On Friday the REAL StarLeague opened up, as the players who escaped the group stage are not pried and set for a run at the title. Following the group stage, the first place winners were able to select their opponents for the next round. The round of 16 is a bo3 series, and on Friday the first half of the players took to the stage. Here is a look at the playoff bracket:

Game One: Hwasin vs Zergman on Arkanoid
Hwasin has been a busy guy lately, playing in both Starleagues and until recently the proleague as well. His arrival on the scene has been impressive, but Zergman has established himself as a steady presence over the past year and is capable of some big games himself.
Both players spawned at the bottom of the map, with Zergman's overlord correctly heading towards 5 to find his foe. Feeling safe on this initially-island map, Hwasin dropped a CC at 14 and set himself up for a powerful mid-game build. However, Zegman had vastly different ideas, and his gas first build led him to quick one hatchery lurkers with modest ling support. His early scouting success allowed him to clear a quick path to his opponent’s base and the race was on. His lings burst into the terran base, catching Hwasin surprised and under-gunned. The speedlings quickly ripped apart the scv and Hwasin never even saw a lurker before he typed GG.

삼성전자 박성준은 신한은행과 궁합(?)이 좋다. 시즌1에서 6위, 시즌2에서 5위를 기록했다. 시즌3에서도 기세좋게 승리를 거뒀다. 16강 첫 경기를 잡아내며 8강 진출에 유리한 고지를 점했다. 최근 들어 화끈한 공격을 선보이고 있는 박성준은 다양한 스타일로의 변화를 꾀하고 있다.

-알카노이드에서 빌드를 정하기 힘들었을텐데.
-You must have had difficulties in deciding what build to use in Alkanoid.
▶예전에 자주 사용됐던 전략인데 최근에는 많이 쓰이지 않는다. 테란의 최근 추세가 더블 커맨드라서 이 전략을 특별히 준비했다. 이번 전략의 콘셉트도 올인이다. 1회용 전략이다 보니 연습 상대마다 첫 경기는 다 이겼다. 그런데 하면 할수록 승률이 낮아지더라.
▶This build was often used in the past, but seldom recently. Since Terran's current trend is to go double command center, I specially prepared for this build. This build's concept is, all-in. It is a one time build, and whomever my practice partner was, I won all the first matches. But as practice games went on, the winning percentile became poorer.
-올인성 플레이를 특히 좋아하는 것 같다.
-You seem to specially favor all-in plays.
▶테란전 승률이 낮아진 이유를 분석해봤다. 내 스타일이 너무 노출된 것이 원인이었다. 주로 운영으로 풀어나가다 보니 테란들이 처음부터 중후반을 도모하더라. 허를 찌르는 올인성 플레이가 오히려 승률이 더 좋았다. 다양한 스타일로 경기를 펼치려고 하고 있다. 나와 경기하는 테란들은 초반을 조심해야할 것이다.
▶I sat down, and analyzed why my winning percentile vs Terran became so low. My playstyle was much too widely exposed. Having coordinated my games with focusing on late-mid games most of the time, Terran set their minds from the very start on also, coordinating theirs for mid-late game. The percentile was higher in all-in plays, thrusting the unexpected opponents. I am trying to perfor y games with many different playstyles. Any Terran facing me should take all caution the minute game starts.

▶당시에는 이 맵에서 졌지만 오늘도 내가 진다고는 생각하지 않았다. 전적이 뒤지더라도 마인드 컨트롤로 풀어나가려고 노력한다. 자신감을 가지기 위해 자기 암시를 자주 건다. 다음 경기도 자신있게 준비하겠다.
▶At the time, I was defeated on this very map, but never once I thought I'd lose again today. Despite the unfavorable record, I try to untie(the complications) with mind control. ▶일단 4강 진출이 목표다. 4강에 진출하면 당연히 목표가 상향 조정될 것이다. 1차 목표는 4강이다.

