Hey TL, I have a question about fungal growth.

How do you think that fungal growth should be used? Should it be used during a battle to weaken the army as you are fighting it or should it be more of a hit and run kind of thing just to slow down the army and soften it up a little bit. I've used it both ways and seen it done both ways but I wanted to know what you guys think.

The damage it does is really a side effect to the snare it gives. Use it so that the enemy army can't kite your lings/blings/mutas/hydras/whatever.

Well, fungal doesn't really deal that much damage, but it does do splash, so if up against groups of low-hp units (marines, zerglings, banelings, workers) I think it's acceptable to go for the damage (also in ZvZ because in roach wars, every little bit helps). Otherwise, you mainly want it to immobilize stuff (mostly blink stalkers imo, but also stim-happy bioballs). If you're really up against a wall, I guess that using it to delay pushes is a good idea but otherwise there's better things to spend money on than infestors.

Times where it's really necessary is when you're going for brood lords, because you want to be able to stop those corruptors/vikings/void rays/blink stalkers/phoenixes/etc. from being able to kite/pick off your units with impunity.

intirely situational spell. good for hit and run to buy time, but also like if used on marines you can pick them all off with hydras without them being able to fire back at all.

Fungal growth is such an important spell. It can be used in all the ways that you mentioned. Mostly, I get infestors in ZvZ. They are such a key unit because they weaken the opponent so much and stop mutas, etc. Zerglings and marines die so fast to infestors, and fungal growth is just so good at stopping phoenix, banshee, and other air unit harass. Sooo, get them in every match up. The best way I think they can be used is worker harass. Since they can burrow move, just move to your opponents mineral line and FG or spam infested terrans.

Fungal growth is anything but situational. It makes the difference between victory and defeat much of the time.

FG is obviously amazing against melee units. Zealots, zerglings, and banelings are left completely defenseless. It allows hydralisks to out range marines/marauders/roaches, paralyzes stalkers, and it wrecks any sort of enemy harass. It's like having a lethal version of force field, and every zerg player knows how rigged FF is!

0) Splitting up armies similar to forcefield, unless they keep the rest of their army near the fungal'd units its gfg, and if they do keep their units together its free damage as they will be forced to take the whole fungal (not much damage but everything helps, and with multiple fungals this can really sabotage an attack, clearly medivacs ameliorate the effect). This is especially powerful in zvz where there is roach v roach race.

1) Damage to low hp unit clusters (lings/marines/WORKERS [quick double cast to refresh the timer will kill all workers, great sacrifice of one or two 150+ energy infestors as you can easily grab 20 workers with 2 infestors pulling this off, especially v protoss])
2) Snare melee against any ranged
3) Snare ranged against hydralisk 6 range
4) Snare air hit and runners (phoenix/muta O_O), and snare air units in general if you have hydras out
5) Detected cloaked units if they somehow took out your detection
6) Hard counter to blink stalkers

Of course many other amazing uses

it's mainly for snares, but also very useful vs some of the low health units.

Cast it on marines before your Blings run in to prevent them from kiting and making sure 1 Bling kills a group instead of 2
Cast it on Blings to insta-gib them (awesome and rage-enducing)

The only thing fungal growth DOESN'T work on is an ultra, because of the frenzy (and since they got the hp amount to easily take the 36 damage and keep moving along like a boss)

I often use it as a dps increase and to prevent army retreats. Also shuts down harass quite well.

Using it as a hit and run is good in theory, but if you have 3-4 infestors pushed up by their lonesome and you misclick, that's 400/600 you'll be down.
