In the second game Socke wanted to go for carriers (love Socke btw :D) to break the tank line but Goody moves out and got killed (nice use of phoenix to lift the tanks).
Predy won against Cloud 2:1! Gratz! (I know you are here often and maybe read it)
Goody going for quick concussive shells marauder push, Socke going for 4-gate! Both move out and stim finished in the right moment. Goody won the first fight! Keeps on pushing, missed FF by Socke, Goody takes the win - 2:1
I dont understeand how everyone is making fun of Goody. In BW, this was like standard playstyle and I if maps are going to be larger, I feel this is required playstyle to stay in game vs both P and Z..

True! I like his playstyle and I like that almost nobody wants to play against him, lol. And he is very successful with it. In game 3 he showed that he can play different, too.
Stream 2 looks really good, own3D seems to work much better than Octoshape. Nice work from ESL to get the second stream running. Eagerly waiting for evening's games, Rotti's casting is always good.

Sorry, I didn't want it to look like if I was making fun of Goody - quite the opposite. His style is very "frustrating" to play against and he is really succesful with it. Since the mech-style in PvT starts catching on (Jinro anyone?), maybe he will be seen as someone who pioneered this in the future; who knows.
predy not on par with the top 10-15 european players yet, too many mistakes (lead in both games against goody at TLO, lead in first game against socke today)

After 15 mins of 1 base play (and great harass from both, Sjow only micro"ed better) both players decide to take their natural. Sjow drops 2 tanks on the high ground and seems to take the game.
The presenters are cracking me up. Never have I seen so many tanks.
Also I left for it seemed only ten minutes and Sjow and Cloud were playing on LT, I thought Cloud had done an epic comeback when I return to 200/200 seige lines...

Well, if both mine one side of the map and have roughly equal army trades all game, your opponent has the same amount as you

Well if you see yourself that the map is pretty mined out, and you are sitting on 15/10k..you might want to just "chance" it.

You scan, see he doesn't have that many production facilities, trade armies and produce faster and wtfpwn him.
If not for the casters, this would be horrible. This is hilarious now though. But I would like to see a nuke. Or a seeker missile. Something. Seeker would be better than dropping mules all day. Get energy based attacks!

Goody had the top expo for a while and mined really fast with mules, that is why he has the mineral advantage over his opponent.

Ya, spell casting could easily win this game eventually.
Only problem would be making the switch as you'd have to kill your own tanks/thors for a while. However, since neither has attacked for 30 minuts I'd say you can get away with it
The casters are doing a great job of keeping this ticking over, it must be frustrating to actually have to talk about this game rather than simply laugh at the absurdity xD
This is the only game of Starcraft being played anywhere. Everyone must watch this. If you are thinking about starting another game so people can watch, don't.

Haha, I wish they could. They actually tried earlier, but no games were available. Whitera and Naama soon though! I wonder if this game will end in time?
They will do that the second another game starts Nazgul. :D Naama vs White ra should start in 3 or 13 minutes I think. :D Imagine if the next two games are like 5 minute long and Sarens just marine rushes.
On January 20 2011 22:26 Liquid`Nazgul wrote: would it be really bad manner for the casters to leave the game and just go into a new one? :D
I think they can watch another game at the same time as this. So they can just change camera and still be in game
Yup they run two side by side, Hasu obs in one and Filly (?) obs in the other. Then just switch between which screen to show on stream depending on what they want to cast, can swap between matches midway too when there's more than one on etc ^^
The difference in experience is starting to show. Goody has been in this spot hundreds of times and he knew what he was doing probably since 30 minutes ago. Lol.

A noob question, in a game like this wouldn't it make sense to build a few ravens and work with auto-turrets? You could do a lot of damage with those without losing ressources.

It would have been a cool transition. With PDD and Seeker Missile they would basically be untouchable and they could hit and run. I don't really know though, my personal experience in TvT is pretty limited. Maybe there is some reason they can't get that many out. But even 4 would have been great.

