvp last season because I really wanted him to win another gsl considering it had been so long, but now that he has it ( and 4 titles total I mean what the fuck how good are you to have 4 gsl's ) It's time for someone new.
my top 5 to win: 1. Parting 2. Maru 3. Hero 4. Symbol 5. Leenock

I think DRG will win again. Oh my, the queen buff.

Honestly, not sure if Parting can avoid Zs since so many Zs have already qualified for Code S. It is likely we will have one of the most balanced seasons in Code S in terms of race. So I think the winner will be someone who does not have a glaringly weak matchup (not saying Parting is bad vZ, just haven't seen it yet).

Yeah..no
He remains one of the most consistent players in the gsl ever since he rolled the 2nd open season. Got 3rd in two major foreign tournaments recently, won the Korean MLG qualifier for the Winter Arena (the last three being especially noteworthy since everyone thought he was only good with prep time...) and can still take on the best of each race.
He could definitely still win a gsl title if not dominate the season.

Yeah, though Nestea is probably no longer the number one zerg in place of DRG, he's probably a tie for number 2 with Leenock. Ahhh, if Leenock had Nestea's ZvP or Nestea had Leenock's ZvT they'd be unstoppable.
Like DRG should be, except he won a championship. Winning a championship means you don't perform the next season. Unless you're MVP in which case you just become the runner up the next season.

So lucky he is the only player ever to win a GSL without dropping a single map? So lucky he's also the only player to be in Code S every single season? I'm not even a Nestea fan, but this is a ridiculous statement.

There's so many good players that about 15-20 players are capable of winning if they hit a hot streak.
So because of that I voted for the guy I want to win most -- Nestea.
Violet and Stephano should get the seeds.

By the way, the different-colored guys in T2 and T3 are those who could slide down a tier if the U&D guys with more points than them make it to Code S tonight. Curious and Ganzi seem to have the most to gain from an upset result.

Cool, thanks for doing that. It's nice to look at and make theories of.
I think MVP will pick a zerg, he does like doing that. Probably Line or Sniper.
Squirtle could pick almost any of the lower tier. Given his recent PvP run I expect he'll choose a Protoss. Creator or Seed maybe.
Depends on the 2 seeds as well though.

B4 will be safe from the finalists' picks if he makes it, as MMA/MKP couldn't both push him down into Tier 4 (at least one would be out). It's kind of a strange spot in the standings; while Seed has more points than B4 and is already in Code S, he would be knocked into Tier 4 if MKP&MMA advance.

Wait.. doesn't see have more points than B4? This means that if MMA or MKP advance, B4 is tier 4, because he needs to climb 2 spots out of the danger zone.

Looks goof but I have a few suggestions. 1: Remove the race and nationality tab instead put them in front of the player. 2: Make the team tab smaller it's needlessly large now. 3: Same goes for the rankings tab. (1-58)

The way I have it listed, the "danger zone" guys are already in the higher of their two possible tiers, so it's not a matter of them climbing, but rather it's them avoiding a fall to the lower tier (from the higher U&D players advancing). So for example, if it's MKP&B4 advancing, Ganzi would fall to Tier 3 and Sniper to Tier 4, but Curious and Seed would stay in Tiers 2 and 3, respectively.
I guess it's more of a "vulnerable zone"...

So who does everyone think the 2 seeds will be? Stephano has confirmed he won't be going to Korea until August so that rules him out. Puma has already stated he's focusing on the qualifiers so he won't be getting one.
Huk got upset and threw a tantrum on Twitter when Naniwa got his last season, maybe GOM will give Huk a seed this season? He's not going to the qualifiers so it'd make sense. Not sure who else though. Maybe Sase? Also not going to be at the qualifiers, and he usually does try to qualify.

HuK had a chance with his up/down seed but he fell out of the gsl again in the same season, although he did get close to making it to code S through up/down. So maybe put him in there.
Violet if he would take it would be cool, but I don't think Violet wants to go to Korea.

I highly doubt HuK will get one to be honest :S ThorZaIN probably is getting one (he's going to Korea after MLG, which is when Code S starts) and the other one hrmmm I would like to see a korean playoff for that, maybe? haha

Oh did Thorzain confirm he was going to Korea right after MLG? If so then yea, probably a lock for one.

Yep. (I just updated my table!) I'm quite interested in who these seeds will be, since apparently Stephano has conflicts with other tournaments and won't be ready yet (he'll be going to both Dreamhack and MLG), I haven't heard anything about Thorzain's or Violet's status lately, and pretty much all the other plausible Korean candidates are already in Code A (so it's not as simple as the Polt situation last season).
Edit: I missed that you missed (and then added) Ace, and the seed discussion took off without me!

NaNiwa, Stephano and ThorZaIN would be a pretty sweet foreign contingent in GSL Code S

He's looked amazing it's true but he hasn't actually won a tournament yet.
Aside from Jjakji's win, Code S is almost always won by either a previous champion or a guy who's already won major tournaments in the foreign scene.
There's a lot to be said for guys who just know how to win best of 5/7 series against other top players.

