------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
PROGRESSION: This tournament will consist of four rounds, with no third place round.
After each game, players must send the scores to RVRstarcraft@gmail.com. Once both opponents have done so, the brackets will be updated. ONLY replays from the semi-finals and finals need to be attached to the e-mail.
Title the Subject Line "Winner > Loser RoXX.X" For example, in the Ro8, Team might win Game 3 against Liquid, sending the email titled "Team > Liquid Ro8.3"
If an opponent does not submit the score within five minutes of his opponent's submission, he does not get a chance to confirm the results.
A Note on Observation: Casters must be allowed to observe any game they choose. If other members are observing the same game the casters are in, the members must limit their spectator talk. In all other games, both players get to decide whether to allow observers or not. There can be no selecting of observers; if observation is agreed upon, anyone is allowed to watch the match.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
MAP-POOL: The map-pool for this tournament will consist of all official 1v1 ladder maps. After a match, losers get to pick the next map. The winners, however, have a chance to veto a map before the loser picks.
Ro32: (Bo1) Lost Temple Ro16: (Bo3) Scrap Station -> Loser's pick -> Loser's pick Ro8: (Bo3) Delta Quadrant -> Loser's pick -> Loser's pick Semi-Finals: (Bo3) Xel'Naga Caverns -> Loser's pick -> Loser's pick Finals: (Bo5) Metalopolis -> Loser's pick -> Loser's pick -> Loser's pick -> Loser's pick
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS: Please read this section CAREFULLY!
Upon the start of the tournament, you must: - Be in the Gold, Silver, or Bronze leagues. - Have played at least 25 1v1 ladder matches. - Frequent TeamLiquid. - Have not been relegated from a higher division into G, S, or B in the past week. - Provide your TLID, B.net 2.0 name, number, race, and league in the following manner: "Karliath (RiveR.469) P Platinum."
Players who are listed under Temporary Reservation still MUST register normally in this thread. This will confirm your registration.
Notice: It is the contestants' responsibility before each round to ensure that the first 4 points above are kept by their opponents. If a contestant is in violation of the rules, contact me.
IMPORTANT: A PM will be sent through TL 27 hours before the tournament begins. You will have 24 hours to reply to the PM, confirming your registration. If you do not reply within the given time, you will be dropped.
Anyone who was a "no-show" for the previous tournament cannot register for this tournament. Please pay more respect to the players, the casters, and I in the future. Gunz is the only exception, as his absence was my fault.

Overall, just stay tuned and follow this thread.

So, I'm assuming, if by some stroke of luck (or unluck, in this case? :p) those of us registered ascend to platinum between now and then, we will no longer be eligible, right? I've been fighting in hopes of getting into plat, and who knows, not that I'm too cocky, but now I'm worried if I'd be better off not league playing, yet I don't want to become out of practice...
Eh, meh, what happens, happens, I guess.

Out of fairness for the players, I would prefer that no platinum players enter. To be honest, the people who will win this tournament are on the verge of promotion. However, the less "actually promoted" players there are, the better this tournament will be, as an experience, for lower league players.
This is something I am struggling with. See also that Somebody, the winner of the last tournament, has been seeded into this tournament. He is now a platinum player. However, the "prize" for the last tournament was seed into this one, so I'm not sure what to do about it.

I'm sorry about the late PMs :\
I just realized that I had scheduled the PMs to be sent at 7 am, which definitely wouldn't have worked for me. >< I'll be sending them now.

Yeah, definitely would like to cast a ton of games. Possibly all the Rising Cup ones. We'll be posting a preview of what we kind of do soon? Maybe, all our previous casts got corrupt though, so we'd have to do another one.
Anyway, good news about the PMs! :D

I have no objection to having additional casters. However, Ipp and FaZe will be serving as the official casters, and will be the only ones with "casters' rights." Feel free to cast for players if you'd like, as it would definitely be fun for them to rewatch their own games. I would suggest that you cast games that are not being casted at the same time by RQTV, however. It would be best if you could follow a person, but that's up to you.

They will be posted after the confirmation deadline. Ideally, this will be e hours before the tournament. I understand that you can't add your Ro32 opponent at the moment.

i would love for my games to be casted

We can probably just get some games and cast them afterwards for out channel. We're accepting replays whenever. Our motto is kind of "Newbs helping/casting newbs" so it works well. I'll probably post a thread for it in a bit.

I second the question of L1F3, It's getting pretty close to the tournament. Also, if possible, could we please get it at least 2 hours before start time?

Anyone who wants to cast mine, great. I'm going to also save my replays, win or lose, so if someone would like to cast after the game is over (i.e., because games in parallel bracket spots are likely happening simultaneously), or during if that be the case, I'd be happy to cooperate.