Well I would prefer a BC over a raven vs thors.
Yeah, which is what we saw, but the pdd negates the thors missiles as well, so one pdd would allow the other 3 ravens to throw down 3 missiles then pull back to the tank line. Yamato could have been used more, but the ravens would be more mobile. Either way, I just wanted to see something before 70 minutes into the game.
On January 20 2011 22:39 ondik wrote: seriously, does Goody do this frequently?
Well, Goody doesn't attack, ever.
Sometimes his defense just gets so big it crosses path with the opponent.
Lol this pretty much wins the thread....it's funny because it's true, Goody never really "attacks" he just expands his defens until he hits his opponent. Awsome summery of his playstyle.
With the amount of moneys they had, could have easily gone mass Raven and start some pro harass with the turrets. Energy is also free, so it's a very good choice at a game that stage.
Fly over to the enemies production facilities, drop 10x turrets, they do surprisingly good dmg. Fly out. By the time that mech lugs it way there, he's down a few factories.
Still, why attack...there??? I mean, I get that White-Ra has been doing this lately against 2 rax expo, crushing wide-open expos like xel naga, but attack up the ramp with immortals? The second immortal wasn't even shooting for some time.
Could somebody tell the casters they have the names switched at the top of the screen? Naama is the blue terran and White.Ra the red protoss. Now I'm confused everytime I look at the top of the screen (luckily it's not a mirror).

Yes, really. Now Naama bv Ra is obsed by the "calm" obs again. The other one kept scrolling in every direction and boxing everything, I had trouble following anything on the screen.
This obs keeps uses his mouse much more and scrolls more smoothly. I find it way more pleasant to watch. And it is still pretty fast.
On a side note, it is nice to see a good game now after that crapfest.

Jinro played mostly thors. Tanks need a wall in a front of them - bunkers, big units (f.e thors) or a lot of them. You cant just have 12 tanks and 5 marine/marauder. I still think tanks aren't a good choice vs toss. There must be a reason why pretty much no one uses them.

At least on LT jinro had a pretty heavy siegeline, and made it work with only a few thors to take on the immortals.

Filly does cast on a regular basis, but he is clearly uncomfortable casting in english. He even stated on ESL Tv a while ago, that he doesn't want to cast in english anymore. Overall I think he improved so it's ok. Hasu on the other side is doing a great job in my opinion.
Is it just me or is Naama playing really really terribly? He had like twice Whitera's army size, who even had some of his army away from his base, yet Naama decided to leave?
My god, had no idea this was starting today. Tuned in to see Goody lose bloody everything to the HT drop. Wow, can't believe he just clumped them like that.
Shaky decision making by naama there. Moving all in then not really moving all in, retreating while his economy gets eliminated. At this point White-ra can only get further ahead, with plenty of tech for white-ra and no economy for naama.

Terrible, terrible play.
Prolly drunk.
That was truly one of the most bizarre decisions I've seen in SC2 so far, looks like MULEs are allowing him to recover fairly well though. Insane.
If he just wanted to contain him and then leave again - that would have been okay. But pulling pretty much all SCVs and then deciding (Whitera didn't do anything!) to pull them back? Bad move..
It's like the battle of the terrible games atm. First Goody vs Sarens now Naama showing he can hang with the them. Is he drunk or something? He's shown way better play in the past

You must play Terran, or having a bad day. I enjoy seeing a good representation of Protoss since most of the time all we get is 4 gates or some mass colossus play. If you don't like seeing Terran lose than I assure you, there will be probably 50 more games with Terran they are bound to win atleast 1 of them since almost every tournament has a Terran in the finals

I play random, well his positioning with the Immortals and use of storm drops and it seems that White-Ra can makes a good recovering in most situations. If that isn't a good understanding of the game I apologize.
Man, Naama brought like all SCVs for an all-in, than killed expo and decided to do nothing for 5 min.. Then brings all SCVs back just to get stormed and decided to go into macro game.. Any Protoss would then enjoy teching, expoing and owning the shit out of Terran.. And then you come to say how awsome White-ras possitionin is and how beautiful was his recover?? Oh cmon..

