Before MLG started when the open bracket was listed, a few people were noting that he has had decent success in open bracket last few mlg's. Not making pool play perhaps, but going many rounds into the open and generally only falling to some pro or another.
Yay TheSTC!! This MLG belongs to you. Really well played by both in the second game, kinda weird that Stc won due to the fact that Stephano killed his marines like two times...
Does anyone know how was the first game? I heard TheStc cheesed.
Can someone help me out here? I was watching STC vs Stephano on both the red and blue streams. I thought that the streams played different matchups from each other?

Using quad view atm, its kinda hard to get all streams running on ultra qual, can someone tell me if theres a game going right now on the blue stream? Currenty, im only seeing the MLG pro circuit logo
such a retarded game... I hate how tvp often ends up like that, where neither army can really engage and we end up with a stupid post-basetrade situation
That was a good set, nice PvT play despite the weird base trade on dual sight, but that game 2 early harass with the stalkers into the 2 immortal push was really cool.

There’s a lot of people out there I think that are just afraid that they’re suddenly not going to be able to connect to the internet tonight and they won’t be able to play. I actually think that case is extremely rare, and I think we’re going to be okay.”

I refuse to support conditions like these with my viewership. This lag is horrendous, and people need to knock down Blizzard's doors till they give us LAN. This is an insult to the players, the tournament organizers, and the viewers.

Werent you watching? Sheth asked for pause but the admin or casters are only spectator so player has to pause. OF COURSE sheth doesnt know this cos the ref typed it back in spec chat. Normally players only pause if something stopping them from playing the game like a mouse dies, with just spots of lag they would rather ask opponent and refs to pause.

TvZ is the most horrible matchup to play with lag IMO.
because the game uses TCP, the obs cannot experience different lag from the players. And it's not the stream itself, as the camera is moving during the lag

I disagree that siege tank is the best unit in TvT. Rather it's the viking, because - vikings dictate who wins the tank battles due to vision, and vikings dictate who wins the BC battles.

Comparison between Chess and StarCraft is false. Granted that the computational universe of SC is larger than Chess, but SC is currently in the state Chess was in in the 1800s roughly. And it will never be understood like chess is (chess uses one map only, SC constantly adds new maps).

Well, the comparison can't really be false, it can just be more or less substantiated. If SC now is where Chess was a few centuries ago, then the comparison of the two sports is clearly valid, their just at different developmental stages. Furthermore, the number of maps being used isn't really an argument for the game never being understood as well. While new maps are unique, they all have shared characteristics, and once those characteristics are understood the game will be understood. The game will keep on evolving (just like chess, although more rapidly of course), but the principles will still be understood.
Basically, I'd say it's a fairly good comparison but shouldn't be interpreted too strictly. Both games are a combination of strategy and tactics, both games incorporate war elements such as positioning and unit/piece placement, and both games are quite mentally taxing. However, that's about as far as the comparison goes.
TLO falls into the Incontrol/Tyler/Drewbie category also. He's an entertaining player to watch, it's just that he shouldn't be in pool play at all. Not good enough.

Yes, I understand and appreciate your argument (good argument by the way), but, the number of maps being used is a major part of my argument. It goes something like this: the number of possible games on one chess board (one map) is larger than what will ever be possible to play out by humanity during the rest of the lifespan of this universe (look here for a good start http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shannon_numberhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shannon_number). This number surprises many people, I myself have problems wrapping my head around it to be honest. A conservative estimate is that the computational complexity of SC on just one map, say Metalopolis, is _at the very least_ an order of magnitude larger than that of chess on one map (the chess board).
But does that mean it is an order of magnitude more difficult than Chess?
No not at all. Given enough time they will both reach a state where the upper limit of what is humanly possible to perform will be approached. In the case of Chess: the limits of working memory and abstraction (pure intelligence). In the case of SC: the limits of manual dexterity, reaction time and multitasking .. and abstraction. SC (or other RTS games of similar design) are limited in the level of understanding by the evolving map pool and the requirements of skills separate from skills required for Chess.
Chess is a more cerebral and less physical game than SC. SC is a game that stress other qualities.
The comparison is void even if we only played Metalopolis for the rest of the lifespan of this universe.
Again, just my thoughts. Thanks for the comment. GG HF GL.
Edit: tried to fix the link .. does it work? If not .. search for Shannon Number.

Puma didnt beat MC 4-0. It was 4-3 and he didnt use 1-1-1 against him. But he used against Squirtle.
I'm a toss player and I think people really need to relax on the hate on Puma. He can play other styles really well but if the strategy is available you can't hate on him for using it. If anything, direct your rage at blizzard for not addressing this problem for so long even though everyone knows how unfair the strategy is.

