But if it's nowhere near his base It's not very useful. And overlords take ages to move there.

workers U as zerg also do have? Send ur overlords to higher positioned cliffs or beyond the edges of the map in the beginning if you don't want them to stand around in your base. Depending on the map there are several good positions to place your overlord. In case u want to scout the build of the terran u suicide one of them inside the base and but of course u will lose it. From what u are telling us, your problem seems to be that you just move your overlords in a direction to your enemy without thinking where its not protected and probably useless. And if you need to ask the forums such things i might think that starcraft 2 is not the game for you User was warned for this post

Also if your overlords are getting killed on their way to above stated positions, especially on 2 player maps where overlord routes are somewhat predictable, send them on a detour so when their first stalker pokes out to snipe one, it wont be where it should be. Also you can use your overlord to bait units out if you have zerglings. A stray stalker or marine can be killed with a few lings, and every little edge is an edge so its good for you. :D If you want good information with your overlord AND not have it die, you must be very proactive in placement. You cannot expect simply move the overlord in the general direction of the enemy and hope for intel and for it not to die :D

The ovie should not be your only scout as well. It's too easy to hide tech from an ovie. Drone scout is much more reliable and you can use the extractor trick to keep building/cancelling an extractor in his base to delay his second gas and give valuable scouting information as to his unit composition at the cost of a few minerals every so often.

So if it's a map where the ovie can get there fast and there's a safe spot you can move it to, go for it, just make sure to move to safety before a marine/stalker comes out.

If it's against a terran, don't move your ovie to the opponent ramp but move it outside your opponents base (so you can scout his base later). If it's against a protoss, the map depends but move it outside his base as well (at the side of his base) so you can scout later.
