I understand why they're doing it, but it seems a bit unfair to all people trying to get into code S via code A. The team league is awesome news though, been waiting for this for so long! Going to be absolutely awesome to have team games on a regular basis! it's not unfair cuz even if korean wins mlg he still gets spot in code s.

Not sure if they'll play the regular proleague format (winner doesn't stay) or winner league format though. Personally would like a standard proleague format so we get to see more players for the regular season at least. Then maybe a winners league for the playoffs

This seems like it'll limit the volatility of Code S by limiting the amount of people from code S playing in the up and down, while not actually changing the possible code S turnover rate. Group play also seems to be aiming to be a fairer way to determine who advances, with no more "weakest players picked by code A champions and sneaking back into code S" shenanigans happening. The group play seems like it'll give chances for people like IMMVP to stay in code S by doing some code A stomping instead of losing code S status so easily if they have 2 off days. Something that's not clear: "15 players will play in 5 player group with top two players in the group advancing to code S." => That means only 6 players (3 groups x 2 players each) get into code S. Even adding MLG champion to that it only means 7 players get into code S. A translation mistake or my math is bad? The GSTL seems like they're trying to make it so that all teams, no matter how big or small, get a chance to play and maybe upset the top dogs. If I'm not mistaken, isn't Liquid in the top 10 with the current team qualification system? But it seems more like the 10 teams will be chosen through invitation only, with Liquid being excluded since they don't have enough players. They're really trying to avoid another IM situation. All in all, some interesting changes to shake up the system, patching up holes here and there. I can even see a slight change that might make it so that they could insert another code S invite in the future by limiting the Up and Down group play by one more spot. Maybe NASL can start negotiating, as they seem to be the only other regularly happening league. I actually think with the current point system, TL would be the 10th team. Ho Seo and Fox both lost their Code S players. As Huk stayed in Code S and Jinro is in Code A, they should have enough points to qualify as the 10th team. But it would depend if they could field an entire roster for 10 weeks in Korea which seems unlikely except if GOM let's other foreigners play on their team.

I think the GOM announcement makes it pretty clear that its going to be all 10 Korean teams regardless of ranking points. Yeah, and like you said, I don't think Liquid will send all their players down there for the tournament (it lasts 2 months).

I hope the GSTL uses both general proleague format and winner's league format, both are entertaining and play to the strengths of different teams.

Now we'll get it every week starting right after this one. Cool job, GOM. Also the changes in the Code S format is great as well. Day9 was debating how he thought that would be a better system on SotG. All the changes are awesome. Now all we need are icons for the teams since it's a regular league now. And since GSTL starts so soon, with the current points, TeamLiquid should be in the top ten. fOu only has SC in GSL. Fox only has Lyn. Ho Seo only has San and BansBans. None of them have any Code S players - unlike TL who has Huk and then Jinro in Code A. Hopefully we can see a foreigner team in the GSTL League.

I think he's referring to Brood War's Proleague, which basically runs almost a whole year and had 1 full league of 10 (not split into 2 groups) and the teams would play each other multiple time. But that's not really the case for SC2. It's a step towards that, but it's still a shorter competition compared to PL.

Basically a regular season like any sport in America like hockey, basketball, etc. and then the top teams advance to the playoffs to crown the champion.

I tried searching for it on the liquipedia but there were no hits. A v B C v D Winner A/B vs Winner C/D (match 3)--> Winner of this qualifies 2-0 Loser A/B vs Loser C/D (match 4) ---> Loser of this is eliminated 0-2 Loser match 3 vs Winner Match 4 ---> Winner of this qualifies 2-1, Loser eliminated 1-2 That way it also guarantees a 1,2,3,4 ranking Oh thanks , this makes sense now, didn't know it only affects group stages.

One criticism that I can see arising from this, though, is that this may make it easier to stay in code S. On the other hand, having groups of 5 for the up/down might level the playing field. It's hard to speculate right now. GSL July can't come soon enough :D

This format is much more appealing for foreigners wishing to get into code s.
