What is the EWM?
The (Wiki)EWM is a weekly online tournament with 64 players. The winners will each advance into an offline tournament, and the winner of that finals will receive the Code A seed. In 2012, the EWM is expected to provide 1 seed for every season of Code A in the GSL.

The 64 players will be chosen on a first-come, first-serve basis (following certain qualification tiers). To qualify, a player must be above 500 rating in Masters league on the Korean server. However, players that are part of a team, domestic or foreign, are eligible to particpate regardless of rank and are given first priority to particpate.

The format is best of 3 for every round, and the map order is Daybreak, Dual Sight, and Antiga Shipyard.

Whether you're looking to keep up with your favorite players outside the GSL, or keeping tabs on new recruits for your favorite team, the EWM is here to provide additional exciting content with an incredibly valuable prize on the line!

When is it?
The EWM will begin it's first week broadcast on TwitchTV starting on Monday, Feb 06 5:00pm GMT (GMT+00:00). Our week will begin broadcasting with the fabulous casting crew over at IMBAtv, and broadcast through the week. Be sure to tune in to as many matches as possible, there are sure to be a ton of amazing games!

Hey a few quick questions:
  • This year 5 GSL´s are planed? That would mean 2 month ~ per season (first season
    Start Date: 2012-01-09
    End Date: 2012-03-03
    from http://wiki.teamliquid.net/starcraft2/2012_Global_StarCraft_II_League_Season_1
  • Would that mean 8 weekly tourneys with a 64man lineup?
And a Ro8 final for the Code A spot?
  • Are players allowed to play in the EMW if they have Code A/S spot?
  • Are they allowed if they have already a place in the final?
  • From Liquipedia,
Events will be broadcast by TotalBiscuit, Apollo, MrBitter and RotterdaM.[1]
while here you say the Imba crew cast the games. Is it rotating, do the others have no time, is it a complete change?
  • Should I post these questions in the announcement thread?

It´s nice to see more Korean tourneys, but to be honest (if I´m right above) 8 64man tourneys with 1 Code A seed and nothing else on the line could be a bit lackluster. Not saying that it will be! I´m very curious how it plays out.

Thanks for the tourney and the coverage, this post really should not be negative in any way. I´m just a bit concerned.

Hey, I'm a little busy at the moment and can't get to these questions right now, but I'll get you a response ASAP.

Just so you guys are aware, we're going to be switching off the PlayhemTV stream just before 1PM EST because they'll be streaming the EU Playhem daily. Hopefully we can find a workaround before then.

No need to rush, I´m sure you have many things to do, especially with the steam hickup. Good luck with everything. First time I listen to PlayhemTV, I think. I like it I must say.
PS: The overall player list looks absolute amazing!

Edit: Just noticed it´s Katu on the Playhem stream, should have recognized his voice after all the KSL...

Thanks, Virgil. No worries. I'm excited to see some high quality games, so if this is the worst thing that happens on day 1, I think that's a pretty good start, honestly

I'll edit the stream link into the OP, but it's live on the right on the calendar.

We've got our casters for today all set up, and hopefully goes smoothly from here.

Just a suggestion but I think the caster could tone down his ummmm "oh my", "indeed", "I must say".... Seems very over the top and takes away from the action of the game.

"Just"? You should realize that this is a great chance for little effort for young b-teamers to prove theirself, make their self a name and possibly win a GSL spot.

Code A spots are worth a lot to the koreans, plus you do get paid for being in the GSL even in the first round of Code A.

When you are a Korean B-teamer, a Code A spot is synonymous with exposure, and exposure is synonymous with success.

A cash price would be icing on the cake, but a Code A spot makes for a pretty damn tasty cake regardless.

@SeaSwift, Tarotis, Dodgin

Unless I'm terribly mistaken the ESV weekly also offered a way to get a Code A spot, and get a cash prize.

If I won a 64 man tourney with the talent in EWM Week #1 and then came second in the eight... sixteen? man tourney that follows... I'd want something.

Assuming the offline qualifier is also single elim brakcet play with bo3s and has eight people who won the eight weeklies before it then you could win eight best of threes in a row, lose the final 2-1 (You could even go 17-2 in terms of games in the tourneys) and leave empty handed. Which is a bit poor considering all the people involved in it that aren't players no doubt get some cash out of it.

True. However, what have you lost? Directly, nothing. You've got to play on a stream with ~2000 viewers, you've gained experience, you might have made a bit of a name for yourself.