Thank you once again Karliath for holding this tournament. It was so much fun.
|
great tourney. after obs the finals i would suggest making the map pool single elimination or something like that. that way we dont get the same 2 maps for all the games.
|
Looks like I missed out on an exciting tournament. How come I didn't get anything for winning last time except not being able to participate in this one
|
So who won? Replays for the finals anywhere? :D
|
I wonder... Maybe we could have a plat/diamond cup of previous rising cup (bronze thrugold) players, a "Risen Cup". Idk... And those who've done a rising cup in the past, but are still gold, have they truly "risen", and would it really be that big of a deal to let them compete again? :/
But yeah, I would like a replay pack of the finals, and preferably the tvt epic ever-matches that held us up as well. (and to Mission and Dishong, I apologize for my comp BSoD'ing 2x, and I understand completely why I was not able to be allowed to continue observing, due to the delay of game it caused.)
Furthermore, perhaps a losers bracket with a bracket build towards a 3rd and 4th place game might be nice for the players who lost in round1 to the best of 1 setup, or maybe considering making round1 a bo3. I won my first round, but I still thought it was a bit scary of a setup. Furthermore, maybe considering allowing the games to go multiple nights so we're not up till 2am+...
In any case, gj Karliath, and Crazy Cow, and IPP, thank you all for this amazing oppurtunity for fun.
And Paprika, for results: + Show Spoiler +

Thanks Karliath for the great tourney! the one suggestion/request i have is the make the Ro32 Bo3. The first game i played was being streamed to like 50+ people and my hands were literally shaking :p, nerves got the best of me and was out before i even knew it .
Also i think maybe we could split the tourney over two nights, and try to at least have the finals casted to add to the "epicness".
|
Duncan, no worries. Thank god it was right before I was about to move in when you DCed XD My throat was really dry too so I was able to drink the orange juice I had next to me :-)
And about the time thing, as much I would like it to be two nights with the number of no-shows Karliath had to deal with, I wouldn't want him to have to deal with them for a second day. Sure it's later in the tournament which gives players more incentive to show up, but no-shows happen and to have it last two days would be hard on Karliath.
But being up until 4AM my brain was so fried I had to ask Karliath if I won game 5.
|
Congrats dishong! Glad I lost to the winner.
As for the tourney, a BO3 in the first round would be a great idea, just so people can get over some nerves.
Also, I'd like to receive any "epic" games for our cast if anyone would like to send them. Thanks! Im really looking forward to the next one.
|
Thank you for hosting this thing, I think this is an awesome experience!
I think the first round should be a Bo3 to just for if the person is new to the tournament or is extremely nervous. It's a shame getting knocked out for a nerve mistake.
|
I had a lot of fun in this.
I won my first round, but I had a lot of nerves before it too. I think round 1 being a BO1 gives an advantage to people who have done it before.
The only issue is time, because it went so late, it might be necessary too make round 1 a BO1 to deal with this.
Anyway, I will definitely do this again if I am not plat by then.
Shame there are not many plat tournaments, even compared to gold tournaments.
|
I'd still really like to see the replays from the finals. :o
|
Thanks for the tournament, I had a great time in this tournament, ultimately ending at the semifinals.
I don't know if it's possible to start this tournament a little sooner because for those of us on the east coast, we have to stay up very late to play in the later rounds.
Also, my situation may be very isolated and I doubt it can be really be accommodated for, but every match I played in this tournament was a ZvZ, which made me sad.

Would you still like to cast the games? :O I'm not sure about all the other games, but I definitely want the finals to be casted. If you want to do it, I won't have to

The thing with making the first round a Bo3 is that the whole thing will take too long. In addition, if there are no shows, it's much "cleaner" to give people with no opponents a bye with a Bo1, than it is when it is with a Bo3. It's less of a wait for them, and I feel better for letting someone through for skipping 1 game, as opposed to a possible 3. Most tournaments I know start with a Bo1.

Yeah, definitely. I hadn't even thought about that.

The first tournament was meant to be a test run only. Also, you can't participate in this one not because you won the last one, but because you are in platinum now.

D1s0ng won, as can be seen in the brackets. The finals will hopefully be casted, sometime.

I do intend to make a RISEN Cup, but that will be a long long time in the future. In addition, making sure that everyone attends will be a bit of a hassle, but we'll see.
I don't want the same person to keep wining the money over and over again. To set a limit, this makes it easier.
I don't think I'd be able to handle multiple nights The only way I could do it is two Saturdays. But that seems too drawn out, imo. Still, at least the casters would get to cast everything.

The last tournament had 200 viewers (the stream was actually posted on TL), and the finals were casted. This time, the amount of no shows really slowed down the whole process.

In order to deal with the multiple night, Bo1, etc. thing:
Lol, I know what. Are you all familiar with Quantum Computing? It's arguably the best answer to the problem of a amximum limit to minimization of computing, thus creating the problem of a maximum processing speed. For instance, you can't practically make something smaller than an atom, well, under today's understanding of physics. So, there is a lower limit to size, thus creating a maximum limit to processing speed. (E.g., we may be only be able to compute things at 1 exabyte per second, and no faster ((kilo, mega, giga, tera, peta, exa, etc.)), and I pulled that number out of my ass, not necessarily the reality of things, just a best guess of mine.)
Essentially, rather than taking the time to do several sequential "if this, then that" statements, all possible "if this's" are done simulataneously. Afterwards, a search algorithm picks the appropriate string of if then statements, following them to their logical end, thus very quickly coming to an answer via parallel processing.
I think it would be interesting to do every possible combo of "if so-and-so wins that round, and I win over here, we'd play against each other, and since our first competitors are still in a game or were no shows, we'll go ahead and play, and if it so turns out that we eventually do meet each other, the victor has already been determined."
Furthermore, this would require blindness to the brackets, otherwise we may be like, "Well I lost to Bob in what would have been the final, so why try in the bracket beneath that which would determine if I would haveeven faced Bob to begin with?"
Perhaps with such a Quantum setup, we could also allow for a winner to be determined more along the lines of an algorithm based upon wins and losses, and against whom, and how they do against others, thus determining who gets to go to the, "SC2 Superbowl," so to speak. Idk, it might be fun to have a seasonal setup, over multiple days/weeks, allowing for games to be saved and casted while replayed over the interim days between "game nights".
Just some thoughts.
And yes, I am insane. :D

