[H]Macro help and general improvements.

Neverdown 7 Posts January 09 2011 00:05 GMT #1 Hello community of Teamliquid. First of all I'm a relatively new Starcraft player. I've started playing one month ago and have played around 200 games as either Zerg or Protoss since then. Needless to say I'm in the bronze league, so all I am discussing is based on the bronze level. So, that was a little introduction. Let's get to the problem. Most of the time when I'm playing I have a huge economical advantage according to the score screen at the end of the game. The thing is that my opponents seem to have much larger / stronger armies. I also notice that I have a lot of unspent minerals (not gas, gas is always near zero when I'm building one colossus at a time and not even getting upgrades, still 2 bases have 2x2 workers on the gas geysers.) Rushing in fast with zealots or zerglings doesn't seem to be an option either because most of my opponents tend to wall off their base. In order to illustrate my gameplay a little better I've decided to upload a replay of me playing a PvP. Things are looking pretty good for me (I have low minerals because of having 5 gateways and just building zealots (I don't think my army gets a lot stronger by building that much zealots but at least I am spending my minerals, I guess). I'm on two bases and starting my third, where my opponents is contained in his base on only one base. His army consists of Stalkers, Zealots and Void Rays (scouted) so I get some Colossi, Stalkers and Zealots to counter it. Still he defeats me for some reason. I wonder if anyone could give me some basic pointers to inprove my gameplay. I'm not looking for specific PvP advice, since I haven't decided to go Protoss or Zerg yet and I seem to have the same problems against Zerg and Terran - them having a much stronger army even though I'm containing them in their base and having a lot stronger economy. Mostly I'm looking for things to improve such as better spending of my minerals and general things you notice when looking at my replay. If needed I could upload more replays because this one doesn't really show any excessive minerals, but I don't think *wasting* minerals on zealots by lack of alternatives is the way to go against his army composition. Amanitar Netherlands26 Posts January 09 2011 00:26 GMT #2 I think there is just 1 thing that will greatly improve your gameplay. 3 Workers per gas. (You said with 2 bases that you had 2x2 workers on gas, optimal mining requires 3 workers PER GAS) This way you won't have to spend all your mins or zealots, because you can actually tech up/make other gateway units.

Neverdown 7 Posts January 09 2011 12:47 GMT #4 Putting three workers on one gas geyser was actually a pretty helpfull tip, thank you very much! Also thanks for mentioning the Day9 stream, I'll definately check that out. I think somebody trolled me once by saying that you two workers per geyser is enough, however I do find that especially when playing as Zerg you shouldn't put too many workers on gas or you'll be having excessive gas and too little minerals to keep up with drone/zergling/roach production.

vgnftw Poland33 Posts January 09 2011 12:58 GMT #5 If you dont need that much gas, just dont build another extractor, its pointless coz u lose a drone. Another tip, if youre mineral count is too high and u cant spend it because u have too few larvas, just build another hatchery. A lot of pros morph an inbase hatchery while getting second expansion. Oh, as P you got to know how many gates and other production facilities u need to constantly produce units. U could tell us whats the BO u usually use.

Neverdown 7 Posts January 09 2011 20:39 GMT #6 vgnftw: do you mean the maximum amount of production buildings my economy can support without? I think that's about 3 gateways + tech building (starport, robo or expansion) or 4 gateways, but I'm not entirely sure.
