Additionally, you can also attack move the medivac on a unit so it will also heal (IIRC)

Yo tl.net, I just started to write some notes down about my play to improve more efficiently.
I think I heard something like that before in an old Day9 show or something smiliar.

I started with only some different builds, ordered like "Cheese", "Makro" and "All-In" for all 3 match-ups (I play terran). I believe its very important to have a variety in your play so you can surprise your opponent. especially because I want to start to play some tournaments. I think real good players are the ones who can win tournaments and not only get high in the Ladder (I´m only diamond but still..)

But I wonder what else I could write down in my little sc2-bible. Like specific timings, although I dont really know any...

So I appreciate any thoughts of that and maybe you have some opinions wich help me out

I see on the strategy forum there are several custom hotkey layouts. Are these really worth learning/does a large portion of players use them? I'm a gold level player about to switch races so I thought it was a good time to ask since I will be learning new hotkeys anyway. If so, which one(s) should I consider learning?

supposedly a lot of pros use Core. i would guess that almost every pro player has at least remapped/changed a few hotkeys for efficiency. are they worth learning? that depends, do you feel like you need a new layout?

when i was in gold league i had thousands of things to work on that were more important to me than hotkeys. esp if you're switching races. if you want to try something new for fun or to see how you like it, there's no reason you can't. but unless you're serious about competing (i'm not, personally) i don't see the need really. to me it's in the same category as when mid level players ask stuff like "should i get this new mouse/keyboard? should i change my graphics settings so i can see better"? the motivation is usually wanting to find some neat trick that will improve your play, but the real way to improve your play is just to improve. i would worry about technical details once you've become a competitive player

full disclosure: i use default layout and don't buy hardware for gaming, so i'm obviously justifying my own way of doing things feel free to listen to feedback from people who do use core etc.

just archons? like chargelot/archon? mass roach/hydra with kiting or roach/hydra/infestor will beat that because it's a horrible composition. if it's like chargelot/archon/storm then you need swarm hosts. if you're talking about lategame deathballs with colossus/templar/VR/archons, sorry, there's no real counter to that other than standard swarm host turtle or standard mass muta switch. in endgame scenarios, archons are basically just superzealots, they're there to make the army live longer while all the long range units deal damage

Build variety is important in tournaments, but Day[9] himself has repeatedly said that depth beats breadth. That is, a player who knows how to play one build amazingly will (most of the time) beat another player who is just okay at a lot of builds.

It's been my experience that honing one build to a gleaming polish is the most rewarding aspect of SC2.

For StarCraft notes, I have a whole folder of them.

- Builds are saved as printable Word documents, which I can place on my desk until I memorize a build. The words color-coded and indented for maximum readability, but find whatever system works for you.
- I have a document with notes just for the Day[9] daily. Whenever I watch a daily I make an entry for it (#932 PvZ Dealing with Mutas, for example) then take down important notes as I watch the video.
- I have a document for timings. Nothing fancy, whenever I load up some pro or GM replays I may take some early timings down (14 pool starts at 1:50, Hatch First starts at 2:10). The more "vague" timings I just make mental notes of.

Those are the 3 basic pillars of my SC2 notes.

For the beginner, I would say just have a pen and paper by your desk and jot down some timings, because knowing timings will make playing SC2 much less scary and mysterious. If you know Mutalisks cannot possibly be out before a certain time, you won't be needlessly anxious, you won't build defenses too early, you won't be afraid to move out, etc. Makes you much more comfortable and focused when playing.

Can someone link me to the megathread detailing what the competitive graphics settings are in sc2?

I also need to be able to copy and paste the variables.txt

It's not this thread: http://www.teamliquid.net/blogs/viewblog.php?topic_id=412716&view=all

I think I recall it being posted by a mod or a blueposter.

The same thing happened in WoL. For a period muta was extremely strong. Easiest way to explain it is the meta of life.

1 - Muta gets really popular and strong.
2 - People get really good at defending against Muta and being ahead.
3 - People stop going mutas and everyone goes RvR.
4 - People randomly go muta's at times and eventually it becomes popular again.

If you select all of the medivacs and only three are filled up, simply click "d" and click on the mini-map and only the medivacs with units will move to that location. After that, you can hot -key that group of medivacs and proceed with the drop

My advice would be muscle memory. Learn the hotkeys, and learn the basics. I see SC2 as a "Race to 200 supply".. the faster I can get there the better I am. Obviously, it's not that simple. Things to keep in mind:

1.Workers- You need enough workers to fully saturate 3 bases. This means constant production. Literally every 10 seconds or so you should 1. hit your base hotkey and hit the hotkey to build a worker.

2. Supply- For me as terran... I build depots at 10 supply, 17, 22, 30... after 30 supply I just continually build depots..
2a. At around 50-60 supply.. I start building 2 depots at a time. You will get supply blocked if not.

I will also echo what someone else said... Learn one build, and learn it well. If you play Terran, I would just work on the 1 Rax fast expand build. Just a suggestion though, Starcraft and the beauty behind the game is that you can do whatever your heart desires... but that doesn't necessarily mean you will win

this is true. but it's also the spore buff? i mean, that definitely put muta in a place where it was a viable opener but not a game winner. kind of weird to say that "nothing changed" when there was a huge balance change specifically aimed at reducing muta play (referring to the guy you're replying to, not you)
