[LP] The Tale of Mysterion

Liquipedia Weekly #11
The Tale of Mysterion or Why You Need to Log In
Once upon a time in a land far far away an article was made. Its name was Worker Rush. There wasn't much to it. Giving the advice on how to best perform this strategy, it read:
Even though Worker Rushes are a serious concern to many a Bronze lad, the article angered the LiquiGods. Their vengeful wrath descended on the luckless page, manifesting itself as a bulldozer icon, foretelling this modern Gomorrah of its imminent destruction.
A discussion page was created, outlining the article's only hope for salvation.
The Liquipedia is a wiki for /competitive/ gaming. As such we'd like to offer strategies that are actually good and help you improve. A worker rush doesn't belong there as it's pretty terrible. Also "just go a hope" isn't really advise at all. I do know that it occurs so if you want to rewrite the page as a how-to-deal-with or how-to-counter than feel free to. I'll give you a couple of days else I'm deleting this. --Pholon 10:04, 28 September 2010 (UTC)
Mere days remained, a cruelly short time after which certain doom would come to Worker Rush. Yet, this is not a tale of despair - it is one of redemption.
On the 11th day, the people of Liquipedia looked to the east and saw some guy who hadn't logged in on the horizon, who spoke the epic words that rang through the valleys beneath: I'll take a go at saving this. it's a terrible idea but notable I guess thanks to Dark Voice.
This is probably him
You see, among Liquipedia's goals are both to record and to educate. The minor historic event of people grinding through a 1000 wins by using the Worker Rush for that one ultimate portrait inspired our anonymous hero to take a second look at the article. As the build is inherently a bad one, Liquipedia would never recommend or teach it to people. However, since it does occur on the ladder still, our fondly nicked Mysterion took the time to explain why it is a terrible build and how to deal with it.
The problem with a worker rush is that if your opponent has built even one more worker, your attack force will surely be outnumbered. -Mysterion
This is it kids. You put yourself at a terrible disadvantage by doing this, plus you lose mining time as you make your way to his base. Your hopes are basically to throw your opponent off or that's he's really bad - and that's never a good mindset when you're trying to improve. Still though, people seem to struggle with this. Fear no more bronze brethren! Mysterion provides...
These two key points, the Why and the How, are pivotal to a good, relevant article. We are proud of Mysterion, our anonymous contributor who stepped up and made the necessary changes: the bulldozer was removed and the article is there for all to see and improve. Check it out!
As to the hero of today's story: We don't know who he is! So remember guys, when making please login so everyone knows who to be thankful of (you can use your TeamLiquid ID and Password!).
As to improving - the article may not seem like much yet - the basics are there but there's so much room for extra bits of info. Remember the a wiki is open source - everyone can add to it. Be it a bit historic relevance or a piece of conducted e-science (shoutout to ultilol!): you too can add something that others can learn from!
In other news: We reached a thousand pages. That's 1000. Three zeros. Fuck yeah. And we hereby would like to congratulate Blueblister and Salle on their promotions to editor! Good work guys, keep it up

I remember when I made one correction on Liquipedia, I think it was like the number two -> three and I told everyone in #liquipedia of what I had done, I felt so proud ^^
good job on the 1000

Don't know what's more entertaining/amazing, Mysterion or this Article about him.
If only I knew how Wikipedia actually worked instead of having to fight with it for 30 mins before I can make one decent edit. I blame laziness and lack of time.
|
Awesome, I finally know what to do against worker rushes!
|
I have had some serious issues with this man. I always get a panic attack when i am rushed.
|
I approve! Comprehensive knowledge INC! It includes pages like these!
Also epic mind games.
|
Yay 1000!!
Great work guys, keep it up :D
|
We be awesome!
Now ppl, go contribute!
|
I've actually won with this twice in ladder during the beta, it took probably 40 games I think but I had a point to prove and I did.
|
I think this information is far too important to just blindly give away.
|
Fuck Mysterion, Mintberry Crunch is our real saviour and salvation!
|
Thats awesome.
Funny thing is, some people really do have trouble with this. This page does have good advice for them.
|
I actually won a game in Diamond doing that. Catching people off guard is always a good thing, especially if they NEVER expect it