MMA.
Won Iron Squid, 4th at IPL, 3rd at IEM World Championship since the start of Season 2.
Alive
Won IPL, 4th at Iron Squid.
They will probably seed MMA. Polt set the precedent for former GSL champions getting a one time free pass back into Code S as long as they do well enough in foreign tournaments to justify the seed.
I'm sure if DRG or Nestea or whatever dropped out and didn't get back into Code S they would do the same thing.
The 2 seeds are all about generating views and ratings and having former champions in Code S is always a good thing.

Stephano isn't coming to Korea until August:
http://esfiworld.com/news/stephano-train-eg-lair-prep-battlegrounds
It should be around August, but nothing is for sure, but probably the beginning of August for one month.
So I guess you can pencil him in for a seed in Season 4 (though the GSL lasts longer than one month)...

Really hope for Squirtle vs. DRG finals this season. That would actually be really hard for me to cheer for one over the other, I like them both way too much and I don't want to see either get yet another 2nd place finish. >_< But that would likely make it all the more exciting and they are definitely a great match for eachother.

But yea, MMA just got 0-3'd out of Up and Downs right after losing in Code A. It'd be pretty hard to justify giving him a seed. Alive didn't do much better.

Nono, I meant that someone at Redbull probably already has a seed, which is why they're at Redbull instead of the qualifiers. Thorzain would be one. And I could see either Huk or Sase as the other.

Well, Khaldor said he got a seed. It could totally mean an Up-Down seed.
Of course, if it's actually a Code S seed GSL are shooting themselves in the foot I think. No offence to Nightend, but he hasn't proven to be Code S, so if I see this choice I'll be flabbergasted.

Impossible for NightEnD to get a Code A seed now, there's already 40 players (from U&D, Qualifiers & EWM) and 8 left for Ro32 Code S players to drop down.
Either he's getting a Code S seed or (rumored that) he's going home and not participating in the GSL at all.

Likely within the week. They have to do the group draw too, and they've usually done that at least a week in advance of Ro32 so that players can prepare (and they might need to shuffle the group timing again because of Anaheim).

Code S seeds are decided before Code A qualifiers, I believe. Players gotta know if they've got a seed or not, so they don't have to participate in the qualifiers (NaNiwa didn't play in the qualifier because he knew of his seed).
One thing they could do, is invite Code A players (MMA, aLive etc.) to Code S and then replace their spots with some Code A seeds (NightEnD, SaSe, HuK etc.)... but that's kinda desperate.
|
I still don't understand why people keep listing Stephano as codeS seed.
He's attending both MLG Championship and DH Summer in the 2 weeks where all the RO32 groups are played, and he's going to Korea just in August for a single month, he won't be competing for the GSL ,ever.

Not in Korea. He's not been above 80% in TvP at all before June this year.
In fact, MKP is doing BETTER in TvP in Korea than he was at the start of the year (now and his best streak before now in 2012).

I'd say that it definitely has pretty good competition, but there are several players of a significantly lower standard (Tod, Sage, SaSe, Socke, Tiger and Huk) who, while all really good - especially SaSe and Socke with their recents streaks - are not Code S players at the moment, and are not up to the challenge of taking on the likes of MKP.
Perhaps it is uncharitable of me, but out of curiosity I removed these "lesser" players from the statistics and found that he ends up, from the page you sent me, at 18-4 rather than 30-4, an 82% winrate rather than an 88% winrate. It's still higher than the 80% bar, but I would contend that the format of foreign tournaments (playing many games all at once) compared to GSL (preparation for specific matches) favours MKP a lot, much like GSTL compared to GSL. I reckon that had he been playing these opponents in GSL, especially Parting who deliberately avoided playing MKP in a straight up game one MLG Arena, the percentage would still be high.
I would also contend that with that small a sample size it is not really fair to imply that him dropping "a lot of games against Protoss" is indicative of anything in particular. Not including the data from the most recent MLG (coz it ain't up yet) ee still has an overall 17-3 series record against Protoss this year Internationally, and one of those losses was to Vines in a Bo1. The only other series he lost were to MC and Squirtle, two of the best Protoss players in the world. It's not as if he's dropping series all over the place.

I'm probably going to try to give Terrans a month or two to try to adapt to the current meta game post patch, since it is always better for the players to change the meta game rather than Blizzard. Still, there is no denying that Terran is having a lot of trouble right now.

This group should be so sick i'm more hyped for the next one (symbol, parting, yugioh and mkp) rather than today's hrmmm someone maek LR? :D Yeah tomorrow will be great, really have no clue what will happen in that group. But today I am just really excited to see DRGjr. play and also interested in seeing what MC has in store for PvT. i think of munster more like DRG jr than sniper though haha
Before I knew that Sniper was KillerMvP on ladder I always assumed that he was DRG and Sniper is closer in skill to DRG too. Monster has never given me the same vibes as either of these 2 and he usually plays a little differently iirc.

