I hope that you mean 80k Danish krones (=14k $). If not, then I move to Denmark. Good tournament and congrats Stephano! i looked it up, minimal wage is like 3,5k euros from people of my country, that's good but not 80k per year (and minimal wage for the danish is actually lower than for foreigners) 3500β¬ .. per month? with no education? that's european euros, right? how much does a small flat costs there and how long do you need to get me one? 3500 per month? You have got to be kidding me... that's a way the government tries to keep foreigners from taking jobs, by forcing the employers to pay more for foreigners. it actually even depends on your home country at the company i know about. so they only employ you if they really need you. or i don't know what you were implying, is it too little for you?
That sounds like a smart thing actually and possibly allow the more labor intensive jobs to be done by students doing it part-time. But yeah I was shocked to hear 3500, but as you said you still need to reduce that amount with taxes and it all adds up! My statement was basically out of shock

At this time, we're pleased to report that all players who have participated in the SHOUTcraft Invitational #4 have been paid their tournament winnings. The only exception would be the one player who has requested a bank transfer.

Yes this! Its about having something to fall back on if things don't work out as you'd hoped (which happens to most people in a field like pro-gaming). Now becoming a doctor is a pretty mammoth fall-back plan but probably requires too much investment to ever have a hope of coming back to gaming.
Players who just game and have no fall-back plan are the Starcraft equivilent of 1 basers, things might work out for them for a while, but eventually they're going to run out of steam unless they expand and they just need to hope they don't expand too late.
Players who continue studying while they play, like qxc, are like 2 rax or 3 gate sentry expand, they're set up to move out and put some pressure on, but they're going to expand at the same time so if things don't go well they can pull back and defend their economic advantage.
Getting a medical degree is like going forge fast expand except you build 5 Nexuses and 9 million cannons. Sure you're safe and have a nice economy, but you're never going to move out ever.

Some people care about money, some people don't. Personally, I'd rather make 30k a year with immvp's life than 600k as a doctor. As a a pro gamer, I'd be doing what I absolutely love, instead of putting a dollar amount on my life's validation.

The govt will crack down on doctors here in furtue and insurance companies already are that have many leaving the feild espcially rural or general practice.
I'm 19 with perfect GPA and going for accounting then MBA - no way I'd get into medicine let alone in EU. to many hours to many years for to little renewmeration.

It's not hard to see why someone would want to become a doctor. If it was a lawyer, then maybe the "it's about the money" argument could happen, but a doctor is saving lives and working long, long hours.
what do other player ask for? cash?
Some players don't have or prefer not to use Paypal, so we wire them the money, which takes a couple of days.

It's not just tournament winnings there is also sponsorship money that players/teams get
However in my opinion stephano is making the perfect decision and frankly i wish i was in his position i would do the exact same. The lifespan of starcraft is an uncertainty. It may last 50 years it may last 5. Your level of competativeness in starcraft is an uncertainty. Whos to say that HOTS comes out and stephano could be terrible. Having a safety net to fall back on can be the difference between homelessness and a comfortable life.

well i guess people who wanna be doctors have a lot of commitment, they aren't doing it purely for money. it's one of the most respected/etc professions by nature- you dedicate yourself to heal. also lot of people are into science and stuff

source is written in hungarian. it's basically 18-20k crones for hungarians (i think with degree)- that's around 3,5k euros or a little less. probably around 2k with taxes reduced.
