Hello there

I am one old WC3 map maker, and i was interested in making SC2 maps.
However, from what i've seen, it seems ridiculously hard to get new players?
In Wc3, you could just host a random new map and have players.

It seems like there are only 30-40 maps that can played with several players, else you just can't get anybody in.

Does your map simply need to be in the top to be able to play it?
If i make one "interesting but not refined" map, will i be able to have some players?

This is making me afraid to get involved in a serious map, so i'm asking your opinion.

Thanks.

The last time I got my custom map played was several months ago, after sitting in the custom games chatroom for 3 hours trying to pull some players in.

If that's any indication.

You can post about your maps here on tl and if they are good many here will sure play and recommend them.
If you put an effort in this I think your maps can be popular.
Btw I would like to test your maps if you do any cause I like to test your maps.

The map system for Bnet kind of sucks. Apparently it's getting a makeover in the next patch though so that might fix some of the issues.

Apart from UMS, the only custom melee maps that ever get exposure on Bnet are the ones used in big tournaments (GSL, MLg, etc) =/ Looking forward to patch 1.5 and a system that actually makes reasonable sense.

This new B net system makes it rough for people to get their maps out there... your best bet is to post it here and hopefully get that popularity up!! Keep up the good work !! i loved wc3 customs!

In the first months whenever there was a reboot of the server you could farm your map and get it in the first page of the custom games. But nobody played it anyways or very rarely.

A solution is to idle in the battle.net chat channel 'looking for custom games" and ask, but it's rare someone will want to play your map.

One last solution is to organize a small tournament but it has a lot of chances to fail. I tried to run 5 and the last 2 didn't have enough players. Maybe if you're from America you'll have more chance since most people on teamliquid are North American.

Maybe if you make your map with 6 minerals and 1 rich gas you can get on the fad and have your maps played by the mapping aristocracy.

There's a couple ways of getting to the top of popularity, neither of them very easy. Realistically, chances of breaking through the popularity barrier is next to nil for even AMAZING maps, which is sad. If your map is a melee map, stop now. Submit it to some map contests and forget it exists on bnet.

1) Make a very simple but fun map that anyone of any skill level can enjoy, a la Pobes vs Zeelot (or Monobattles, ho ho). Get it highlighted somewhere and hope the ball starts rolling.

2) Make an amazing map. Try to get it everywhere you can. Don't shoot yourself when the populace opts to stick to the simpler maps.

The super secret option is to give up all hope and wait for HotS to try to fix it.

Actually Blizzard said they won't wait until hots and they'll change a bit the system in the next patch 1.5.0. You'll be able to look at a list of maps with people currently waiting in the lobby.

Unless you make a really baller map and post it on the forums, you're never going to be able to get a dozen players on your map.

It is the cruel and unfortunate truth of Battle.net 0.2.

I feel like this resource has been mined out. Whenever I am on there seems to only be 15-30 people. I have tried sitting around asking if people want to play your map. I can only stand to do it for a few minutes every now and then. It makes me feel like a panhandler on the street asking for food scraps. I got one or 2 games going but if they join the lobby and realise you are the creator they will often just leave the lobby instantly and PM you with a simillar conversation that I've had a few times before:

Bnet stranger: "I'm not playing your gay sucky map! It's gay and it sucks and it is the worst map I have ever seen"
Me: "Wait, so you've played it then? what issue did you have?"
Bnet stranger: "It's (*&^&^%&^% $%&^%$ $%@$#" (<- battlenet swear filter)
Me: "You haven't played it before. I'm guessing you've never even heard of it, have you?"
Bnet stranger: "I don't need to know what it is to know that it's a piece of *&^%&^$^%#$%@$%^#$^^*&"
Me ".... *sigh*"

Random people on the internet are scared to even be in the lobby of a custom game that isn't Nexus wars.

I think the only way to get games going is when you have a large list of friends or are an active part of a clan so that you can bug them to try out your newest versions.

Actually Blizzard said they won't wait until hots and they'll change a bit the system in the next patch 1.5.0. You'll be able to look at a list of maps with people currently waiting in the lobby.

From what I recall they said that people using "Fun-Or-Not" will be placed into games which have a lobby which has been open for a long time awaiting players. I thought I remember them saying specifically that there will NOT be a list of open lobbies. I don't know how many people use Fun-Or-Not now days anyway.

Even if they do show a list like that it would have to be the default view when people click on the arcade button. If you have to go through a menu to find the list of open lobbies then 80% of people will not know it exists and most of the rest will ignore it.

Can you find a link for that?

Would somebody be willing to organize a little play sesh between map makers on like a Saturday or something (a day where time-zone conflicts will be at a minimum)? I would like to say I would, but I don't have the time to even play sc2, let alone organize something like this. It would just be a weekly time where we could all get together and play new maps from this week (preferably) or maybe test some of the motm top 5 qualifiers.

It wouldn't be much to do, just raise awareness for it, but I feel like if we try to keep it up, we could get a decent player base of mappers of all levels playing maps. If nothing else, it would be fun, and not stressful like ladder is.

Heck, I might even wip out my 2 months of rust build up gold level play and play some games with other... errr... less-skilled players. Might be fun?

And it would do exactly what we want, which is get people playing on maps.
Games before dames.

I'd be up for it sometimes if I'm not working... or going out... or have other stuff on.

Don't know if I could be a regular but I would be interested in playing less known custom games (UMS or melee) on a semi weekly basis.

There have been events like this before with mixed success:
http://us.battle.net/sc2/en/forum/topic/3657438794#9

Don't know if anyone has managed to get a weekly thing up before.

Okay thanks for the various answers and opinion.

Like i don't aim to be in the "top" custom map, i guess i will just give up.

Maybe the "1.5 patch" you're talking about will make me change my mind

Part of the problem with getting random people into your game particularly for games that are more complicated is what I like to call the "hospitality factor" of the other players. If Nexus Wars were ladder, I'd be pretty high right now, but every so often I'll check out another tug-of-war kind of game or I'll revisit Desert Strike, and quite often the people who are there expect you to have absolutely everything figured out about the game. There are some out there who will try to give some instruction or tips, but most of the time people will rage because you seem to be doing something out of the ordinary and non-optimal. I would say this general tendancy is quite off-putting and is probably part of the reason why it is difficult to get new people into some customs. I think one thing that ought to be available is a quick guide feature, and maybe this thing is possible already with the editor, but there needs to be something more accessible then something to be programmed (or copy pasted) into the triggers for each map.

This system pisses me off as well, used to make maps on BW and now re-designing Korean Defense for SC2. What pisses me off the most though is the fact that the top games aren't that good. They're good, but not Page 1 material. I want epic tower defenses like in WC3 or SAT Control where there's a lot of innate fun no matter how much you play.

Usually I just find friends from school/team to play with, usually I can steal 2-3 of them.

Tower Defenses were a product of limited map tools and limited mapmaking ability. There are far shinier gems hidden in the mountain of concrete than a good TD.