I guess what I'm going for is that while the ESV was probably a better deal, that doesn't make this tourney bad. For B-team Koreans flying below the radar, this is great.

First day of the competition existing, very little hype before it started it just basically... appeared.

Emergency casters and not more "recognised" names.

Broadcasting in a prime EU time slot and of five potential games involving EU players they only show one.

IPL rebroadcast and KSLs not involving european players usually got ~4k viewers, so I suppose that time and partecipants are not really a problem here.

Really it just comes down to who is casting the event, compare KSL with Khaldor casting to when he does not cast. It's 7-8k viewers to 2k or so. Let's face it casters are the biggest stars of SC2 right now and viewer numbers mostly depend on them.
Apollo + TLO casting the Scan invitational got near 30k viewers and that was a one day tournament with EU players.

To expand on my first two points

First day of the competition existing, very little hype before it started it just basically... appeared.

Emergency casters and not more "recognised" names.

These really are major points, if it's the first day of your tournament existing and broadcasting you want it announced a while in advance. SXSW Show Match is announced like two months in advance, Iron Squid a month in advance. ESW make a LR thread 30 minutes before their stream goes up and a reddit post three hours before it starts, I did a quick TL search to see a post three days ago about week #1 (not about the tournament in general) that gets less than a page of comments. And a search by title and content reveals a TL staff member posting a translation from a korean website about the league a week ago with info edited in after Virgil said some more about it.

Finally, when Day 1 of your tournament starts up you want your prime casters ready to go on week 1, day 1. I know Bitterdam are off getting ready for IEM Sao Paulo so in this case for day 1 you want to make sure 100% that it's going to be casted by TB + Apollo.

I hope this tournament goes well and all, and I'm sure it will. But day 1 should have been explosions and fireworks, trumpets and fanfare not, oh look there's some new online cup starting.

EDIT:

I moaned a bit about prize money earlier and by reading to the bottom of the twitch.tv blog (http://blog.twitch.tv/2012/02/06/gomtv-and-twitchtv-partner-with-the-ewm/) which was linked on r/starcraft but is now no longer even on the first page and also seems to be very poorly written / mis translated I find:

Weekly
- $100 prize money

Finals : 8 Player offline tournement from past weekly match winners
- Winner receives Code A certified spot.
- $500 prize money

When I check the LR thread and relevant liquipedia article I generally expect to find all the info there.

I don't currently have time to go into detail about what happened with the casting situation, but both pairs of casters are currently otherwise engaged.

That announcement that was made had some information in it that wasn't confirmed yet, and on top of that, the casters we did have for this week were not here on time.

I had planned (and written) a nice fancy announcement post, but someone got there before I could, and things went downhill from there.

Luckily we were able to sort everything out this afternoon fairly quickly, so big thanks to Katu and the SCVRush guys for being available on such short notice.

Virgil you've done a great job holding this together. This casting duo is okay. Could work on game knowledge a bit instead of just talking about what buildings and units are being built

I'm nitpicking though.

More importantly, is there any way to get an expected list of games for the day? In order, preferably.

Today, because of all the chaos at the beginning, I didn't have time to arrange a schedule, so I just packaged up half of the Ro64 replays, and we've just been going through them. In the future we'll have a list of the series in order.

After this one we're going to cast the SaSe vs Dream games though.

For an update on the Cutter games:

I did not receive a replay from Cutter vs NalZa Game 3 and have been informed that Cutter was unable to play the 3rd game as was forced to forfeit the series to NalZa. NalZa advances 2:1.

Thanks man. That's the series I really want to see. Long day and I'm fading fast but I cannot miss that series.

While you're taking questions Virgil, how will vods be done for this tournament in general?

Is someone condensing them into a ewm channel or just using the respective twitch accounts for the casting teams?

I dunno if its all about the casters. The ESV events always have some 4-5k viewers and their casters are imo also not very well known...

ESV has been around for about 8 months though. They struggled early to get viewers but, its grown steadily since then.

You should be able to catch the VoDs on the Twitch Channel after the broadcast.

I'm also looking into an alternative to get the VoDs to YouTube, more info on that Soon(TM)

When will PuMa's game come up, Virgil? If you could get PuMa vs Symbol going next, that would be super swell ^^;

I have PuMa vs Symbol slated for tomorrow's broadcast, so we'll see that one tomorrow for sure.