I'm quoting all of us, by the way, not just the last guy :p
Well, hmm... that might be interesting to organize, and I think I could... However, the problem is that I don't know any casters, nor do I have websites for hosting streams, etc. It would have to be a $0 budget on my part as well, but perhaps flowandebb via hybridflow starcraft might be able to cast and post replays? I was thinking each week, over the course of the season, every player faces off against another player, in a Bo3, that goes towards their overall season ranking, but without being eliminated right off the bat. And maybe the 2 best or 6 best or whatever could go to a "playoffs" or "finals" sort of game to determine the winner.
Post requesting flowandebb to do the above: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=152364¤tpage=3
His(I'm assuming his, or is it her? :p ) site: http://www.youtube.com/user/HybridFlowStarcraft
Another thing, we would need to consider a prize, if we need one. At this point, it would simply be a "Gj! You won!" sort of thing, but who knows, maybe we could all donate a $1 as an entrance fee to a paypal account, and the winner gets, say, 50% of the pool deposited into their account, 2nd place 25%, 3rd and 4th 12.5% each? Idk... But I'm not willing or able to front all the money.
It could be fun though...
Edit: Also, any suggestions for what we could call it? Perhaps the name of it could give some credit to HybridFlow's site, if indeed he/she agrees.

I have $9.90 left in the my "SC paypal," which I guess I could contribute to this tournament. I don't want to pay $9 if everyone else is paying $1 each though . It was meant to be for the next RISING Cup anyways, but to be honest, I don't think the RISING Cup needs a prize...
But yeah, I would definitely love to play in this league haha. I'd host it too, but I have no idea how to do so. Gl!

Okay, so I've been fleshing out some ideas:
Say we have 30 players. Well, we make 2 divisions, 15 players each, and everyone plays 1 round (Bo1, Bo3?) against each player in their division, for a total of 14 rounds played per player (assuming no one drops out for whatever reason, but in that case perhaps we can do "byes", or maybe recalibrate the game lineup), thus making for a 14week season.
Now, at the end of the season, the top 8 players from each division go into the playoffs, but first ranked 1 to 8, based on points from the season, determined by 3points for winning a round, 1 point for a tie, 0 for a loss. Ties are probably too hard to come by in reality, but who knows, maybe some game will have all things mined out, and no units, not even workers to kill off the other base...
So, number of points determines seating in the playoffs. For tie-breakers, I'm open to suggestions, maybe we can look at number of games won per round. Or, maybe in a 2-way tie, say bob and jim both won 10 rounds for 30 points, but in the league game of bob vs jim, bob won, so bob gets the higher seat that bob and jim are tied for (say they're tied for 3rd and 4th, bob gets 3rd, jim 4th). In a 3-way tie, say, bob beat jim, jim beat sally, but sally beat bob, idk what to do with that yet... A suggestion was to look at the number of points they have on their ladder in the SC2 system? (Since I may be 5th on my gold ladder, but someone else may be 2nd, yet due to their ladder being easier, they only have 700 points while I have 750 in mine, even though i'm 5th in my ladder...)
Anywho, once seating is determined, the playoffs will be set as the following, and so as to reward people who did better in the season games, they'll have an easier path to the finals, to discourage "good enough to get into the playoffs" as the only season goal (notice #1 plays #8, 2 plays 7, etc, and notice also 1 and 2 are far enough apart that they wont face each other until their division finals, assuming no upsets):
Division A.............................................................................................................Division B #1--|.........................................................................................................................|--#1 ......|------|........................................................................................................|------ | #8--|.......|........................................................................................................|........|--#8 ..............|-----|.........................................................................................|------| #4--|.......|......|..........................................................................................|......|........|--#4 ......|------|......|..........................................................................................|......|------| #5--|..............|-------------------------------------..............................................|...............|--#5 .....................|............................................---------------------------------------| #3--|..............|..........................................................................................|...............|--#3 ......|------|......|..........................................................................................|......|------ | #6--|.......|......|..........................................................................................|......|........|--#6 ..............|------..........................................................................................|-----| #2--|.......|........................................................................................................|........|--#2 ......|------|........................................................................................................|------| #7--|.........................................................................................................................|--#7
(phew, all those dots, dashes, and "such that" symbols were tough. )
Now, I haven't decided yet, but maybe the season games can be Bo1, Bo3, idk, and for the playoffs, bo1 or bo3, again, no decision made yet. Not sure if we need an epic bo5 final game though :p Also, a non-SC2 player friendwho gave me this bracket setup from NCAA I think it was (I'm not a sports guy like he is), suggested calling the divisions, Division Geek, and Division Nerd, rather than A and B. lmao
Furthermore, I'd like the playoffs and finals to be over several days, such that we can all get our sleep.
And finally, I'm hoping to play in this, as well, and thus my setting it up before hand so as not to cause any suspisions of me stacking odds in my favor. For instance, in Karliath's Rising Cup, had he played, in theory he could have given himself lots of bronze players at first, thus stacking the odds. In my setup, all is predetermined based on the outcome of season games, where we all play each other in our divisions. Given, I could make all the gold go over to the other division and be the only gold in my division, but I'll do it randomly, I promise. And one last thing, I'm still waiting on a response from flowandebbto cast replays during the week as they're uploaded.
And I almost forgot, there was talk of prize money. Maybe all 30 players out a buck into a paypal account, for a pool of $30 US. Then, the 1st place gets 50%, $15, then 2nd 25% 7.50, and 3rd and 4th 12.75% each, $3.75. Idk, it's whatever, not that I need a prize to play, but some might... Any suggestions?

