I'm pretty sure the viewership for SCi4 was bigger than the previous ones so I don't know why this happened. The players themselves got lots of tips so money doesn't seem to be an issue. Maybe TB should have pitched for more donations during the cast. I guess this means the prize pool will be lower next time around.
Nah, $3800 is actually more $1400 more than we got last time. This tournament isn't just donations, I give all my stream revenue to it so that more than covers the prizepool. We're not going any lower than $5k unless something dramatic happens to stop me. With the streaming I've done over the course of the month, we cover the $5k no problem.
Being a pro in any sport is almost never sustainable for a lifetime. I know of a few former Pro NFL players that aren't doing so hot right now - they we're making 300-500K a year, only to have it dry up later in their life when they are no longer pros.
Add to the fact that a SC2 pro makes considerably less than that, and it is unknown if being a professional in this sport is something one can do for the next ten years (let alone a lifetime) then realistically speaking its smart for Stephano to plan for school.
However, he's young. He can be stupid. And in my opion it is incrediably stupid to waste a potential talent.
This was a great little tournament with some really good games.
The only criticism I have is that the observer (I assume TotalBiscuit) is, frankly, awful. Constantly misses drops, runbys, expansions etc. because they're too busy focusing on something else. For the next tournament, it'd be nice if we could get either a dedicated observer, or just another caster to observe (preferably someone who is Masters or above as they're more used to paying attention to the minimap).
Still, thanks for the tournament. It was very fun to watch.

We barely missed anything and I've been practicing my observing a ton so I find this rather insulting and downheartening.

I think you've improved a lot. Actually, I figured it was Apollo doing the observing.

I thought the observing was fine, from what I saw. There were a couple missed drops that happened, but most of them occurred while a larger battle was happening. This was a great tournament. Thanks for running it!
Stephano is making the smart choice by going to school, but i wish he could continue SC2 parttime.
To the people debating in this thread, instead of looking at the absolutes of either 100% school or 100% sc2, why not look at the viability of holding a parttime job, say 20 to 30 hours a week in addition to gaming? Would that be viable? Or too much to handle?

Go and watch Thorzain vs Ret (I think it was Ret anyway, definitely a Zerg) on Daybreak. You miss several engagements, drops, etc. (if it's the game I'm thinking of anyway) whilst you watch this big battle in the middle when, really, that's not the main focus.
Another game, I think anyway, which I can't remember who played so I apologise, I noticed 2 hatches being sniped by drops whilst you focused on a hatchery being built.
I really don't want to be harsh. It's really nice that you've been practising and, honestly, it shows. You've certainly improved a lot. It honestly only seems to happen when there's one big engagement going on whilst a lot of tiny things (drops, etc.) happen at the same time. Also, the worst observing moments seemed to happen towards the end of the first day so, to be fair, you were probably just tired and overworked.
I can understand that casting and observing at the same time can be hard (to say the least) but if you can't observe competently whilst casting then you shouldn't be observing, especially when you have someone with you who will probably be better.
I honestly don't mean anything rude by this. You're an entertaining caster, even if you do have your faults, and you obviously put your heart and soul into your work. And I personally really appreciate it. You're very dedicated and it's nice to see someone put so much effort into something (let alone the amount of money you personally contributed towards the prize pool). I just think you should stick to what you're good at (casting) and let someone else do the observing if you're not as good as them.
EDIT: Second game I was thinking of is Thorzain vs Stephano on Daybreak, I believe, from Day 1.
EDIT2: Thorzain vs Stephano on Antiga from Day 1, sorry.

or how bout just gaming in addition to being a doctor? It doesn't take that much time to practice, but I guess being a doctor would entail long hours

this. Your casting is very entertaining. But if possible, try to have someone else take care of the obs? That being said, you didn't miss that much. My criticism has more to do with "how to make this even better" than "it sucked!". Thanks for this awesome event!
A fantastic tournament, with two fantastic casters.
There will always be problems with observing, and so most people who complain about it have never tried to do it themselves. Sometimes people complain when watching the GSL when the observer focuses on what seems to be a random structure, when in truth they are showing you that an upgrade started, which will help you understand better how one player might then proceed to obliterate the other.

i think you really underestimate the hours you have to put in through med school and residency.
it's not unheard of for residents to do 70-80 hours a week while being paid peanuts. you won't have time to game on the side, let alone keep up a high enough level of gaming, when you're being worked like a dog through your residency.

Oh no, I was not referring speciifically to the occupation of doctor. But say another job, not 9-5 perhaps but maybe 4-6 hours a day? For example, Polt is still a student at the university, but he is still able to play SC2 at the highest levels. Most progamers need that fallback, as the occupation of progaming is very very volatile.
Total Biscuit is fantastic, what he does for the community and his tips idea is brilliant, ignore all the haters who give you shit about being a caster and what not, you're just trying to make a living, and you provide a lot of value to the community and we should be grateful for that. Thank you Total biscuit <3
Believe it or not, but in Brazil there is a player called "Levin" who used to be a progamer in WC3 times and now is like the third best in Brazil for SC2.. He always plays WOW too..
First time i catched your tournament, found it by chance while casually browsing TL. It had a great lineup and i enjoyed the games i watched alot. Looking around the forum i see that your a controversial character, but i personally really like your casting.

I echo this, but I think we've just been spoiled by the GSL observing. Objectively, the observing was quite good if not the best, I'd give it a solid B.

I feel comments like this must be what really ruins a caster's day, the typical "you get 100 positive remarks but then one critic ruins it all".
Yeah, I realize where you're coming from: The observer missed a few things, a runby here, a drop there. I'll give you that. But neither did TB miss stuff "constantly", nor was his general observing "awful". Please, really, work on your language. You can't say the that the tournament was very fun to watch and at the same time that the awful caster should be replaced by someone who actually knows the game next time. That's not feedback, even if you think it is; with this formulation, it's close to being an insult.
