iCCup is proud to announce our newest tournament series, the iCCup Map Series (IMS) Invitational! For our first ever event we will be hosting a eight man tournament on iCCup maps! We figured there is no better way to kick this new series off then with one of the top Korean teams, Startale!!!!
Round of 8 to be broadcasted on Tuesday, Feb 22 1:00am GMT (GMT+00:00) Round of 4 to be broadcasted on Friday, Feb 25 12:00am GMT (GMT+00:00) Finals to be broadcasted on Monday, Feb 28 12:00am GMT (GMT+00:00)
By any chance can you allow some foreigners to play in this too? Especially iCCup favorites? =) I'd love to have a chance to play with names like JulyZerg

It's just an internal ST tournament. Sorry .

VOD's for sure, they will be on our Ustream and we will get them on Youtube also!
Oh wow. Looks like February 21st will be one of the greatest days to watch SC2. With the Jinro vs Idra showmatch, iNcontrol's big "announcement," AND this iCCup invitational for Startale, it's going to be a good day.
Hopefully, the invitational will be a huge boost in the exposure of iCCup maps in the competitive community. It's good to have maps from somewhere other than Korea and Blizzard.
didn't, but they gave up an epic series so it doesn't matter whether they have won or not. This will be awesome (after this match you should choose Squirtle over Torch and ignore the poll^^).

That series was out of hand. SO SO good, I was 100% blown away by it, I am 10x as excited now for this. Might see some matches like Bomber vs. Squirtle!
DJWheat will be announcing the brackets and invited players for this event on Weapon of Choice tomorrow! Make sure and tune in, the player list is totally insane!!
Weapon of Choice will be going live in about 30 minutes and one topic is the brackets for this event! Make sure and tune in to see who is playing, you will not be disappointed!

Its right above your post. I quoted it here:

If we get enough viewership and interest I intend to do A LOT more of these with both Koreans and Non Korean teams. So tell all your friends about this event !

I have no doubt that these maps will make for some very entertaining games - certainly better than what we get on Blizzard's default.
Hopefully post game interviews with the players' thoughts on the maps (?)
Yep, TorcH is hooking us up there . Probably going to be some 1 on 1 interviews and hopefully a group discussion about them with all the ST guys as we know how modest Koreans can be in interviews .
Pretty nice Lineup. Startet the stream in the perfect moment when DJWheat starting to announce. :D Going with Bomber or Squirtle as the winner of this.
On February 14 2011 06:12 Xxio wrote: Squirtle vs. Ace
Double elim. please. If Squirtle gets knocked out in a PvP in his first game I will fall into a week long depression.
I wish we could have got a double elim but the prize pool was really to small to ask a team that competes in the GSL to do double elim for. Sorry for the small prize pool in the first place, but I'm personally sponsoring this event so it's all I could muster for it.
Damn I only just found this thread, really looking forward to this event. You should probably edit the title so it's more apparent that Startale (and their best players at that) are playing in this.
I can't say I love all the maps at a first glance, but I'll be really interested to see how they play out.
On February 14 2011 07:42 PhiliBiRD wrote: how did u get koreans to play in a $200 invitational? interesting to say the least!
I used my skillz! lol
Luckily over my short time as a tournament organizer/stream operator, I have established the contacts and reputation to allow events like these to happen. This is a small one, but if this is a hit I have a sponsor that might be interested in making more of these happen, more often, and with bigger prize pools!
This should be getting some serious attention. I mean freaking July is playing in a tournament to promote foreign maps. Can you imagine if this was 2005? Thread would be 100 pages long. I took a long break from the SC scene, so it is still tough to wrap my head around the fact that top pros as well as all the old guys we used to deify like July/Nada/Boxer and um uhh Sync? are willing to compete in foreign tournaments.
On February 14 2011 08:25 PigFur wrote: You need Incontrol to announce that he'll be announcing the announcement that this tournament already has been announced.
Anyway, this looks great! It obviously deceivers way more attention than its getting o.O Have you tried reddit? Might help.

ggobugi* for the epic mothership win plz.
*<edit> can't bring myself to call him squirtle :o
Watch your fridge, 'cause JulyZerg is gonna be eating up the competition.
Anyways, really great player list. Considering how strong Startale has been doing in GSL and GSTL and considering how great these maps are, it should be an amazing tournament.

I got to be honest I never thought I would host a tournament with July on it. It's sort of awesome how things have changed with SC2, in BW that would have been impossible.