Do you think we can get 30 dedicated players to play? Personally, I am very interested, but I can only play at night and stuff, with parents and ahh asfdih;asf. Just saying, I might DC at random moments.
Also, the brackets seem pretty American to me, if you'll excuse me My main gripe with it is that you only get to play against half the players.
What if we just adopt the pro-league method, or something similar to it?
You play against every opponent twice. The person in first place is seeded into the final, the person in second place is seeded into the semi-final, and then we have a few options:
A) Third place is seeded into the quarter final, fourth and fifth play for a quarter final spot. B) Third, Fourth, Fifth, and Sixth round robin for semi-final spot, or two quarter-final spots. C) Third and Fourth are seeded into the quarter finals.
.......________(WIN)________............... ....(1st)........................_____|____....... ...............................(2nd).......___|___.. ...........................................(?)........(?)
|
Actually, the method I listed above would take way too long. It would be much easier with 15 players. That said, the prize pool goes down, and it cancels my initial point of playing against more people.
Idk then

The feeling i got toward this is that this would almost be like a league, with its own regular season and playoffs. In which case i like the idea of the season being a long one. For example every monday Duncan posts the oppenets for the week, you have the entire week to contact your oppenet, play your matches and send replays and scores to duncan. This way players can we really start to get to know each other play styles, in hope more stratgey can be used. "im going to use this build order to counter RiveRs favourite build order" These are just some of my thoughts, definatly VERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRY interested in this

tbh I think >15 is already too much. I would like the league to be "tight," so that if there's any need to reschedule, discuss about things, etc, there won't be people out there totally lost and clueless as to what's going on. Do you know what I mean? Even as low as ten would work out just fine; well, with my brackets anyways. There would be 5 games a week, with each player getting 18 total games, and weeks of play, before the playoffs.
Edit: Also, the schedule for all the weeks should be randomized and posted by the beginning of the tournament. That's how it works for every other sport, right?
One big concern I have is that I want to know the person I am playing against, you know what I mean? I don't want a huge league where I may get cheesed by an unknown, or get beaten by just weird weird stuff. Having a smaller player pool would help this. Or, we could have group practice sessions. This may seem counter-productive for those that want to win, but if everyone does it, it should be fair.
I mean think about it. Would you rather be rushed by a guy on ladder you have no idea who it is, or would you rather get rushed in a controlled setting where you know your opponent? I hope that makes sense...
|
I think cutting it down in size might be a wise idea. To 20 perhaps? 15? I'd probably be able to bring in some of my friends, like lJJl, or others.
Anyway, as long as I can still participate in the league, hybrid and I would definitely love casting. Any ideas for names?

I just wanted to say any tournament you are planning on doing again I would love to be apart of again.

Will there be 3d cup ? and if so - when are you planing it ? If i would be still at gold , would love to be a part of .

I can't guarantee lJJl (L's by the way). I'll ask him though. He might be a bit busy with Reach though...

Hey i have a friend who would like to be apart of it, and is some one we can reply on. His name is Rtomas just to put him in

No!!! Don't watch it! It was an imposter Duncan who lost to Hayako! It wasn't me!! lol jk go ahead... :p
Yeah, lets agree on a name, and I'll start a new thread, and then post a link to it in a reply to this thread. Any suggestions?
Maybe the Rising League? Idk...
And if someone could make a super awesome banner, they'll get props.

The next RISING Cup will be in 2-4 weeks, assuming that I don't get bogged down by this new league stuff. If you want to join the league, stay tuned, and be prepared to play matches once a week, as well as group practice games.

Unless you have all the details ready, I highly advise against making the official thread. It's frowned upon. I made a blog thread "Gold League Tournament?" and then a tournament thread "Gold League Tournament!" before everything was set up for me to make "[Gold] RISING Cup #1." Just some advice. Perhaps start with a blog post too?

so im guessing this tourney is again going to be gold and under, duncan even told me that earlier today. One concern i have about that is since its going to be a longer league type format, we do have the possiblity of some of our gold players being promoted to plat. Personally i think the "rule" should be if you are gold before the season starts, you can join. after that it dosent matter if you get promoted you can still play, does this seem fair?

