This time it'll be much more organized and decisive. We have already came up with the plans ahead of time. As for splitting it into 2 days it's rough because some people are driving 2 hours to get here. We might be able to host tournaments like that in the future kind of like green forest cafe's tournaments.

Usually you'll have the rest of the day to play, but all the computers we have will be used for the tournament so u can stick around and play after the tournament or bring your own computer.
but in my opinion a better venue would be Howie's Game Shack at Buena Park The biggest game place ever and they serve food as well, something to look into.

sorry, i'm not hosting the tournament the lan center is. Also howie's has really bad computers. I know the managers of both howie's and even they admit that =].
On November 08 2010 12:36 Shew wrote: Did you guys fix the air conditioning? and do you have more computers this time?
The air conditioning is not fixed. However the weather should be getting cooler so that shouldn't be an issue. Also they have lots more fans. They will also be having more computers this time through. Also few people will be bringing their own.
So if the LAN center is hosting this tournament, are you affiliated with the LAN center in anyway? Cause I don't see how signing up in this thread is going to work

The LAN center is aware of this thread. They will get better awareness of competitors expected to be at the LAN and also a preliminary bracket could be created.

Nope you can even register when you show up, but preferably not. We want to create some brackets and get a rough estimate ahead of time. That is why I would like people to register here as well.
On November 08 2010 14:53 Kraznaya wrote: How will players be seeded? Will there be a group stage before we go into double elimination brackets?
We're still thinking how and if seeding will be done. However as of right now the only thing to go by is battle.net ladder points. In the future however we will start doing seeding like how MLG do their seeding (based upon previous tournament placement.)
There will be no group stages because how many complaints people had last tournament. We will go straight into double elimination.
I'm also willing to do some shoutcasting after I get knocked out (or for other games while I'm sitting out), I have some (limited) experience doing it.
I have a few suggestions, as I was at the last tourney at this location.
The sun. You will want better blinds/ a way to make the windows opaque in the afternoon/ evening. A cheap and easy way is to cover them with aluminum foil.
Visible brackets. A whiteboard would do the trick.
Lights. For much of the evening, it was pitch dark in there. Need to find a happy medium.
Replays. Request/Require the winner of the match to save the replays with basic replay info. (qxc.vs.darrenc.game3). This will make it way easier to release a replay pack afterwards and drum up interest.
There's a big-ass TV there. Would be sweet if there was a game being shown on it, assuming the players couldn't see it (positioning/curtain/other). If there will be casting, figure out ahead of time how to deal with players being able to overhear the casters. Add some chairs and you have an actual spectating area. Would be nice for those of us coming that are just donating money to the top 8.
If you have the manpower, a small side tourney for spectators and those knocked out of the main tourney could be fun. I'd be willing to donate a case or two for prizes on something like that.

Looking forward to the event!
I just got off the phone with the owner, and told him the suggestions. He's probably going to go frabic for the blinds and as for visible brackets we'll be using one of the big screens. We will add a bit more lighting.
Also we did show the final games on the big screen last time. =]
As for shoutcasting we're coming up with a sound proof way in order for shoutcasters to do their jobs without disturbing the players. However we'll probably hold of the shoutcasting until later on in the tournament maybe top 16 or top 8.

Look forward to meeting new people and getting some good games in even though I don't expect to get far in the tournament .
EDIT: Actually I'm tentative because I don't know my work schedule until a week before the event starts. I'll make sure to repost when I'm sure about my work schedule.
On November 09 2010 13:39 emc wrote: I'm not sure if I can make it, but do I have to register pre-event? or can I just show up at the door and play?
You don't necessarily need to pre-register, but to get a rough estimate pre-registration would be nice. We need to know exactly what the tournament format will be. It might change if we get too many people.

I was the MLG admin that help ran things last time and was planning to organize a LAN about 20 mins away from this location in the near future (with prizes from Intel and sponsored cash). I've had to run 2 MLGs and attended BlizzCon, so I've been slow on setting my event up. But, I'll still come and chill... Hopefully it isn't a sauna in there this time. :D
I like the format for Losers being BO1, although, running a 64 player tournament 1 in day will still be a huge hassle. I remember there being a room off to the side that wasn't being used, is that where people are planning to setup BYOCs?
Also, mention this to the local CSL teams (UCI, UCR, UCSD, USC, etc). UCSD talked to me about coming if the event was planned properly (Xeris, Kvz, Cheese, etc...)

hey =]. ya this time we'll have more computers and many more things planned. Also we'll have one person in the front the whole time with brackets up on a screen so no one is ever confused. We will also get blinds so no more glare. As for UCSD people they're welcome to come.
uh... i am 1300 something diamond... when highest diamond player was at 1800s.. i have not played in 4 month or so... will i still be qualified as diamond? i do not know how much players/strategies have improved

sure i guess it would still consider you diamond, but we don't have any requirements so just put w/e down it's just a heads up on the players we will be seeing at the tournament

Going to be good to show up for another starcraft Tournament at PC arena though one question I have is will there be group stages like Last tournament or just big bracket?

for the sake of time, we're going to be using just one big bracket with double elimination like our first pc arena tournament.