It's clear that WhiteRa didn't win this game, it was Naama who gave away the win. The drop play was still nice to watch.

Stop crying, he still had a sentry and few HTs with energy in main, you think that he should've a moved into templars AND most likely getting his army split by ffs? Also if white-ra hadn't dropped then naama would've never left ramp. Comparing white-ra with protosses you see in ladder is a joke unless you are some top korean.
Seems like interesting games but I have a comment: Is anyone else annoyed by the fact that the casters box all the time? and franatically clicking around?

I really like it, Im not such a fan of the screen movement - but whilst you are focussing on a certain area of the map you might aswell click everything to let people get info on everything
I've really enjoyed watching some of Whitera's pvp and pvt games the last few days- quickly becoming a big fan from a spectator's pov. Before I was a little disenchanted with his pvz play which generally involves a colossi+ray deathball, where you either view a zerg player drown trying to figure out how to engage such a mix, or whitera never quite getting the mix he wants.
Although I mainly play protoss, until recently the players I enjoyed watching the most were creative zerg or terran players such as TLO, Jinro, and Fruitdealer. While there were certainly impressive protoss players to watch, the play was generally the same unimaginative overpower-with-tech or timing push approach. Thusly I was really only a fan of toss pros for certain specific qualities such as huk's slick control of large armies, kiwikakis micro in early game aggression, whitera's calm and consistency, ogsmc's well timed builds, manas templar play, hasu's prism play, or tyler's good unit compositions. Lately however I've really enjoyed viewing some new creativity from a lot of these guys. <3 all foreign toss

The next SC2 match will be Kas vs DeMusliM on the main stream after the CS match ends http://tv.esl.eu/de/55-flv-fs1/ then whitera vs kas on the same stream. I think that's what's happening anyway.
Demu or Kas, who's going to do it like a G-6...like a G-6...
I think I'll take Kas, though he's not played quite so well since winning the TLOpen (but then again maybe he was keeping it low after winning that and with this tourny on the horizon) I think he'll probably be solid enough to take out Demu
Just watched the CS game... takes me back. Still love it. Demuslim fighting! mouz vs Sk at the same time? oh that's cruel.. Have a soft spot for SK still from back when I used to play.

The QuakeLive and CS have been fucking amazing (spartie vs strenx/fnatic vs navi especially)
The PvT's have been pretty entertaining, and there have been a few good TvT's (though none as high quality as Demu vs Kas should be). Only Goody vs Sarens made us want to cry.
I tried to watch CS, but didn't find it particularly entertaining. Guess that's because I've never played a fps though, completely oblivious to all the subtleties ^^
I didn't find CS that entertaining, alltough I played for a pretty long time. It's not fun to watch imho. Quake on the other hand rocks. Really "impressive" stuff

Well the thing about cs that it's hard to always spectacte the right player. Just when you think: "Oh this guy's going to do something amazing his role is throwing flashbangs over a wall and faking or wall-banging when the others guys are actually making the push. And the action mostly takes 20/30 seconds so you have to make sure not to miss it. But if you can indeed spectate the right players and see the teamplay it can be nice.

I prefer SC, but just slightly before Quake, Cs is far behind even though I played Cs on reasonably good level, but your description is funny, its like describing SC as moving units around the map in circle.

What an ignorant post. Some of these quake players have been practicing for more than 12 years to perfect their game, it has everything to do with skill. Don't criticize something you obviously don't understand.