Sure, as long as you don't get promoted to diamond . Meh, does this mean I can't ladder now?

Meh, i say if your game imporves throughout the season, so be it, plat, diamond, etc.
Maybe we'll all become better players through the thick of it

haha ok. I'll be plat again in < 2 weeks. Well, it depends on how much I get to play.

I can make a banner for this, and I personally think Rising League is a great name. Gold is a good restriction and as long as they're gold when the "season" starts then they're fine. If they move up to plat they should be replaced in the next tournament though.

Okay, so so far we have:
DuncanIdaho Karliath FlowandEbb Hybrid Hayako RTomas Chris Sevryn Fluffy1? (not sure if he's interested in just the cups or the league as well) razamanaz? (again, may be interested in just cups, not sure) LJJL? (not sure if he's in or out)
And of course, anyone in the previous Rising Cup who's interested, you're more than welcome to join. Thanks FandE for the banner/castings support, that will be awesome. Also, on second though, I agree, I now think 30 might be too big. If we keep it small, maybe everyone can learn each other's styles, and get to play everyone, rather than the division separation. I just thought that divisions would be necessary for lots of people, in order to keep this from going on for years :p See, I originally assumed since 32 were in the cup we could get all of them minus the noshow-dropouts from the cup interested, but perhaps that was a bit too optimistic, for I bet they would have responded by now if they were.
Also, Hayako pointed out an obvious miscalculation on my part. we need an even number of players or else not everyone will get a game each week. See, I was thinking, 15 people, that means each person plays 14 games (against the 14 other people), and yay! Sounds good! math fail... And I'm a statistician, too...
:p

0. Other then the fact that 14 is an ugly number.

I would be interested in this Gold league. It sounds like a lot of fun. Since I won't be able to play in the next Gold rising cup even though I didn't win.

Updated. As for format, maybe we can just do the top 8 seed into their appropriate seats, lined up as I had them, just without the two divisions. And how many games per week do we want to do, one bo3 against one opponent, or two opponents? It's whatever...

We're going have to get a lot more specific.
Your format doesn't really have seeds though. Unless, of course, you mean that the top 8 (half of the group) basically enter into a quarter-final stage of a "tournament" or something.
Honestly, I think this would give too little benefit for the person in first place, when you consider the fact that the person who is worse than half the league receives the same benefit.
--
I would prefer one bo3 per week, with 3 points being awarded for a win, 1 for a tie (unlikely), and 0 for a loss. I think people should play each opponent twice, making it a total of 30 sets per player before the playoffs. Also, I think the number of games won, lost, and the difference between the two should be recorded. That way, when people have the same points in the league, we can give the person who has a higher win-lose difference the higher position.
--
1. RISING is in all caps. 2. Perhaps we should each make a really short personal profile for fun. Like, have a picture, and then a paragraph description about ourselves, and our starcraft experience. 3. I still prefer the BPL mixed with the Pro-League format for a league. 4. The schedule (who plays who which week) should be formed before the start of the league. 5. We can leave prize-pool talk until later, but we shouldn't cast it away.
|
I thought the plan was to do a regular season as RiveR with similar format that RiveR has said above, than after the season how even the ranking look determin the spots going into the play offs?

Yeah, it's AdSense. My computer auto corrected evilly. AdSense can work very well for making money, if you get visitors to your website. Basically, I would make a new joint account for it, email and everything, and all admins would get the email and password.