Game Two: FireBatHero vs GGPlay on Reverse Temple
Both players in the second game should simply be happy to be here, having made it through the wildcard round to get here. The second TvZ match of the night opened with 12/3 positions on RT, FBH spawning at noon. GGPlay skirmished early with his lings, and then quickly teched to two hatch mutalisks to take advantage of the close positions. As FBH took his expansion, he was quickly under siege from the fine muta micro of GGPlay.
With his fliers keeping FBH occupied in the north, GGPlay promptly expanded to 6 while continuing to harass. Not following the normal pattern of quick lurkers after mutas, GGPlay continued to spend gas on mutalisks, hoping to bleed the terran player and prevent him from moving out. For his part, FBH took his licks but doggedly continued to tech and build, researching irradiate and massing MM.
By the time GGPlay finally put down a den, he had been attacking FBH for a good ten minutes with mutas. He had killed countless turrets, two sci vessels, and a legion of marines. However, it was becoming apparent that his tactics were losing their effectiveness despite his control of three geysers. FBH continued to mass and soon added a couple tanks to the arsenal. He scanned, seeing the lurkers morphing outside the zerg natural. Seeing his chance he moved out with his army and took his mineral only. Although GGPlay had dictated the pace of the game thus far, he was no longer able to be aggressive with his mutalisks and the balance of the game began to shift.
FBH solidified his hold on his second expansion, and then moved south to the zerg natural. Knowing it was now or never to stop the human offensive, GGPlay sent his lurker/muta/ling army against the tanks and MM of FBH. However, a single micro mistake cost him dearly. His lings came first, and the time they bought was not used by GGPlay to place his lurkers. By the time his lurkers did move into position, they found themselves unsupported by the mutalisks who sat idle by 6. With this uncoordinated attack, GGPlay watched his army get slaughtered and FBH blasted his way into the zerg main. With a secondary tank force placed at the 6 mineral only to cut off any reinforcements, the game was quickly over as FBH took the first leg of this set.
FireBatHero > GGPlay
Although GGPlay lost this game with his poorly timed attack, his mutalisk harass was godly. He used the ramp on RT to perfection, forcing FBH to constantly spread out his MM to move up and down the ramp and thus leaving stray troops ripe for the sniping. He also harassed in the main, and sent a handful of lings to to kill turrets at the Terran natural, opening up the mineral line for more harassment. If you play zerg, watch this game and watch his play for perfect muta tactics.

과연 김준영은 쉬운 상대가 아니었다. 이성은은 초반부터 뮤탈리스크에 휘둘리며 힘들게 출발했다. 정신없는 몰아치기에도 이성은은 희망을 버리지 않고 차근히 병력을 모았다. 테란의 강력함을 극대화한 것이 승리의 요인이다.
Without a doubt, Kim Junyoung was not an easy foe. Lee Sungeun started off suffering from Mutalisks from the beginning. Amidst vicious attacks from every direction, he did not give up hope and mustered his forces steadily. His reason for victory was maximizing the power of Terran units.

-This is your first win in round of 16.
▶아직까지는 내 기록 중에서 가장 좋은 성적이다. 저번에는 16강에서 2패로 탈락했다. 조금씩 내 기록을 경신해가고 있다는 것, 그리고 그 기록이 현재 진행형이라는 게 좋다. 오늘은 예전에 우리 팀에 몸담았던 피파의 김수영 선수 생일이다. 이기면 생일 축하한다고 소감에서 말하기로 했다(웃음).
▶This is my personal best until now. Last time I was eliminated in round of 16 with 2 losses. I like that I am setting new records for myself, and that record is still running alive. Today is the birthday of Kim Sooyoung, a Fifa player who were in the team before. I promised him I'd say happy birthday if I won(smile).

▶시작 빌드부터 내가 굉장히 불리했다. 내 빌드는 투 해처리 뮤탈리스크에 흔들리는 빌드인데, 예상대로 많이 흔들리고 힘들었다. 그런데 상대 러커와 하이브가 굉장히 늦길래 언제든지 한방이 갖춰지면 역전 가능성이 있다고 생각했다.
▶From the starting build orders, I was in a disadvantage. My build is one that will suffer a lot from two hatchery mutalisks, and as I predicted, I was shaken up a lot, suffered greatly. But seeing that the opponent's Hive and lurkers were very delayed, I thought I can win whenever my big bang forces are mustered.

▶상대의 실수가 가장 컸다. 병력이 러커 따로 뮤탈리스크 따로 왔기 때문에 딱히 컨트롤을 할 필요는 없었다. 사실 내가 두번째 멀티를 가져갈 때도 저그가 계속 레어였기 때문에 상대가 계속 공격을 온다. 그 교전에서 승리하면서 이길 수 있겠다는 생각이 들었다.
▶The opponent made a horrible mistake. I did not need to perform any particular unit controls because the lurkers headed in, and then the mutalisks. Since Zerg was in Lair up until the time I tried my second expansion, the opponent had no choice but to continuously attack. I thought I could win if I win that battle.

▶아직까지는 오늘 경기를 준비하느라 많이 생각하지는 못했다. 오늘 성준이형이 보여줬듯이 알카노이드에서 테란이 더블 커맨드를 하면 저그들이 너무 대처를 잘 하기 때문에 성공시켜도 이기기 어렵다. 다른 관점에서 맵을 이해해야 할 것 같다. 김준영 선수가 알카노이드에서는 너무너무 잘하고 테란 빌드 선택 힘든 맵이기 때문에 어려운 게임이 될 지도 모르지만 일주일이나 남았으니 최대한 열심히 노력하는 것밖에 없다.

Just like how (Park) Sungjoon hyung showed us today, Zerg are fully prepared to counter Terran's double command center, so a successful double is hard to manage. I need to analyze the map from a different perspective. Since Kim Junyoung is just too good in Alkanoid, and Terran's build choice is hard to pick, it may be a difficult game; nonetheless, I have one week to prepare for it, and there is nothing else I can do except to try my best.