The coon is disappointed with this.
Fun read TL, thanks, I had no idea there actually was a worker rush page

I find it hard to believe you can still catch people that arent low diamond with this
|
LOL did somebody really get the dark voice portrait doing this for 4000+ games?
This article made me laugh the entire time. Good read, I'm going to recommended it to every new player
|
And we hereby would like to congratulate Blueblister and Salle on their promotions to editor! Good work guys, keep it up <irony> Nice! Skipping me is a good way to tell me "go f.... yourself, we just don't like you. Your work just doesn't count." </irony> Thanks for nothing. Bye bye LP. *ragequits*

Well, the most common worker rushes are the double extractor trick with 12 drones or double chronoboosting out 13-14 probes.
None of the 6 worker rushes actually work, unless you're so much better than your opponent.
|
Thank you teamliquid, knowing how to counter this saved my marriage!
|
There is also that funny 4 worker rush that Catz did to harrass the scv that is building the barracks

Cella did the double extractor, worker rush strategy a couple of weeks ago against a progamer (who bad mannered ragequit) who had games casted at the Dallas MLG. There's a replay on Cella's mediafire page. This is the link: http://www.mediafire.com/?zz19441rhaa8eb1

Love the south park reference, when i have more time i will defiantly start helping filling out Liquidpedia
|
Yay for LP, 2000 is next . As for a worker rush... I'm feeling much more enlightened then before I read this.
|
lol, i cant believe people lose to this ^^

Looking closely at that, it was 12 workers vs 12 by the time his drones arrived, the advantage then comes from getting the first few hits in and INSANE MICRO.
|
This reminds me of a high Diamond who 6pooled me. Now when you're that high up, you're not expecting a 6pool. I fended him off, and my 4gate rolled him despite constant ling harass and a failed baneling bust. Kid was pissed.
|
hrmm auto-repair does wonders, is worker rush the hard counter to worker rush? and is that the only BO (if it counts as that) whose counter is itself?
|

You really wanted to tell someone about that didn't you? Even if it didn't relate too much to the topic.
Anyways, the rush Catz does with 3 drones is not to end the game... it is to steal mining time and slow down the other player initially. He makes sure he doesn't lose any drones, so that if he kills 1-2 scvs he has accomplished his mission.
|
Something I love about TL is how staff often refer to South Park. :')
|
If you throw one marine into your worker rush you have a GSL finalist strategy.... ;-)
|
extra points if you manage to steal mineral chunks!

I added a couple minor notes to the page based on my experience being worker rushed by a Protoss on Steppes. Despite having read how to counter the worker rush beforehand, I had lost an SCV by the time I noticed it was happening, and he ran away and restored shields after about 20 damage had been done on either side. When I finally realized I should just load & lift, I only had 1 SCV to his 3 Probes, which he sent back to mine for a while before sending them & a buddy to attack my landed CC.
While I'm pretty ashamed to have lost like that, I do think people underestimate how effective a worker rush can be.

I did it for lolz when loosing a few games. Won the 2 times i did it. (Even revealed it once "Where are my minerals? Are they on top right (his base))"
Edit: of course it was a set build since Terran is my off race, but i do know how to play it due to it being so god damn easy (i'm a protoss player)
|
Honestly, this is a pretty lackluster OP.. I am not compelled to visit or help improve Liquipedia by reading this.
|
to me it looks like a mysterion to me, anyone who seen the mysterion say yeah :D
|
I think it should be corrected for accuracy. A friend of mine used to do a 4 worker rush in BW while rebuilding with 1 worker from his initial 50 minerals. I think protoss/zerg regeneration is more beneficial to someone who can micro then repair is since repair actually cost money.
Although auto repair does make it way easier to execute :/