Yes, I think that's the problem. I just think it's not a good game to watch, at least not when you're not spectating yourself. You miss too many things, you can't watch 10 players at once. If you could time everything perfectly, it's of course very nice, but that's never happening :>

It seems that drops are what decides TvTs lately.. I hit this bio/drop play on ladder recently very often and its very frustrating to play against.. You cant engage, because there is immidiately drop in your base and you need to go for base trade. And this is nothing like muta harass, which can be prevented with missile turrets. 1) The players both chose not to veto the map so imo not the tournaments fault they are going to play on it. Carmac and Rotterdam were also very surprised neither of them veto'ed it.
2) TLO is sick at home and thus couldn't go to Kiev.

Just because the players don't veto a map deemed by Blizzard to be unusable for competitive play months ago is no excuse for using that map in a tournament. It's not like kulas is the only terrible map out there to veto.

They regard the whole thing, qualification included, as one tournament. During the qualification rounds kulas was still in the ladder map pool. And they wont change the map pool mid tournament, just like GSL does not.
Also, as long as tehre is no zerg in the tourney Kulas is a decent map. I am actually looking forward to see it again. Same with desert oasis.
yeah i think it's because the qualifications began months ago and then the admin(s) didn't want to change the map pool durng season i guess. pretty weird still btw still wondering why studio1 is so much worse than 2

According to gomtv, the previous 3 "seasons" were just "qualification" for the GSL we have right now...so should kulas still be in the map pool?
Sorry for the stupid example, but if some maps get removed because they are outright terrible, it's ridiculous to keep them in just because the map was used during the qualifiers already. If removing the map makes the game more fair, shouldn't the tournament organizer be the more keen on removing the map too? Where's the incentive to have the game stay "less" fair?

I guess its because studio1 is on location at Ukraine while stuido2 is the usual esl studio.
No studio 1 on ESL.tv always has worse quality than studio 2. Its always somewhat blurry. But I have no idea why this is the case. But its unrelated to the streaming service.

afaik because its "real" tv equiptment from the old GIGA studios and rather old
afaik they use rather old tv technology for the live events (4:3, blurry), whereas Studio 2 is "state of the art". Take's Homestory cup had the best quality I'v ever seen (since he uses band new equipment), so you can not really say in general what esl's stream quality is like

I think it's mostly americans underestimating him though. Since Kas never plays non-EU tourneys americans didnt really know him until the TL open win.
Well, WhiteRas PvT isn't really good. He should have already lost the series vs. naama, he was very lucky there. He always looses against more or less early marine/marauder pressure. They can kite zealots forever and destroy stalkers. Without a good amount of Colossi which are pretty much not affordable off from one base, I don't see how you can win this :>
Edit: And why was it greedy? Kas also had his expansion up (even earlier).

the fast switch to HT was greedy. He was basically hoping Kas would overcommit on vikings and not attack too early.
also saying "it isnt really good" is a bit of an odd exaggeration It might not be as good as Sockes and Manas atm but he's still a beast.
Eurosport are going to compare chess to Starcraft 2.. really? I can see how TLers think that's a good comparison as everything's a good comparison here but come on, can't at least they see SC2 for what it is? A really competitive, fast paced RTS?

The new draw function has.. uh, creating some interesting scenarios to say the least. Not sure if I like the intensity or if I find it stupid.
To some extent. It only takes a handful of marines in dropships to wipe out an entire base w/ stim because their dps is so high. If an opponent's army is out of position and they can't defend it with units at home, going for a base trade is quite often your best option at that point.
also: merz had no idea demuslim had 2 other comand centers in other locations, so he was praying he could possibly kill the few structures he knew remained. Had the whole map been revealed to him he would have gg'd sooner.

He knew demuslin had a bigger army, he knew demuslim still had atleast one CC up, some of his main was still alive. Merz had a smaller army, no income and one startport that was floating in top right to keep him in the game.
I don't understand how you can say it wasn't obvious the game was lost, even from merz' perspective.