Was it just me or did Sase have too many Stalkers? More Zealots might have been better, although that said the marine count would have wittled them down before enough got into melee range.
I don't even especially mind. Let PuMa get his easy wins while he still can, his poor mechanics and gimmicky play will catch up with him once the 1/1/1 gets patched. For the time being, he'll continue winning until he hits a good T or Z, just like in most tournaments he enters.

If you're going to be aggressive against 1-1-1, you can't do it half assed because one simple bunker will shut it down so easily. Either go 3G VR all-in or 4G. Otherwise, contain and defend the banshees.

NASL was like 4 months ago. Ever since that time, he lost every time the moment he met a Code S Terran or Zerg. Lost to Coca and Nada at MLG, then to MVP and Coca at the MLG Invitational, to MMA at IPL3, and even to Idra at IEM Guangzhou. 0-2 against Bomber at Orlando currently. If you put him in Code S right now, he'd go 1-2 in his group or fall to the Up/Down matches.

Puma does cloak banshee build all the time he does 1-1-1, it shouldnt be a suprice to sase to have detection ready
Sase tilting in this game. Too many Stalkers and no Obs when he must have realised that a Banshee was incoming? That said, the 1-1-1 is just obnoxious - really mindfucks with Protoss.
Wow Sase looked bad vs puma. All the wrong responses to 1-1-1 ;( I'm hoping that SaSe just didn't want to reveal his all smash vs 1-1-1 until the champ bracket

The 20 second warpgate nerf removed heavy warpgate attacks from the counter list of 5 minute starport, as it stands, with a bunker at the ramp and those marines, it is literally impossible to kill a good terran, warp prism all ins etc are all 1 base and if you stay 1 base he can throw up a second bunker and just salvage it when you expand, so ive never actuly seen anyone killed since 1.3.6 by rushing starport with marines and a bunker + scv's

Whether or not a Terran gets cloak is a coin flip. Puma didn't get it in the first game but did in the 2nd. Sase had no way of knowing in either game, and getting an Observer is a surprisingly big investment in a tight situation like that. This all comes back to that whole scouting a Terran issue.
DJWheat: Some 1-1-1s come WITHOUT cloak. Actually, many do. Sase tried his best to play absolutely safe last game by getting a faster observer. This game, he took a gamble. It wasn't a silly mistake, it was a calculated decision.

They act as if 1 immortal range is going to help, the problem is there are so many marines and its near impossible to get enough splash damage out to deal with them when tanks/banshee kill all gateway units and if you rush to colluses you have no gas for stalkers so the banshees rip them apart.
don't know what the proper response is if you put down a nexus.

Sase took a risk here, it didn't work.
In another situation I would agree with you, 1-1-1 still needs nerfing despite me being terran xD. However : Teching to collossi when you've already seen a 1-1-1 coming and you are on 2base is not a risk. Not making an observer after seeing a cloak banshee is not a risk. It's what would have happened if you didn't scout them and decided to risk, and had the bad luck. In this case, it was just abysmal decision making.

The game was over even if he had built an observer. He just used all his warpgate cooldowns, he then has to run all his probes around until he has the observer out and enough Stalkers to defend just after investing in an expansion...There is almost a garunteed loss of around 5+ Probes and a ton of lost mining time.
Even with the observer the game was already over, Sase couldn't break up Puma's ramp nor defend the banshee

You are aware that as soon as he hit 75 gas after seeing the first cloak he cronoed one out? Both assimilators were in the main with a cloak banshee raining death upon the probes.
yea thats the same issue, that protoss cant scout. Terran can scan if he wants, zerg can send overlord s to the opponents base, yes its all costly, but toss just dont have any possible ways to scout at all, its just not provided by game mechanic. Sase played really bad second game no question, but imagine how frustrate it to play after such a game 1.
SaSe definitely went on tilt there. I wouldn't look at game 1 as watching PuMa outplaying SaSe very much, though he did let puma get a siege shot off before even moving in. 1-1-1 just doesn't look fair.
The fact that blizzard buffed immortal range as the solution is kinda silly. It made the immortals better against zerg more than terran imo. What they need to do is to buff immortal armor so that they are better against marines.

They would have to make marine damage (6) get lowered that way...hence immortals would lower damage from EVERYTHING and become stupidly overpowered
Edit: Wait, you literally mean immortal armor... shit, missed that entirely.
Yeah, if immortals had 3 base armor they would be brilliant vs marines, but still not replace colossi as the go-to anti bio unit.. Sadly it would also make them take 2 damage from zerglings instead of 5, and break PvZ as immortals are already cost effective vs even hydralisks there

I guess reading three lines of text was too much for you. Allow me to rephrase myself for your convenience: He wins TvP because he abuses the 1/1/1, often in games where he doesn't even do it. Aside from that, his general play is quite poor, and definitely not "top Korean Terran" level.
Also, Nada isn't an "ultra top Terran", he's a consistent mid-range Code S player.