![[image loading]](http://img824.imageshack.us/img824/928/risingleague.jpg)
Hmmm... Interesting idea, Lif3... Since you know about this, if you could set up the website that would be awesome. I'm assuming the AdSense will give us money for a prize pool if enough people traffic the site/click on ads?
And Flow, tyvm, that banner is awesome. Especially since we may "rise" to platinum, which has an eagle in the symbol.
So to recap: RISING League Lineup:
1 DuncanIdaho.554 Z gold 2 Karliath (River.469) P gold 3 FlowandEbb.249 Z bronze 4 L1f3 (Hybrid.663) P Silver 5 Hayako.686 T gold 6 Rtomas.763 race? league? 7 Chris.2359 P gold 8 Sevryn (nyrves.299) P gold 9 Fluffy1 (Fluffy.374) P Bronze 10 bamis300 (momo.350) 11 Ellisandre.511 T bronze 12 holyspear (reallyangry.948) 13 Mission.867 Z gold 14 PointyBagels.761 P gold
Zerg=3 players, Terran=2 players, Protoss=6 players, Undecided yet=3 players.
(I hope the undecideds aren't protoss, seems we're pretty loaded thus far for that race. If any more random, terran, or zerg players want in who are not in already, I might consider you, but I'd say we have enough protoss, and if any of you toss players wanted to change, that would be awesome, though I don't expect you to, of course.)
*Note: There are a few people on the list which I don't have race/league info, if you could post it that would be awesome, otherwise I'll have to assume whatever your "most-played" race is according to your sc2 in-game profile, will be your race, and if any of you wish to change your race before the season starts, NOW IS THE TIME TO TELL ME, and random is allowed as your league race of preference, meaning you must choose random each game of every round you play, not say, I think I'll play toss today, since my opponent is such and such...*
Furthermore, If I could get a really short personal profile from everyone, as in a picture, and then a paragraph description about yourself and your starcraft experience, I'll incorporate it into the thread post. I'd prefer a "real life" photo, but if you don't want everyone knowing you're a fat man with a third eye-ball, I'll understand, lol, but I will ask that I get some photo I can insert. Furthermore, I don't want som 12 megapixel photo that takes the better half of a century to load, preferably something that could fill up a space about this size in the thread:
.......................................................... .......................................................... .......................................................... .......................................................... .......................................................... .......................................................... .......................................................... .......................................................... .......................................................... .......................................................... .......................................................... .......................................................... .......................................................... ..........................................................
Also, I removed 15 and 16 due to non-response about interest in joining the league.
So, 14 players, each player plays the other 13 players in a Bo3 per week, thus that's 13 weeks. If we begin next week, that will make the season last through Sat 12/18, and then the playoff/finals would be over the next week, which is coming up on Christmas break for any who observe the holiday (We're Atheists, but my family observes it anyways, at least the Santa Claus part of it minus all the nativity stuff, lol, but it's mostly for the kids), so perhaps it can be postponed until after the new year, which I don't have a problem with, unless we find a way to cram more games throughout the weeks and do the finals before Christmas...
Karliath made an excellent point that with so few players, it seems odd that half would get into the finals, making the season almost pointless, so I'm thinking the top 4 get into it. #1 plays #4, so as to reward #1 and make the season games that much more critical, and #2 and #3 play each other, and finally the winners of both will square off in the finals. Perhaps we can divide any money pool amongst those players, with 1st place getting 50%, 2nd getting 25%, and the other two who made it there but didnt win their semi finals round 12.5% each. I'm not too concerned about cash, but it's always fun, and it may give you some leverage when attempting to convince wives/moms/etc. to let you participate. (It helped to convince my wife to be cool about me staying up that night for the Rising Cup #2, "But honey, I could win $10!" lol. Not that I needed her permission, of course, but yeah... You know how wives can get about video games, I'm sure...)
I'm thinking if we do this, we could make it into 2 nights, with a Bo5 for all 3 of the final matches.
If everyone's on board with this, I'll go ahead and make a new thread soon, announcing this and if we can get this AdSense in the works before we start, i.e. post a link to it in the thread announcing this, that would be really awesome for getting more clicks on the site.
All aboard?

I would prefer each player to play an opponent twice in the season.
|
Looks good to me but yea maybe we can do 2 bo3 a week that way we get to face everyone twice and we get to play more games i know some people have real life and stuff (college here) but 6 games a week is far less than i play anyway

Agreed. 2 Bo3's per week, against each opponent 2x during the course of the season, but you wont face the same opponent 2x in a week.

I agree with Sevryn on two Bo3's a week. I know I can do at least two a week no problem. I would like to face someone more than once. That way if I lose the first time I can see if I improved the next time we face each other.

One slight issue, week 7 is funky. Everyone plays 2 Bo3's against the same person. Since there is an odd number of weeks, this was unavoidable (unless I'm missing something?). From my line of thought, I can't switch them around either while still allowing everyone to play exactly 2 rounds per week. I found a few ways to prevent us from doubling up on week 7, but it would require some to play 3 rounds on week 7, others just 1, and vice versa for the weeks I swapped games with. I don't care how we do it, whether leave it alone (which will cause us to play against the same person twice), or swap things (which will cause a dispproportionate number of games per week), but I thought I'd point that out. I dislike having to play the same person twice, but then I'd also dislike having to play 3 rounds one week and only 1 the other week. I just see no good remedy for that. Otherwise, I think we're set.

Yeah, funny how that worked out, as we were overloaded with Zerg in the Rising Cup#2. I wonder what the race proportions were in Rising Cup#1? Unfortunately, I was unaware of its existence at the time, and thus did not compete.

This would definitely work, but I just wanted to show my support for the pro-league method. It gives more of an advantage to those who place top of the league (1st v 2nd v 3rd v 4th). I think the person in fourth place knocking out the person in first place right at the beginning is kind of meh. With this method, 4th place will have to win two games instead of one to get to the finals.

- Can HybridFlow cast the games (maybe one a week, making sure everyone gets covered eventually)? - Do we have an official thread/website up? - Can we start our weeks on Mondays? I think it would be easier for people to reschedule say, from a saturday to sunday the next day. If that makes sense. Grouping the weekend together just seems right. - I will make a schedule with what DuncanIdaho provided, but with names. - Everyone go work on their profiles!

I was actually going to ask about what the plan was for casting? One set up a week or try to find some more casters.
And then are the matches going to be scheduled or if for some chance someone can't make the schedule time they can reschedule within the week? as long as they play it before next league week.
Also I like the final set up you have. It would be a real shocker if player 4 beats out player one, and then it would be lame for player 4 to pretty much auto-lose(maybe) against player one, so I think that way is more fair for everyone but that's just my opinion.

get some bunkers up get a few crawlers up and queens to transfuse either 4 gate yourself or 2 gate forge defend the push, collect your win because 4gate is a pretty all inish build and you can just take expos and outmacro
|
Karliath, for week 1 round 1 in your template, I believe you are missing a game, as there are 14 participants but only 12 listed.
1 of those that is not listed is me...
It appears to be a game between Ellisandre and me.
|
So apparently the website will probably be freewebs. But ah well, still good for organization and such.
ZvP is my worst match-up too. I'm a little screwed for this tournament. I'll be surprised if I win a single game.

