If SC now is where Chess was a few centuries ago, then the comparison of the two sports is clearly valid, their just at different developmental stages. Furthermore, the number of maps being used isn't really an argument for the game never being understood as well. While new maps are unique, they all have shared characteristics, and once those characteristics are understood the game will be understood. The game will keep on evolving (just like chess, although more rapidly of course), but the principles will still be understood. Basically, I'd say it's a fairly good comparison but shouldn't be interpreted too strictly. Both games are a combination of strategy and tactics, both games incorporate war elements such as positioning and unit/piece placement, and both games are quite mentally taxing. However, that's about as far as the comparison goes. Yes, I understand and appreciate your argument (good argument by the way), but, the number of maps being used is a major part of my argument. It goes something like this: the number of possible games on one chess board (one map) is larger than what will ever be possible to play out by humanity during the rest of the lifespan of this universe (look here for a good start http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shannon_numberhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shannon_number). This number surprises many people, I myself have problems wrapping my head around it to be honest. A conservative estimate is that the computational complexity of SC on just one map, say Metalopolis, is _at the very least_ an order of magnitude larger than that of chess on one map (the chess board). But does that mean it is an order of magnitude more difficult than Chess? No not at all. Given enough time they will both reach a state where the upper limit of what is humanly possible to perform will be approached. In the case of Chess: the limits of working memory and abstraction (pure intelligence). In the case of SC: the limits of manual dexterity, reaction time and multitasking .. and abstraction. SC (or other RTS games of similar design) are limited in the level of understanding by the evolving map pool and the requirements of skills separate from skills required for Chess. Chess is a more cerebral and less physical game than SC. SC is a game that stress other qualities. The comparison is void even if we only played Metalopolis for the rest of the lifespan of this universe. Again, just my thoughts. Thanks for the comment. GG HF GL. Edit: tried to fix the link .. does it work? If not .. search for Shannon Number. | ||