Look back at the game and then look at Sase's gas when the banshee comes into his main. He didn't have enough gas for the obs as he kept running his probes away. He was at like 40 gas and he made an obs as soon as he got 75 gas.
Please understand the situation before making uneducated comments... seriously I wish I didn't get so irritated by these comments

If Sase had gone dt-s, and Puma didn't have orbitals and turrets for some reason, would that be imbalanced too ? :D
What Terran doesn't get an orbital? Stop being silly.
Well, what protoss doesn't get cannons/obs at the cloak banshee timing ? Except for those proxy-gating and 4-gating that would force cloak cancel ??
Are you actually this dumb?
If Sase gets the obs, and it's a no cloak 1/1/1, he loses. End of story, obs won't help b/c Puma will have a raven, and he won't have 2 immortals when the push hits.
If he doesn't get the obs, and it's a cloak 1/1/1 puma wins.
However, if he gets the obs and it's a cloak 1/1/1, he can still lose and puma can still win, same with the vice versa.
That's the problem with 1/1/1 - total coin flip for the toss. If you prepare for it and it hits, you can lose, if you prepare for it and they're not 1/1/1ing then you DO lose.
Your DT analogy holds no water at all. Their is no heavy allin follow up to DTs, and Terran's detection (scan) doesn't require teching to, and can hold down the fort until turrets are up, which come from a building you want anyway.
Don't talk if you don't know what you're talking about.

The robo was up and idle for a long time. SaSe made two mistakes against the Cloak Banshee, he warped in his stalker rounds at his forward pylon (at that time I thought he was just gonna go for the base trade) rather than at his base to defend. He then didn't get the observer because he wasted his gas on the stalkers.
SaSe tilted hard that game, and I'm sure he knows it. It was pretty depressing to watch, but just kind of unfortunate.

He supply blocks himself all the time, at the very least. It was so bad that MrBitter and Rotterdam made fun of it at IEM when he played JYP.

You must be really desperate to defend PuMa if you claim Coca has good TvZ. Or that Nada has top3 TvT. Face it man, PuMa would be a "forever Code A" Terran, even if he managed to qualify.
Yeah and while that game Jyp also supply blocked him self tons of times.. but you don't hear 'm about that..

Actually, he does that a lot in most of his games, if you pay attention to his supply. He sometimes even manages it while on 1 base, which is quite remarkable for a good Korean player.
Anyway, it doesn't matter, like I said, he'll lose to the first good T or Z he meets in the Championship Bracket.

I'm glad I didnt watch the games of sase and puma live. I rewinded and saw the series only whent a few minutes so I kinda knew what was going to happen after the first minutes of game one. Horrible games and no fun to watch. 111 is just disgustingly op even though sase didnt play too well the build is just unfair since it takes no skill and p's skill is almost irrelevant. A well timed 111 means even in the best case scenario when you guessed correct you just have a chance of stopping it. In the other cases you are dead and there is little you can do about it.

No, he did it before the lings had gone through the wall, and he did it when he was pressuring as well, blinking forward past his own forcefields.

He lost like 5 stalkers. When you go for a pure stalker army, you can't lose stalkers like that.

This so much.
He does a very similar thing in PvP when he fast expands, with the goal of stopping mining of his enemy for 15-40 sec while he gets his 2 base economy working and he is having great success with it
Remember when someone asked in SOTG about this sentry drop thing and they said NOOO wtf bullshit who is gonna do that (incontrol looking at you) well Sase who wins games DOES it both Tyler and Incontrol said its bullshit. Sase even did it even vs incontrol I think sotg starts to lose alot of credit about their "insight".....
sick play by sase... I think an overlord in between the base on the intial drop would've saved Sheth the game because he could have reacted much sooner. Either way awesome creative play

SaSe won that game because he denied mining for 30+ sec while his second base was paying for itself, incontrols counterattack after he got 1 base mining fixed got CRUSHED by just more stuff from 2base... was awesome

That was before the warp prism buff to be honest.
Sase has been doing that drop on his stream successfully vs GM Koreans on ladder since long before the patch

At one point in this game the warp prism would have died if not for the health buff, so it does help.
Not only is he good, he has got way more potential to get better with his style. He's just going to stay ahead of other protosses that are just doing the same things

To date i have lost four ladder games to nydus into my main using vision from a ground unit in the zergs third - with FFE on antiga you have to fill your main with buildings and a lot of hydras or roaches from FFE will straight out kill you if you dont have 10000% perfect simcity so you can actuly hit them with zealots after getting back into your main quickly
ontopic, Sheth looses his third, ling runby into sase's natural, lots of lings die, retreating, more stuff going down at sheths natural, sase retreating, going to loose 5 sentries maybe
So Sase has amazing PvZ and PvP. Needs some work on this PvT and i do feel that PvT is a matchup where doing creative stuff just doesn't work very well unfortunately :/

Actually, PvZ is his worst matchup by far. That has at least been the case on the ladder in Korea. I don't know what happened vs Puma but he can play much better than that and he has held 1-1-1's from top GM Koreans multiple times before.

