Hi, I lost a couple of games against several tosses because of the colossus and I am very bad when it comes to having the right amount of vikings vs colossus. So I just want to have this question answered. Btw i couldnt find any old threads that mentioned ratios.

If they have a more than 4+ colossi its nice to be able to one shot them. I think you need like 13-14 vikings to one shot a colossus. Watch how Thorzain used his vikings against MC in the TSL and you'll get a good idea of how to effectively use vikings against colossi.

You could always do some mathcrafting to find a decent number. Say you want to 3-shot colossus, no matter how many there are.
Assuming no upgrades, Vikings deal 10 (+4 armored) x2 damage per attack to air. Therefore it takes 5 attacks to almost deplete their shields (140 damage). After that they deal 13 x2 damage to the hull per attack (colossi naturally have 1 armor). 6 attacks will deplete their shields and deal 16 damage to the hull. After that it takes 8 shots to deplete their hull health (184 remaining, 26 damage per shot), for a total of 14 shots.
To 3shot colossus, therefore, you need 5 vikings. To 2shot them, you need 7 vikings. To 1shot them, you need 14.

thanks guys i have a good idea now i just have to try it out now, rewatched the TSL3 Thorzain vs mc game, and i figured out my problem is that i stick with only 1 starport reactor pumping vikings which does give me enough. thorzain always goes 2 reactor starports before he picks up his 2nd expo

I think that you should always go for an amount that can 2 or 1 shot colossus. A protoss army with 4 or 5 or more can kill way over 50 food in just a matter of seconds.

What about upgrades? How would this effect the numbers (leaving a viking as a whole number, naturally)

I don't think it's as linear as the poll might make it look like. You should rather think of it as an exponential development. (not sure of the english word... I mean kind of a Log(x)-Function) Also, the amount of Colossi is not the Only Factor of the equation.

I think in any case the numbers should be between 8-13, both for Vikings and Corruptors. Nothing less or more. Anything higher than that requires for you to trade some of the vikings by one shotting the Colossi one by one (i.e qxc vs Incontrol on Terminus RE) Anything higher also significantly cuts the supply your ground army, which you will need to clean up the stalker ball. Anything fewer, means you're leaving the fate of your ground army to upgrades, your opponent's and yours unit control, and positioning.

What do you think of the Terran air upgrades? better get attack or armor? i prefer armor, because it will save my medis and ravens so i save a lot of gas.
