Hi everybody,

I have tournament hosting question that I'd like some community feedback on.

In an ongoing round robin tourney, we have a scoring system that is as follows:

Matches are Bo3, and points are
2-0 = 3 points
2-1 = 2 points
1-2 = 1 point
0-2 = 0 points

Some players and tournament observers have suggested to give a bonus for winning a Bo3 straight, that is to give 4 points instead of 3 for a 2-0. I don't think that's fair, but I'm interested to hear what the community thinks about this. Maybe a bonus is justified in longer series such as Bo5 or Bo7, but I think it's too much for a Bo3 because after all you just need two wins for that.
But maybe I'm completely wrong on this. What do you think?

And one additional question: How do you keep people interested in the tourney? There is no shortage of people willing to sign up for high level round robin tournaments, but once the tournament is underway, some players always disengage and don't play their games.

How do people with experience in round robin tourneys handle these situations?

2 strong arguments against a 4pts 2-0 result :

- It's mathematically biased.
- Awarding 3 points to a 2-0 win already contains a bonus point.

Consider the following results in the case of a 4pts award for a 2-0 win:

- Player A has the following record: 2-0, 1-2, 1-2 => total of 6pts, record of 1-2 and total game results = 4-4
- Player B has the following record : 2-1, 2-1, 2-1 => total of 6pts, record of 3-0 and total game results = 6-3

Both players have an equal number of points while there is a huge disparity between their records. This bias is also present if you award 3 points for a 2-0 win, but the player with a 2-0, 1-2, 1-2 record ends up with 5pts instead of 6 so at least he would be ranked behind the guy that wins all his matches.

I agree that 4 points are too much for Bo3. Maybe in longer series such as Bo5 or Bo7, and especially if the field of players is fairly equal in skill. If some players are clearly better than others, the tourney would become too top heavy with a ranking like this.

But I do think 3 points for 2-0 and 2 points for 2-1 are justified because there should be a reward for not losing a game in a Bo3. And if you award the same number of points for 2-0 and 2-1, too many players would end up with the same score at the end.

Would love to hear from players with Round Robin experience about this