I'm very excited to see this, I also think its hilarious that TorcH is listed to cast the round of 4 apparently they're ruling out him actually beating August

No, if he beats August we will just simply have someone else jump in and cast for his match and he will cast the other.

at first I was just blindly loving the gsl maps and ignoring iccup, but after playing and watching games on the iccup maps I've realized they're insanely awesome

Oh man I am looking forward to this. Squirtle, Bomber, Ace, and JULYZERG, and TORCH! Everyone playing today has made the GSL or at least code A before. Highest level competition since the GSTL finals for sure.
IMO bomber is the best player on startale, but Squirtle's PvT is too godly. The biggest threat to Squirtle is in the first match where he has to PvP against Ace. July has shown very strong ZvP in the GSTL so if he makes it to the finals he could give Squirtle some trouble too.
Neo Enigma feels really small. Curious also seemed to have disadvantageous spawn positions; he probably should broken down the rocks to his third early on and then taken his base there. Those rocks actually seem really key, because they shorten the rush distance by a lot.
On February 22 2011 10:20 Gentso wrote: Looks like Zerg can't get a third against Terran in that position. o_O
He never tried to take his normal third in this position and destroy his rocks tho, that would have made it much easier than trying to take the gold or the other base that was too far away to defend.
Watching now, not gonna lie, JP during Day9s king of the beta was a HORRIBLE announcer (nerve issues mainly). Since then hes been absolutely fantastic. Props to JP for the vast improvement.
@The Casters: One of you was a bit in the future.^^ But beside from that you are really really awesome. Sorry that I never heard of you before but that first 2 game casts are impressing me more than the most of the casters which are out there. Go on to do your great job.
//also I cannot believe I'm still awake. Almost 3 o'clock and in a few hours is gsl.^^
Testbug is such a quality map. I feel like it could do with a couple walls in the mid-map, but it follows the golden rule of BW map making; wide open middle, constricted sides.

Tournament is called iCCup Map Series (IMS) Invitational!. Isnt as u described "pushing" their own maps WHOLE point of it. Thats great idea to make this maps more famous and more played by inviting korean players. I think we all agree that new maps are needed because ones we play now are awfull.
But still there will be few people like you who never appreciate such a ideas and do NOTHING for community beside pointless trolling on forum.

Not sure that's warranted. I've seen a lot of the IMS show matches that ran weekly for a while. Yes- I agree new maps are needed. But I think it's important to concede that they aren't going to come from iccup.

Pretty simple. I mean, just approach a Korean team and say: U guys bored from playing same maps all day? Do you want to make a quick buck by playing a little in-house tourney on new maps? Here's the dough, give it to the winner. Send replays to iccupmakesbestmaps@gmail.com

I think July will beat August easily and move on to the finals.
Just watched the Bomber-Curious VOD on Neo Enigma. The rush distances do feel Blizzard-small, especially after all the games we've been seeing on the new maps. Bomber's ability to send a seemingly endless stream of marines straight to Curious' natural wouldn't have worked as well on a map like Tal'Darim or Crevasse, with their size and easier third.
I'm not familiar with the map editor--are there set map sizes as in Brood War (e.g. 256x256) or are they entirely custom?

The map editor is very flexible, you can adjust map bounds very easily (not set map bounds).

Cool I just confirmed with TorcH that we will be having interviews with the two semi finalist players and a ST group discussion we will show after the matches! Won't be epic hour long interviews or anything, but VERY cool that they were willing to take their time to do this for us foreign fans. <3 Startale
Ace loves sneaking hidden expos on Neo Enigma. Sneaking the small golds makes some sense because you don't have to send too many workers over to saturate them, but he keeps getting them scouted!

July opens 12 hatch again, and August does a 1 rax expand, walling off his natrual.
Both players macro up on two bases for a while. Midgame July starts transitioning into muta-bling and takes the gold, while august moves out with a fearsome marine tank army.
July barely makes his banelings in time, and has his mutas loop around to catch to the tanks from the behind. July's fearsome muta micro takes out a tank, and finishes of the rest of the army with little economic damage.
August attempts another marine tank push but it is easily fended off with speed banelings. Soon August finds himself at 2 bases vr 4 and July has utter map control.
August tries to push again this time with a thor, but August gets destoryed and July morphs some broodloards to finish off August
I really enjoy this show. Ambitious production, good cooperation from Startale and especially Torch, good angle with interviews covering maps and everything, good maps =), nice games.
Basically sums up SC2. Most people don't realize the mobility of toss because they insist on going Collo. But players like Whit-Ra are dominating for the simple fact that they abuse this mobility. Furthermore a 200/200 Toss army is pretty redicoulous to deal with unless you meched, but if you meched you usually get out maneuvered.
Terran is without a doubt very strong especially on small maps because of 1 base play, early stim pushes, and the fact that the opponent is FORCED to engage a Mech heavy terran. They become weaker as maps become larger because these three things can't be abused. 1 base play and early stim is relatively weaker because the opponent can prepare with more time, and mech units can be easily bypassed due to the lack of a way to force engagement. Something Spider-Mines did. I just hope Blizzard realizes their weakness on larger maps and balances accordingly.
As for Zerg. On these new maps their looking better, but i still feel their options need to be opened. But July really showed the power Zerg can have which i feel was only possible because of these maps. I feel his play style reminded me more of Brood War then the typical Zerg play we see more often. Also note how he aggressively took map control
Hopefully HOTs comes soon and addresses these issues(Not in Blizzard terms soon). But these ICCUP maps are great and really fix alot of issues, and provide excellent game play.

