No,its not.

He won more than 80k during 2011.

It`s not? Let me see ur argument.

80k $ isnt much income for a year if you have to make a living.
Thats almost what you can earn (at least in Denmark) from a job without education.

I hope that you mean 80k Danish krones (=14k $). If not, then I move to Denmark.

Good tournament and congrats Stephano!

i looked it up, minimal wage is like 3,5k euros from people of my country, that's good but not 80k per year (and minimal wage for the danish is actually lower than for foreigners)

3500€ .. per month? with no education?

that's european euros, right?

how much does a small flat costs there and how long do you need to get me one?

It's nothing unusual, its just better to realize as soon as possible that you were wrong.<
I respect every pro gamer for their effort put into this game, else I wouldn't be here and watch them play.
But its just stupid to cry out at stephano and ask him to "be reasonable"LOL and quit school for pro gaming.

Thats the amount these players won since the last year. This does not include, for example, sponsorship, teams and streaming.

But I agree with Stephano`s decision.. But I wouldn`t bash him if he chooses SC2, thats it.

And 95%+ of 'progamers' earned fuckall. There is no future in being a progamer, stop kidding yourself. I like being able to watch these pro's battle it out. But overall its very stupid to try and become a pro for 99% of people i'd say.

Agreed. The same argument can be used for competitive sportsmen, they don't spend their entire life playing their sport and they have to retire sometime but they always have a backup plan (usually a degree). At the moment there are no backup plans for the time a progaming career is over and one certainly can't be playing SC2 for the rest of their lives...

He won all that in last 3 months or so. Triple or quaddruple that for 2012 - does 320K seem like a lot?

He can't keep doing it, that's the problem. The best pro-gamers have their years, but within a decade they're out of the scene. Then it's coaching, casting, managing, etc. - none of which are lucrative careers compared to, say, being a doctor.

It's the same in professional sports, except that the pay there is a lot higher, and even then pro sports isn't seen as a stable career compared to being a doctor, programmer, etc. Hence the reason universities have scholarships and part-time programs for sports players - to make up for the opportunity cost of playing it.

how many people become doctors? that's not a great comparison. and lots of doctors/programmers get layed off because their employers dotn want to spend money. if you're a freelance worker, you make money on your own effort like he is right now.

I'm looking at it from Stephano's point of view - for him, the decision to become a doctor exists, and he has to weigh that with staying a pro-gamer. Other people may have different choices.

On a side-note, it isn't that hard to become a doctor if you don't slack off in school. I mean, I understand people saying that it's not easy to get into a good career track, etc. But it really is just an opportunity cost that gets decided early in life, and not entirely by you, since your family and where you live has a lot to do with whether you go to a good school, stay out of trouble, and have the finances to support going to med school (without doing something like what Stephano is doing).

hehe i don't know what stuff costs in france but keep in mind that 3500 becomes like 2000 with taxes, and i read that stuff is expensive there (food/drink/flat is quite cheap in hungary)

there is a hostel there that is quite cheap and some hungarians live in that, i know that's cheap. but to rent a flat, that's quite expensive

People give Stephano way too little credit for his intelligence and obvious maturity. Many other people at that age would be abandoning their future career plans and going all-in on something like pro-gaming. Stephano knows it's a better idea to get an education and join one of the most respected professions in the world. He is smart, very smart and is exploiting his current success as much as he can to get a headstart in his career.

It reminds me of something my parents said to me before I left home, when I had some weird ideas about my career path. They said "get your degree, then you can do whatever you want". So I did and now I talk about videogames for a living. Stephano can get his degree then do whatever he wants, rather than squander his chance at a good education to pursue something that may not last and is even now, incredibly volatile and uncertain.

You can still earn 6 figures in the UK working as a doctor for the state and comparable amounts to US doctors if you work in private practice. I have to imagine that countries like France and Germany are very similar to the UK in this aspect.

that's a way the government tries to keep foreigners from taking jobs, by forcing the employers to pay more for foreigners. it actually even depends on your home country at the company i know about. so they only employ you if they really need you.

or i don't know what you were implying, is it too little for you?

So I'm a nurse myself so I know what Doctors are paid, what employment opportunities are and what the actual job takes. While MVP might earn more in a year than a Doctor does he sure as hell won't earn more in his lifetime (including in Europe). Not to mention that being a Doctor is a secure job which will always be in demand where you're making a positive contribution to society.

Doctors (especially junior Doctors) work extremely hard but they still don't do the 10 hours a day, 6 days a week than Sc2 gamers do. Stephano doesn't train as hard as some (although the 3 hours thing is a lie) but when Flash and Jaedong switch there's no chance of anyone succeeding in Sc2 without training 10 hours a day in a pro gaming house with minimal personal space and privacy.

There's no question that if he wants to be and has the qualifications and drive to make it as a Doctor that he should do it.

You can still earn 6 figures in the UK working as a doctor for the state and comparable amounts to US doctors if you work in private practice. I have to imagine that countries like France and Germany are very similar to the UK in this aspect.

You don't earn 6 figures as a Doctor in the UK without doing locum work or working for Bupa on the side. Consultants get 80-90k based on years served and SHO's/Registrars and House Officers (more junior Doctors) earn a lot less than that.
