No,its not.

He won more than 80k during 2011.

It`s not? Let me see ur argument.

80k $ isnt much income for a year if you have to make a living.
Thats almost what you can earn (at least in Denmark) from a job without education.

He won all that in last 3 months or so. Triple or quaddruple that for 2012 - does 320K seem like a lot?

He can't keep doing it, that's the problem. The best pro-gamers have their years, but within a decade they're out of the scene. Then it's coaching, casting, managing, etc. - none of which are lucrative careers compared to, say, being a doctor.

It's the same in professional sports, except that the pay there is a lot higher, and even then pro sports isn't seen as a stable career compared to being a doctor, programmer, etc. Hence the reason universities have scholarships and part-time programs for sports players - to make up for the opportunity cost of playing it.

how many people become doctors? that's not a great comparison. and lots of doctors/programmers get layed off because their employers dotn want to spend money. if you're a freelance worker, you make money on your own effort like he is right now.

Choosing between having a stable income and reliable future in contrast to going to tournaments in hopes of getting money in the pocket really is a difficult choice.

just depends on what kind of person you are. if you believe in yourself and have a real passion, you can take the riskier route.

I guess, I'm not really keen on taking risks regarding futures that aren't as clear as the other but I do admire people who can and take their passion to heights. So I can understand Stephano and people like him as well as Professionals like MVP, the Koreans and foreigners alike.

Guys while progaming may earn you more in the short term getting a career is better in the long run, especially considering that the industry is not as stable as many of us would like to believe.

In the end its a smart choice for Stephano. Also in europe the doctors are not paid as well as in the US no?

See for urself kid http://www.progamingtours.net/index.php?/eSport-Rankings.html

You call him kid, but you think its reasonable to assume that because a player can earn $80k in 3 months they will continue to be able to for the rest of their life. You know how many top Korean pros from 2002 are still relevent in 2012? Very few.

This isn't even factoring in that there is no pension plan for you so you'd either need to live off the state or put money into it yourself. A doctor can earn £100k+ per year, thats competitive money to even top BW players.

I hope that you mean 80k Danish krones (=14k $). If not, then I move to Denmark.

Good tournament and congrats Stephano!

i looked it up, minimal wage is like 3,5k euros from people of my country, that's good but not 80k per year (and minimal wage for the danish is actually lower than for foreigners)

He has a contract in a team. How does that make him more free lance than any doctor working in a hospital ? And many doctors have private studies or clinics if they're lucky, and those usually are the wealthy ones who earn more than any progamer (so far). Not many people become doctors but it's even worse with progamers I'm sure. Everybody needs doctors, not many people need to watch e-sport (and therefore spend money on it). And doctors don't get laid off so easily in France as far as I know. Not arguing for the sake of arguing but I don't understand your logic.

Another thing people are forgetting is not making a dime while going to school. aka opportunity cost. On the other hand if you can make bank at 17-18 save and invest it, yes you can be richer at 55 than even become a doctor at 28 because of the power of compounding.

And 95%+ of 'progamers' earned fuckall. There is no future in being a progamer, stop kidding yourself. I like being able to watch these pro's battle it out. But overall its very stupid to try and become a pro for 99% of people i'd say.

This doesn't mean anything, despite SC2 becoming bigger (which is obviously great), he cannot expect to earn $80,000 each year from tournament winnings. That is simply unrealistic, not everyone can win Code S and get the big fat $45,000 prize, heck if you cling on Ro32 of Code S every season for an entire year you earn $4,875 for an entire year... people need to remember that pros don't walk into tournaments with a guaranteed future.

What do you mean doing nothing? Can you extract economic rents from 50,000 people? They can hence pay.

Tbow can extract it from 100,000 in the stands and another 30,000,000 on TV hence his pay for just playing game.