Keep in mind how the game played out, not how it looked in hindsight and with total vision. He almost killed Demuslim's only command center at the gold expansion before the 2 others had started (or maybe just been started). At that time he was very much still in the game to force a draw. To add even more to that, he then went and dropped the base killing the starport, but didn't see the single viking that had had left just seconds beforehand.

Demuslim lost all his CCs, he was just rebuilding them. Merz had income faster than Demuslim after the base trade.
MarineKing had no income and a smaller army vs Nada, he still won. Better to be sure you lost than make a huge huge mistake.

Don't think you should assume that your opponent isn't going to make a mistake, the situation in GSL was a little different but NaDa had the bigger army but MKP made better tactical decisions and won the game in the end. merz did the right thing trying to see if he could catch the army in a bad position or something like that.

Just noticed that each of the player screens have a mirror screen towards the crowd, looks really cool! (Dunno if this is standard on tournaments or anything as ive never been to one).

It's standard, at least on ESL Events. It's especially nice for CS because you can see every players PoV.

He knew demuslin had a bigger army, he knew demuslim still had atleast one CC up because of no vision. Merz had a smaller army, no income and one startport that was floating in top right to keep him in the game.

Yeah, but he could confirm the command center at the gold expansion, and he also knew that's exactly where Demu's confirmed larger army was parked. Demu could've gone afk and there was no way merz could've won.
Was he hoping that Demu would somehow move-command across the map and he'd get to destroy it? Or that Demu would abandon his CC for no reason? The only thing I can think of is that he was hoping to kill all of Demu's stuff, then suicide drop to finish off the CC. But of course, had that been Demu's only remaining building, he would've repaired it if he had any minerals at all.

Make no mistake, Merz knew he was behind after seeing the size of his army. But think of how long the game actually went from the point where he forced demuslim to lift his gold command center and lift it away. He then elevatored into demuslim's main to kill the starport. He didnt' see viking. Add in the travel time of the viking when it finally found his starport. At that time he knew demuslim had 1 command center and 2 refineries. Obviously it's a shitty situation, but he still had hope, and it's not like he was dragging on the game for 20 minutes like Canata.

4:3 on premium as well.
Really? I thought it would be similar to Take's set-up, considering he's ESL and all. Take can sort a crisp and clear HD and widescreen stream while the European championship is stuck with 4:3? Whaaaat?

They are still using old real TV Equipment from GIGA. Buying new stuff would cost them a fortune. But don't ask me why they are still using that old stuff. They might have their reasons...

Naama has been off his game since he won DreamHack Winter 2010.
Shouldnt White-Ra have a pretty obvious lead over all the Terrans? Since he probably only practiced PvT prior to this tournament while the Terran mostly practiced TvT? This I think should be the main reason if we see Socke and White-Ra in top 3.

It's not just him. I really like rotterdam but today he is really talking too fast and too much...it gets a little bit annoying I have to say - really like him otherwise though :>
Despite my harsh words earlier, I think they finally found a good balance. The dark haired guy (Filly?) is doing a pretty good job at obsing, and Hasu is getting more confident at commentating. They are obviously trying hard to make it work, so props to them.
Anyway, they casted through Goody vs Sarens, so they deserve a medal (Purple Heart, obviously ). If it hadn't been for their commentary, many (including me) would have shut down the stream.

Agree with that, took me one hour to get used to it, the speed at which he talks plus the fact that poor Carmac is doing his best to place a word now and then...I hope he is ok with it (I guess he is since he wasn't supposed to cast, just does it to help), otherwise it must be annoying. But once you get past that and focus on the game, it's actually ok.

As long as it doesn't have Goody TvT is usually fine.
Goody is unbeaten so far, nothing can stop the mech juggernaut =p

Demu and WhiteRa have both looked good, I thought Sjow looked in great form this morning too and he should definitely make it out of his group either first or second.
That was ten seconds of pure micro brilliance from Tarson. Picking off the expansion-minded probe with the banshee, then exploiting White-Ra's position to pick off two colossi with the viking-point defense snipe. Superb.