PlusMinus and Gabeski, I think we already have our lineup for the Rising League, but I'll be happy to make you two the first alternates if anyone drops out. I'll be sending conformations soon, to all of the players, after posting about it first. If anyone doesn't respond within 48 hours of me sending it out, +- gets the first slot, Gabeski the 2nd. Edit: And Gemini is 3rd alternate, etc...
And Karliath, I finally understand the idea you put forth. When you first posted it I had no idea what the hell you were 4th and 3rd square off, then the winner plays 2nd, and then that winner plays 1st. You know, I think I like that better, and it allows for observing the games in the finals... Let's do that instead.
|

Can you ask everyone to briefly lay out when they are available for games? Then, compile it all together so that we can get some sort of idea before talking to your opponents each week. Oh, and we should use one time zone (for this listing, at least) to make it easier for everyone.
|
And by the way, yes. Hybrid and I can most definitely cast.
Edit: As many games as possible also. So whenever we're available basically.
|
Also I think player's should schedule when their matches are. Together so it can fit with both of their schedules. I know I have school, basketball, debate and guitar so...

You know, I guess I didn't think the casting part through very well... However, I did think deeply enough to realize that there would be quite a few games, some potentially simultaneous, and thus we would need to consider, rather than live casting the season games, instead saving them, and casting them at an appropriate time. However, I just realized, with 14 Bo3 rounds going on each week, that's 28-42 games to cast...
geeeeyyAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHH!
Hmm... Well, I still want a replay of every game available for the players to study their opponents, but I don't expect every game to be casted... I guess try to cast as many as you can, or perhaps we can agree as a community of fellow leaguers as to which games are cast worthy, while the rest will simply be the replay files, posted in the new thread announcing this league. Perhaps each week can have a poll, and the top 4-5 games voted upon get casted? Idk, but I'd like to attempt to showcase different styles of games, ie games with similar builds and so forth don't need to be casted ad nauseum. Perhaps I'll watch the games, and then group them into seperate types, and we can vote in each category, idk... (eg, the PvP 4gate on 4gate category, the ZvT muta-ling v biotech category, early cheese rush category, the weird strange builds category, etc.) As for the finals, hopefully we can agree upon times to play, such that they're casted live. I'd like to have only the casters and players in any final games, with the rest of us watching via ustream or whatever, such that there's no dc game delays (yes, I was a culprit myself, it can happen to anyone...). However, there is the chance that both flow and hybrid will be in the finals, so perhaps if we have a few others willing to cast, that would be awesome. I wouldn't mind casting, I have full confidence in my abilities to analyze and entertain, but my only problem is that I'm not sure how to setup the live show, link it to my comp, etc, yet I'm willing to learn... Perhaps if we can get more willing casters from you guys we can lessen the season load on flow and hybrid as well, provided they're willing to share with us their secrets of casting...
I think I'll be posting a new thread soon, with the banner, and announcing the league's commencement, along with confirmation emails to go out to all players, with a 48 hour limit for confirmation. I would like games for Week1 to begin this Sunday through Saturday (9/19-9/25), and I say contact your opponent, and agree upon a time to face off. If you agree to practice matches, that is fine by me, but agree before your official matches start. Also, if you have any practice matches you'd like to showcase, by all means do so. My email address is bchaney at psychology dot ou dot edu, (did that format to avoid webcrawling spammers :p) and all official games are required to come to my address. I'll consolidate the rules, line-up, etc in the official thread, and again, I'll post the link to it in a reply to this thread.
Happy gaming! ~DuncanIdaho

Website will be finished by tonight. We need bios!
|
Hey i will get your bio to you as soon as soon as possible. Also another thing i wanted to add, is that everyone should try to add everyone, than when you are playing a match against someone let the people know who are in the tournament know you are playing. As a group we should try and make an effort to spectate games live, (as long as both players are okay) just to add a sense of.... i dont know the word but a sense of awesomeness to all the games. just a thought
|
Yeah. Kind of a sense of "comradeship" to the league. I can see a lot of practice partners sprouting from this.
|
i think thats a good idea because this isnt just a league but i think im pretty safe in saying we all want to get better
|
Yeah I know I would love spectators, and spectator other league members games. Makes it more tight environment type of thing.
Also I wouldn't mind doing some casting if needed or co-casting to help with it.
|
lol dune.
I will go work on my bioooo
I'm also testing out my casting stuff. HybridFlow, do you guys do it fullscreen, max settings, etc?
I play on low with health bars turned on, and I don't really want to change things when I cast. Idk, just wondering how much it would bother people, cause my computer can take it, but I can't be bothered.
Anyways, having additional casters should never be a bad thing. Hopefully I'll have a test video out by tonight, to check the quality and stuff. In any case, I think that we should at least cast 2 games every week. One from each round?