Oh my god you gotta be shitting me.
Two of my favorite players MMA and HongUn have to play in Ro48 Code A? Omfg =/
Well sorry MMA but I'll have to cheer for HongUn, as if he gets knocked out now it might be the last we see of him. And if he won't return to GSL regardless if he loses or wins Ro48, then I'd like to see him go as far as possible before getting knocked out.
i would be happy to help with the LRs but I can't stay up so... XD

I will be in Seoul both 4th and 5th july. I was extremely happy to learn that the GSL Code S round of 8 will play then.
Will the event take place in or close to Seoul? Where can I see which day Naniwa will play, or has that not been decided yet?
I have found this, but no additional information: http://www.gomtv.net/schedule/index.gom?year=2012&month=7&date=4&leagueid=0
Hopefully you will see me and my friend in the audience, cheering for our fellow swede :D

MVP mentioned that it would be fun to face MarineKing again but I doubt he would pick him, he would definitely prefer a TvT though and Keen TvT can be quite wacky, so I believe he would go with Supernova whose style seems more stable.
DRG would want a Terran but probably not MKP, and its probably hard to really tell how good Byun is atm so Keen is probably his pick.
Would Genius reignite his NaNiwa rivalry? I think so! He's got a point to prove and I think he would prove it here!
Not too sure who Squirtle would pick, but again, probably a Terran. So if Taeja or Ryung goes through tomorrow its gonna be one of them, otherwise I think Violet.

Genius 4-0d nani in NASL sunday showdown afaik. If that speaks for or against him picking Naniwa I don't know, but it speaks against him having a point to prove.

DRG and Keen are teammates, so I wouldn't expect that. Also nowadays I think he's more comfortable against Protoss, and I would guess that he'd pick Naniwa if MVP doesn't.

Every Zerg is more confident in ZvT than ZvP right now, DRG will pick a Terran for sure.

Yes, I wouldn't be surprised if DRG did pick Naniwa since Naniwa's vZ is still suspect. Of course, DRG's vT is strong as well.
MKP and Symbol (and maybe Nestea) will probably be the last 2/3 picks unless MC/Naniwa/Genius does something crazy.
|
Mvp -> Seed or Nestea DRG -> Keen Squirtle -> Naniwa for wacky teamkill games
But I imagine Mvp, DRG and Genius will want vT and Squirtle picking PvP.
Mvp -> Keen DRG -> Byun Genius -> Naniwa Squirtle -> Seed or MKP

GSTL would be a good idea too, if I can figure out how to add it in without cluttering up the calendar too much. Last season that was most people's complaint (that i had too much stuff going on, and they were right)
thanks for the response!

Ohh I see where I messed up. The days are +1 what they should be... doh.. thanks for catching that

It was recently announced that the top 10 in the GSL point ranking, incuding Season 3, will be seeded directly into the WCS Korea National Qualifer tournament next month (along with six KeSPA seeds), skipping the offline preliminaries that will be held on July 22-23.
Current GSL Points ranking: http://wiki.teamliquid.net/starcraft2/User:Jobber123rd/GSL_Rankings (My edits to GOMTV Global Starcraft II League/Rankings page haven't been checked yet, so it's a little behind.)
Based on that, here is the Nationals placement situation:
- With his win over Symbol, Seed clinched a
seed place in the Nationals.
- MC was already in prior to his Ro8 match (he was in 7th, and with the DRG/NaNiwa match being completely irrelevant to his position, only three Koreans could have passed him in the ranking). He's now in 5th.
- Also already qualified are Mvp, DongRaeGu, Genius, Squirtle, PartinG, and HerO.
- With MC's Ro8 win, Gumiho clinched a seed in the Nationals as well.
That's a total of 9 players qualified for the Nationals. Though he lost to MC, Taeja is still #10 in the rankings. If he can stay there, he can attend MLG Summer Arena and be in the Nationals. However, it's not all that likely. The scenario for the final spot is as follows:
- Nestea clinches the seed with a win over Byun.
- Byun clinches the seed if he reaches the finals (just beating NesTea would leave him one point short).
- aLive clinches the seed if he beats GanZi in COde A Ro32, Byun beats NesTea in Code S Ro8, and Byun loses to Seed in the Code S semifinals.
- Taeja clinches the seed if Byun beats NesTea, Byun loses to Seed, and aLive loses to GanZi.
The above assumes that all Season 3 results prior to the qualifier will be counted; if next week's results are ignored, then it's simply NesTea or Taeja, depending on the outcome of the NesTea/Byun match.

I'm fairly sure Byun is gonna win it all. He's the last Terran in it, he HAS TO WIN IT. Come on, man. Don't let a Protoss or Zerg win this ;_;

Yeah, IDK why I still thought that the Ro8 winners from the same day played each other. Thanks for reading and correcting.

I think that historically they have, but one of the players from the second half needed to be overseas, so GSL changed things up a bit.

DRG takes over the #1 spot in the rankings, and will retain it at the end of the season unless MC wins the championship.
TaeJa is still #10 with 1684 points (good enough for the last WCS South Korea seed), but two players can overtake him next week.
- aLive is 36 points behind TaeJa, and can gain 41 points by beating GanZi.
- Byun is one point behind TaeJa, and can gain 999 points by beating Seed.