This is painful to watch at times, doesn't Tarson know how to leapfrog his tanks? More than once he unsieges everything and let's Ra attack him before he sieges up again. I doubt he has a chance now, lategame TvP is hard enough without being at only one mining base vs four of P.
man tarson played like shit that game. always happy to see whitera win, but tarson failing at leapfrogging tanks, not teching to ghosts, engaging in weird positions etc. makes this a less delightful whitera victory than the previous set between the two

WhiteRa is getting soooo good at splitting his army up and flanking... very few Protoss players are doing this at the moment. And i feel like that and his excelent use of warp prisms is why he is doing very well at the moment...

Have you watched code A games too? Before Ro4 (well, you could argue Ro8) it was just painful to watch. Like, real, physical pain.
The 3 control group "this map belongs to me" play, the warpprism-HT-drops, also the incredible colossus snipe from tarson...all this isn't some cute stuff that on real high lvl wouldn't work, it's sadly just not done that often.
btw thanks to the guy who uploads the replays. i've NEVER seen any sc2 tournament where replays are uploaded 1 minute after the game ends.... and i've downloaded a lot of tournament replays...

Well he was proberly refering to the Code S level players, since most of the Code A players are horrible and have had terrible matches most of the turnament this season. Most of the EU and NA top players would easily be able to compete in the Code A turnament.

No but these players are among the very best of europe, so it would be unfair to compare them to players that are worse than the top 32 of korea.

Did fine man, speeding up at decisive engagements isn't something anyone should complain about. What caster doesn't do that? Great job casting.
Kudos to Carmac as well, he really didn't seem to enthusiastic at the start but the casting really picked up after a game or two. Also liked the "noob" questions, "Why shouldn't you get shields?" for example. While it's common knowledge for a lot I'd bet my soul on the fact that a lot of viewers had no bloody idea.
Even games I wouldn't give a damn about in most cases were entertaining enough (think TvTs). I've tried to watch some high level TvT with other some other casters (won't name) and it has mostly been physically impossible. So yeah, great job guys.

@Carmac
Really liked your casting, and as mentioned before, having someone not as experienced isn't even a bad thing. You know enough to cast a game, even saw things Rotterdam didn't because he was too concentrated on something else and you asked the right questions.
@Rotterdam It was really a bit too fast in the beginning but go better in the end (you probably got a bit tired ^^). I really have no problem when commentators are talking really fast on really intense moments, but it's nice when they slow down a bit from time to time.
Thanks for a great day's streaming guys, really appreciate it ( twas done personally for me after all )
Quite surprised how well the dual casting worked, wouldn't have thought having two games playing at once would work but somehow it did. Really quite an original way to tackle that inherent problem at the group stages. So don't let the nay says get your down, satisfaction is always quieter

yeah, best was in homestorycup where he suddely used guardian shield on all his sentrys, naniwa saw that and just went into his base cause there were no forcefields left^^
The OP says that WhiteRa is on top of group A but the link has DeMuslim on top.. minor inconsistency hehe.. Except for Demuslim there very well could be a PvP final.. with only 2 Protosses in the whole thing that would be quite funny hehe
Holy crap watch WhiteRa vs Naama on scrap. Spoiler alert below
Naama was inches away from victory with his push, sieging up at the bottom of the ramp, WhiteRa has his balls to the wall but does a storm drop that kills ALL BUT 6 SCVs. My jaw literally dropped watching that.

He obviously talks from a casual spectator's point of view. It's boring. Now how is the amount of years they spent "running around in circles" any relevent to that?
excellent casting, and excellent games. white-ra is a breath of fresh air into the group stages, and into the PvT match up in general, never seen such persistant and successfull use of warp prisms before, and something I hope invogorates the meta-game from the protoss stand point, collo v viking count can get abit stale sometimes.