That's incredibly optimistic, I would highly doubt that would even be past the first 2-3 rounds of the winner's bracket based on how many names I've seen here.

o yes... it's going to be much longer than 4:30 unless u get knocked out fairly early. We're hoping to def. finish before 11p.m.
But the internet cafe can charge $15 for an event-length computer time usage fee and sponsor the tournament with $10 for every participant that enters. /sarcasm

Do you know what size and resolution the monitors are? Even better would be a make and model #. Biggest difference for me in using another computer is the screen (assuming I bring my own peripherals)

i'm sure it's somethign along the lines of appartment 1, so i wouldn't include that in the actual address. it'll just considered building 1 in the shopping center/pavillion or w/e it may be
Any updates? Why didn't the host manager make the brackets online like on challonge.com, I got called into work and I really wanted to attend or at least follow the tourney from my iPhone TL app (can't watch the stream). :[
Fun event everything went quite smooth 64+ person tourney in 1 day just wish I performer better. Congrats to whoever wins. Kevin send me a pm when u start planning the next event
Hey Funk, what was your problem man? Why couldn't you have let a girl play for free? Was it really necessary for you to charge her $15 to lose three 9min games?

Asshole.
yea girl shouldve played for free since she only had like 3 days of pratice i think or something liek that i think haha
What's the difference between a girl losing 3, 9 minute games vs a guy losing 3, 9 minute games? There were couple guys that were bronze that payed 15$ for just the experience. Now with your reasoning should i just let everyone who is going to lose 3 games for sure join the tournament for free?
If your able to give me a reasonable response, without critising me, than i'll let girls play for free in all our future tournaments.

Seriously? It was a tournament. What do you expect. Im sure anyone at the center would of been willing to play a few rounds with her. If anything you being her intelligent male counterpart should of had the forethought to NOT have her participate in something that she'd have no chance at winning.

Suggestions for future tournaments at this location:
1. CHAIRS FOR SPECTATORS!!!!!! I would have stayed longer if there were chairs.
2. Better setup arrangement so spectators can watch the casts being done, and maybe even hear them.
3. Maybe have a whiteboard or large sign up with the brackets on it. The people running the thing did their best, but when 30 people are talking, it is hard to hear them calling out who is playing next.
The tournament was a lot of fun. Thanks to Kevin for inviting me out to cast the tournaments. My voice is still trying to recover now...
Once my voice recovers I will recast some of the other "Stage" matches in the later rounds. The livestream video cut off after 5 hours. The finals were simply awesome to watch and fun to cast.
Thanks for putting on the turny. Crota you did an epic job. I look forward to watching more of your streams.
Maybe next time have a seperate free no prize turny for the women / bronze players and everyone else participates in the other turny.. Might be a little more work but from what I could tell there was only 4-6 or so people that fit in that. So it wouldn't be to bad. If they would like to participate in the buy in and opt out of this turny then allow them to.
Just a suggestion.
Added more:
The staff was cool, and there was a lot of cool people to meet as well. I look forward to attending the next event and maybe wining a map :p

1) Dude... I'm not gonna fill up this place with chairs for spectators. The place is small enough to the point where it's cramped for the players to navigate around as is... much less add "fire hazards" for them to avoid.
2) Yes, there are big TVs here, but I can't have them all showing matches with the actual participants able to see. I have to prioritize the competitors over spectators. Everyone being able to hear the caster is worse for the competitors. As far as the actual setups go, I wasn't expecting as many people to bring their computers... so I did the best I could with accommodations.
3) When you have a lot of people in a small area it's gonna get hectic regardless of the preparations. You'll need some sort of P.A. system to override the noise... ... ... hmm... which shouldn't be a problem next time...
Anyway, I thank everyone for coming out... I know you all were in awe from my anti-sun shield.
Time to start thinkin' up of something for the next jpg banner Probably not gonna use FunkMunk again... he didn't seem to be as embarrassed as I hoped.
was a lot of fun. Whoever is complaining about the girl having to pay 15 dollars is pathetic. If its that big of a deal you would have just payed the $15 dollars for her. I'm all for females in sc2 but I think they should be respected the same way as any guy. That goes both ways if she is good give her credit, just like you would any other player. If she isn't so good well she probably shouldn't play in tournaments that cost money unless she thinks $15 dollars is the worth the entertainment of the event.

what? nobody should get to play for free..
vagina =/= free pass

the place is already packed no need to cram the place more with free entries..