Game Three: UpMagic vs NaDa on Longinus II
The second Royal Road candidate, and the second one who went 3-0 in the groups, UpMagic showed his enormous balls in the group selection by choosing NaDa as his opponent for this round. As he opened at 11, I am sure that UpMagic had the perfect build planed and practiced for this, his most important pro game to date.
Unnnnnnfortunately, NaDa had other plans. A BBS build in the middle of the map meant that unless UpMagic performed a scouting miracle he was quickly going to be overrun. That miracle did not happen, and in a game that lasted no more than 5 minutes, NaDa took the first part of his bo3 with UpMagic.

This is going to throw UpMagic into some psychological turmoil. Next week it will all be on the line for this gamer, as he tries to hold off the defending OSL champ by winning two TvT in a row. A tough feat for anyone, let alone a rookie.

천재의 경기에는 특별한 것이 있었다. 과거에는 종종 보였지만 요새 테란 대 테란전에는 좀처럼 선보이지 않는 투 배럭 전략으로 신희승의 허를 완벽히 찔렀다. 24강을 시작할 때까지만 해도 슬럼프 의혹을 받았지만 테란전에서 연승하며 기세가 완벽히 살아났다.
There is something special in a Prodigy's play. Lee Yoonyeol played perfectly and stabbed Shin Huiseung in the back with two barracks; a build not often chosen as opposed to in the past where it was performed from time to time.
-승리 소감은.
-Your words on your win.
▶지금도 너무 떨린다. 전략이 너무 극단적이기 때문에 많이 떨렸다. 아직도 그 떨림이 남아있다. SCV 정찰이 오지 않기를 정말 속으로 많이 빌었다.
▶I am still shaken up. I was very nervous because it was such an extreme build. I still have that leftover shiver. I prayed that he would not send an SCV scout.
-전략적인 승부를 걸었다.
-You waged everything with one strategical decision.
▶연습 때 승률이 엄청 좋았다. 그래서 사용한 것이었지만 극단적이기 때문에 망설였다. 원래 준비한 전략은 따로 있었지만 이틀 전에 바꿨다. 내가 신희승 선수라면 이런 전략을 쓸 거 같다는 생각에 만들어본 전략이다. 연습해보니 전략이 너무 좋더라. 전략에는 전략으로 승부해야겠다는 생각이 들었다. 신희승 선수가 예상하지 못할 것 같았다.

천재의 경기에는 특별한 것이 있었다. 과거에는 종종 보였지만 요새 테란 대 테란전에는 좀처럼 선보이지 않는 투 배럭 전략으로 신희승의 허를 완벽히 찔렀다. 24강을 시작할 때까지만 해도 슬럼프 의혹을 받았지만 테란전에서 연승하며 기세가 완벽히 살아났다.
There is something special in a Prodigy's play. Lee Yoonyeol played perfectly and stabbed Shin Huiseung in the back with two barracks; a build not often chosen as opposed to in the past where it was performed from time to time.

▶지금도 너무 떨린다. 전략이 너무 극단적이기 때문에 많이 떨렸다. 아직도 그 떨림이 남아있다. SCV 정찰이 오지 않기를 정말 속으로 많이 빌었다.

Game Four: GoodFriend vs Iris on Longinus II
Iris was the top TvT player for all of 2006, and as he sported the new uniform of CJ he dropped his CC at 7. GF was very impressive in the group stage, and is lining himself up for a real title shot. His shiny new red CC got busy at 3 as both players started with a standard rax/gas/fac.
Both players expanded to their naturals at the same time, defending with a single vulture backed by a handful of grunts. Both players continued to mirror each other as they laid a second factory and an armoury. It was Iris who decided to be the aggressor however, sending out his first three tanks and lining them up outside the KTF terran natural. However, GF had been able to sneak out his army just before the advance and hit the containment from an unexpected angle. He managed to clear out the initial artillery, but found himself bottled up when Iris sent in reinforcements. His natural was safe, but his position precarious as Iris was in control of the map and expanding rapidly.
GF was in serious trouble, and he knew it. He ferried his army out of his main to the north, but Iris' good scanning enabled him to see everything. Because of his far earlier third and fourth gas, Iris was in a great position to open up the macro envelope. His army intercepted a maynard from GF, and then moved south and destroyed the mineral only CC. With troops coming from both sides and most of his army in drop ships on the other end of the map, GF was in serious trouble. He attempted to counter at Iris' expansion at 9, but it was too heavily defended. GG.

GF plays too passive and Iris takes advantage, closing both entrances and catching a line of unfortunate scv.

Iris showed perfect timing, perfect strategy, and perfect unit control as he dismantled GF in ten easy minutes. While his TvT may get him through this round, his side of the bracket holds some scary zerg players.