The Interviews are very good, looked like almost the same as my opinion. Grats to Superouman for making such a great map.
Also I'm so pumped for the finals. Clash of the titans! AND BRING BOMBER UP TO MLG!
I like watching July lately, kind of refreshing to have a zerg go for so many counter busts, such nice ling control defending that early push in game 2 on testbug too. His refusal to spread creep still baffles me, but that game 3 was nice as well well =)
Ahw, if July's name was in Red it would've been better. Now people might think he's terran (obviously only retarded people will think this, so basicaly it's fine)
=D btw: this is the best tournament so far, even though it's only on iCCup maps and not other user created maps.

The micro was mediocre, but July was completely in the dark. If he had known the attack was incoming, it would have failed miserably--but Bomber's hellions kept July from knowing that the push was coming.

LOlwat? July blows up a random tech lab that does nothing, then kills a depot with lings? Why not just kill the depot first? July's micro is just so bad...

When you think of some of the truly god-awful play we've seen even in Code S of the GSL it's incredible to think a guy like Bomber, who appears to be legitimately one of the best players in the world, can't even make it into Code A.

Code A qualies are seriously brutal >__<
July actually succeeding in baneling busting Bomber that time and getting in with the depo down.

I wonder who he lost to in the code A qualifiers...I mean MVP lost 0:2 to July so it's entirely possible that something similar happened to Bomber in the qualifiers.

Sadly it shows the randomness of SC2 in the current state of the game...
And the series is kinda strange. Seems like the whole series keeps not much longer than one hour. o.O
I don't think people can fault Mvp on metal anymore, this 2 base (sort of...definetely way more all-in then Kyrix) bane bust will work occasionally for July (as it just worked on Bomber too) and it's clear he loves it.
Well that was a really disappointing series :/ July's play fluctuates so much. Half the time he plays really solid and half the time he plays like trash. I really hope he steps it up against Clide.

I don't really think bomber had to abuse anything to take the win. July is really starting to feel like a one trick pony :/
We didn't get to see July do anything else because of the builds Bomber used, especially the successful bunkering that either considerably hurt his economy or killed him outright. July was forced into all-in play because he was too far behind to try and catch up economically and and not get rolled over by a second attack.

Bomber was just exerting standard pressure at the start of each game, usually as he expanded behind it and July decided to all-in him every time where a more macro oriented Zerg would not.
I'm guessing July has just been owned by Bomber too many times in practice to believe he could beat him straight up.

Why are you surprised? He did what was easiest to win with on the maps played.
I think it's really amazing what you guys are doing and what the iCCup mapmaking team has produced, but I desperately want the maps to be larger. If you compare the minimap size to your average Brood War map - Destination, Fighting Spirit - only the 3 new GSL maps are comparable in size.

I am sorry but what!?
It is Bomber's fault that July played terribly?
Your post basically says "Bomber didn't play fair, he shouldn't be allowed to attack July until he successfuly has his expansion up" .. Plenty professionals hold off bunker rushes and early marine pressure; July failed..
Are we gonna hear what ST players thought about the map? It was mentioned on the stream that we are gonna get their opinions on the maps and tbh that was the part I was looking forward the most

July played like shit, I'm not talking about his quality of play. I'm saying it would've been harder for him to go into a macro game than just all-in aggression because of his setback.

Yeah well it is kind of sad to see the same thing from July 5 games in a row resulting in a 4-1 loss..
I hope it was just mindgames as they both practice together and July can pull out someting better in the GSL.. After all he is still the god of war :D

Watch the Vods of day 2, the discussion and player interviews are uploaded on youtube as far as I know.

Thanks for making this tournament happen but damn this was one of the most disappointing series I have ever seen. I'm more disappointed with july then impressed by bomber.
These ST interviews are always amazing, no matter how short they may seem compared to interviews with foreign players. Rooting for ST players in the GSL now.
Thanks TorcH, and a big thanks to Diamond for the tournament.
By the way, any chance we could see this thread updated with a "Recommended Games" section?
Woah, must have been too busy teaching. Totally missed this tournament. This is very awesome and I really hope this is an indicator that iCCup's mapmaking team is getting their name out enough that some bigger tournaments will pick up their maps.
I can't help but say July. He's amazing, watched him play Code S and saw how well he played. He truly didn't lie when he said he would give us good games.