27 years old, married, have a 1 year old, and currently attending grad school to acquire my PhD in statistics (quantitavtive psychology to be exact, but no one knows what the hell that is, so yeah, statistics in all honesty). I live in Oklahoma City, going to OU in Norman, OK, but I'm from Texas originally, as is my wife, whom I met during my bachelor degree days at Texas Tech. When I'm not working, entertaining my wife, or taking care of my son, I like to read lots of Scifi novels (Isaac Asimov, Frank ((and his son Brian)) Herbert, Douglas Adams,OrsonScott Card, etc.) and play video games.
I've played several old school rts's, Red Alert, Warcraft, some game probably no one's heard of: Enemy Nations, and I dabbled in Total Annihilation as well.
I'm a Zerg player in SC2. I played random in SC1 and later in BW, but always did zerg the best. Same with SC2 Beta, I played random, but did best as Zerg. At one point during the beta, I was platinum, but alas, I am gold after release... Finally I realized I truly play best as Zerg, and thus broke out of my random-rut and ventured into specializing, as the pink zerg. (pink makes them OP, you know...)

Any settings I can change? I'm currently recording in windowed mode, 1280xwtv. Should I try to be recording fullscreen?

Yeah. Probably. And it doesnt look good in 720p cause firstly, youre on low graphics and secondly you arent 1080p and theres still a bit of compression at 720.

For those of us who have different TL names and SC2 names, which one should be our official name?
|
I put sc2 names. Because thats what its going to show in videos.
|
Mm one more thing. We should have one starting map set per week, and then loser picks.
Also, we should implement something that lets us see the results for each of the 3 games of each set.
While everyone is practicing vP strategies, I have a terran and a zerg to play on the first week T_T.

Also, Karliath, I was curious, what software are you using to make that cast? Looked like a good start, but I'm not sure how to do the voice over, the banner hiding the game length bar, etc. I'm assuming you're using fraps? In any case, just let me know so that I can work on my casting as well.

On the point system, I was reconsidering the system for deciding who gets into the finals. Obviously, the top 4 players get in. Orignially, number of rounds won is the first deciding factor. Then, points based on win:loss through the games within the rounds, ie win=3,loss=0, tie=1. I thought of a scenario that would arrise from this which isnt exactly fair. If say, Mission won several rounds at 2-0, while I won several rounds at 2-1, we would have the same number of round wins, and points, however Mission crushed his opponents while i skirted by somehow. I'm thinking losses should hurt us in some way. Perhaps now, wins should be +4 points, and losses should be -1, and ties, we'll just keep at +1, not that i foresee them happening, though. In this case, all my -1's for the lost games will show up when comparing our scores, thus giving credit where credit is due.
As for maps, I say we predetermine the first map, and then winner vetos a map first, and loser picks from the remaining 1v1 maps. I'm tempted to simply say Lost Temple, Blistering Sands, Desert Oasis, Scrap Station, Metalopolis, XelNaga Caverns, Delta Quadrant, Steppes of War, Kulas Ravine (essentially the 1v1 Blizz maps. Am I leaving any out?) and how about this(note: both bo3's per week use the same setup):
weekly first maps:
Week1: Lost Temple Week2:Desert Oasis Week3:Metalopolis Week4:Scrap Station Week5: Kulas Ravine Week6: XelNaga Caverns Week7: Delta Quadrant Week8:Steppes of War Week9:Blistering Sands Week10:Lost Temple Week11: Blistering Sands Week12:Kulas Ravine Week13:Steppes of War
Finals: 3v4: Scrap Station Xv2: Desert Oasis Xv1:Metalopolis
And guys, always, always, always, ask your winning opponent from the previous game which map he vetoes before announcing your map choice. I think in the Cup#2 we were forgetting to do this, not that it seemed to cause many problems, but let's get it right this go round.

can we not do desert oasis in the finals?

Um, I guess, if we have a good reason and consensus. Though keep in mind it's just 1 of the 5 games. I just willy nilly picked those maps, mostly just attempting a 1v1, then a 2v2, then a 1v1, etc. I remember Day9 saying how much he likes desert oasis, since it has typically strange games, and I thought it might serve to require us to step out of our comfort zones. I don't like desert oasis much myself, but then no one does, so I'd like to think it's even in that regard.
Idk, I'll change it if you guys really want to, it's whatever.

What about crossfire as one of the maps?

crossfire? hmmm, i'll check it out... I was also thinking debris field might be interesting, as it's an islands map... :/ Any other suggestions? I'll be happy to add them to the pool and remove any doubles of maps, as far as 1st maps go, since there's 13 weeks and 3 more rounds for the finals, yet only 9 maps in the 1v1 pool. If added, they'll be available for veto &/or losers choice. But I don't want more than 16 maps total.
All agreed on adding crossfire and debris field?

Agreed, although islands might favor terran dramatically.

Idk... Not necessarily, all races have drops, and zerg air beats terran air, and then zerg also has nydus. I'm not too afriad of terran on an island map, especially since mutas>vikings. As for toss, I'd assume they have a really decent airforce, and thus they'd be fine, and warp prisms will allow for some decent ground harrass. It will be different, for sure, but I think it would be fun. All races have their pros and cons when it comes to islands, but we can all tech to t3 which may provide some very interesting games, cast worthy for sure.