Ok thx. He didn't have a chance vs PuMa though
Im not sure what happened in game 1, he didnt quite have enough units after the scv pull from puma, ive seen him survive the exact same thing before though.
He made a slight macro mistake and didnt have the gas for his obs in game 2 and maybe with his warp cycles which let a banshee get into his base and deny gas mining for too long for him to get back into the game

That Roach/ling pressure (even all-in variations, im not sure what slush did) is HELL for protoss on that map, you need perfect forcefields to hold from a sentry expand and yet FFE is almost a build order loss to it because of the weird positions for metal, you need so many cannons to cover all sides

Well they were talking about zergs taking a 3rd and obviously its hard to do with rocks blocking but Hongun didnt FFE so zerg didnt need a super fast 3rd

People take a 6-7 minute third in response to gateway expands and those same gateway expands often follow up with 5-7gate attacks at 8-9 minutes where you would need the rocks gone and creep between the nat and third, it is hard for zerg to do that and not die outright to anything, but protoss is not exactly favored on the map because of the roach/ling and a few other factors
On October 16 2011 09:28 Cyro wrote: zealot beats roach 1v1, they are not "terrible" IMO
It's a matter of surface area - one on one does not happen. And even if it does, kiting is something zealots don't do. In a tight area, only the front zealots can attack, while all of the roaches can. In open areas, roaches kite zealots. So, pre-charge, roaches overpower Zealots because positioning and micro all work in their favor.

Pre-charge its pretty roach favored yea, but zeal archon for example will annihilate roaches cost for cost if you hit a nice timing, even if zeals themselves cant trade 1:1
ff's and flanks do allow you to trade zeals for suprising amounts of roaches, though

hehe have you ever watched HongUn play? Unless you're totally unfamiliar with him your comment makes no sense to me

I commented Slush´s play. What does HongUn has to do with that?
My comment makes perfect sense. We also saw that in game 3 with yet another roach/ling all-in.
And yeah. I am pretty unfamiliar with HongUn but he totally deserved to win that series imo.
Am I the only one who keep getting black screen on the streams over and over again? It's getting really fucking annoying and it only happens on the MLG streams

Restart browser and try it without changing quality (not more than once)

Same here
I got that all the time last MLG. None so far this weekend, though.

You do realize the game would have been totally different without that ninja expo - not only results, but also that SaSe's decision making was based on not knowing about the hidden base.
On October 16 2011 10:26 humbre wrote: outmacroed so hard
best be trollin For a player that apparently has unrivalled macro, he looked like he had a hard time beating a player who he was one base up with the entire time. And what do you know, Bomber is doing it again.
Yeah, unlucky for SaSe. If there had not been a third player tied for first, or if he had a better games won percentage than Puma he would have taken first in the group since tie breakers are first decided by head to head match results.
Edit: The MLG rules don't specifically address three-way ties in which head to head does not solve the order, as in this situation where SaSe beat Bomber, Bomber beat Puma and Puma beat SaSe. But I'm assuming games won percentage would still be the fallback.

Really? I guess I don't understand the tiebreakers. All 4-1, but in sets SaSe 8-3, Puma 8-3, Bomber 9-2. But Sase > Bomber > Puma > Sase. So it goes matches, games, then who beat who?

Oh god Going from the worst possible group to the worst possible loserbracket. Poor guy.

I think if SaSe and Puma were tied in games won percentage (both at 8-3) it would go to Seed, in which case Puma would win because of his higher seed. Head to head is ruled out in this case because of the three way tie, where the head to head is circular and solves nothing (Bomber beat Puma, Puma beat SaSe, SaSe beat Bomber - so that gets thrown out as tie-breaker).

Its direct score (who beat who) before games. But direct score is even here. (don't know if they count the games there as well - but would be same order) Puma is 8-2.

It does normally go to head to head first as the tiebreaker. However, that only really works with two player tie. The situation is that Sase > Bomber but Puma > Sase and Bomber > Puma. So head to head is tied all around. Hence score differential is used.

but before that would happen, there is a huge probability that SaSe would must win a PvZ vs STEPHANO coming all way thru OB and from lowers also ^^
Im rootin for these two guyz and Im sad they have to fight ;>

8-3, bomber is 9-2
You need to re-read the posts you're quoting, the discussion is about a hypothetical.
