[SC2B] Liquipedia Update I
March 16th, 2010 20:49 GMT
Globe-in-space designed by Silversky!
Liquipedia II has been released for about a week now, and we already have over 200 articles! Wow! If you've been under a rock and missed the big news, check out Aesop's post here.
The globe beckons...
The StarCraft 2 Beta is in full swing, full force, full time. At Liquipedia we're doing our best trying to keep up, dashing along, trying to harvest whatever bits and pieces of knowledge we can and chronicling it as the building blocks of our Wiki. Our editors are doing a fantastic job with this, shaping, molding and harnassing the flood of content streaming towards our Liquishores. While they are fighting the tide a couple of us snuck out to tell you guys the newest and latest from Wikibeach.
1. New sections! When we started out with the new wiki, we mainly focused on getting the http://wiki.teamliquid.net/starcraft2/Units , http://wiki.teamliquid.net/starcraft2/Buildings and http://wiki.teamliquid.net/starcraft2/Maps sorted out. They are the concrete foundation and, as you can see, these sections are filling up really well. We're therefore expanding to new territories:
1.1 Spells and Abilities Let's start off with one of the more intricate phenomenons of StarCraft: http://wiki.teamliquid.net/starcraft2/Spells . As we've seen in BroodWar, there's a lot more to them than most people know. Can Hallucinations be Detected? Does having 2 Guardian Shields reduce ranged attacks by 4? Can you EMP a Point Defense Drone? To answer these questions we started this section, laying out all the ins and outs about all the Spells and Abilities. Contributing is easy, copy-paste our http://wiki.teamliquid.net/starcraft2/SpellTemplate and edit away. Some pages like http://wiki.teamliquid.net/starcraft2/Graviton_Beam and http://wiki.teamliquid.net/starcraft2/Psi_Storm are already shaping up nicely, but a lot of the other spells still need a ton of work. The same story goes for our new Abilities section, along with the AbilityTemplate. We'll be looking forward to getting some helping hands with this
1.2 Players
Player pages are an interesting enigma this early in the beta of any videogame. I feel that they will be a key part of Liquipedia2 and another thing we'll have over future rivals. The problem is, it's hard to predict who deserves a page, who doesn't and even if player pages are necessary so early. This was our first problem. So I thought long and hard and came up with a checklist of what qualifies a player for a page and what content we want. With these things in mind, we have begun to build a strong list of players with good chances of sticking around and being part of the pro-scene in the future. It will be hard work and I await KeSPA's decision regarding Brood War and Starcraft 2 with a little bit of fear due to the masses of players that may need to be added, so, we best start working now! I hope that you will have your players that you support and that you help out with the pages from the beginning. My favourite, Orly, will be getting the stalker devoted fan treatment from me on his page and I hope some of you do the same. TheFallofTroy and I are hard at work to research histories, gather information and check pages and we're both happy with how the player portal is expanding! We have plans to start going straight to the players and finding out more about them through interviews and photographs, so stay tuned to the Player's pages for exclusive information and maybe, you just might learn something. -Flicky
1.3 Leagues
I love tournaments. I don't care if they're called Zotac, ESL, PlayXP, Liquibition or "Hello, Goodbye", to me they're one of the basic pillars in StarCraft. Since the beta was released we have added a total of 12 tournaments on Liquipedia 2, in reality it's more since Zotac has completed three tournaments and ESL two. And there's more coming, I'm actually anticipating so many tournaments that I've started to remake the tournament portal to make it easier for everyone to find what they're looking for. I'd also like to urge everyone who wants to get out of that embarassing bronze-division to visit the tournament pages. If a tournament happend and a replay pack was released we have a link to it, high level replays are just a few clicks away. So visit the http://wiki.teamliquid.net/starcraft2/Portal:Leagues on Liquipedia 2, download some replays and get better. -Julmust
2. Strategy Another project that we initiated is developing the http://wiki.teamliquid.net/starcraft2/Strategy section. Reporting on Strategy is one of Liquipedia's greatest assets. It is where people come to learn and it's what we take a lot of pride in. We strive to make it an equally great feature for Liquipedia II.
With the patches flooding in on top of the game itself still being in its baby phases, strategy is evolving on a daily basis. Consequently we have already had some strategic content trickling in. Today, we are officially starting to shape and fill this section making it a comprehensive, structured, well-written work of reference. To start out we'd like to implore all new contributors to use our http://wiki.teamliquid.net/starcraft2/StrategyTemplate and our http://wiki.teamliquid.net/starcraft2/Strategy_Article_Policy . These are great resources to get you started and using them will help us a lot in structuring this part of Liquipedia.
3. Patch Updates You can count on Liquipedia for being your main reference when it comes to http://wiki.teamliquid.net/starcraft2/Beta_Patch_Notes . As the beta is updated, so are we
4. Liquipedia I
With the StarCraft 2 Beta up and running and all the talk that's been going on about it, it's easy to forget that StarCraft 1 still exists and is going strong. Since "every saga has a beginning", as a certain George Lucas movie once put it, we have gone back to the beginning and filled in a lot of gaps when it comes to old StarCraft 1 maps made by Blizzard. All of Blizzard's Map of the Week, Blizzard's Map of the Month and Allied maps have been added as well as the last of the Brood War no-ladder default maps. With only the scenario maps left to be added, we have made sure that people will be hard pressed to find a map made by Blizzard that's not on Liquipedia! -Slugbreath
On another note, we're also archiving the various Foreign clans that have made the Foreign StarCraft scene great.
5. Staff updates We are happy to announce another great editor joining our ranks. Hey FallOfTroy! What have you been working on?
Flicky and myself have been hard at work on the various player pages for Liquipedia 2. We have been adding new Players and achievements as they roll in from various Beta tournaments and show matches. This way everyone knows who the big names are at this point and what they have accomplished in the Beta. Another project I have been working on is the Foreigners section of Liquipedia 1. I have been adding information about each foreigner; such as their achievements, various facts and any interviews they have done. So if you know any information about your favourite players, then feel free to add it. As there is much to do and many foreign players to write up on! How to help out Liquipedia: The best way to help out is to just jump in and edit! Don't be afraid to edit or ask questions, Liquipedia is built by its users and we can always use some more help =D -TheFallOfTroy
Congratulations to him and welcome to the madness
See you on the Wiki!

Sounds awesome guys, the amount of content on there is just incredible. It's super handy to be able to liquipedize just about anything that is unfamiliar to newer people. Liquipedia is such a great resource, however I think it is slightly underused People should start looking there first before asking questions.

Sc2 is pretty lame. bw, however, remains the best RTS ever.

Very nice guys Good job
|
the one that voted other probably meant sc2data.com which in my opinion is really good what concerns the starcraft2 data but can not really be compared to the liquipidia II, which really ROX!
Thanks mates for keeping up the good work! Love the Leagues and Players section! Its great to hang on with whats going on

The Leagues section is crazy. There is about every single tournament listed since the start of beta.
|
I love the work people in the design part do. The last change in the Leagues was fantastic, but makes harder to edit.
It took my a while to realize how the Players list work so i can edit it.

if you have a problem just drop me a PM and I'll explain it to you, its not that hard really, just seems harder

Question: How to decide which tournament has to go on liquipedia? same for players.. i really don't find very clever adding players now..game is still in beta..we are adding players on a "wikipedia" of starcraft 2 without the game? Please be serious..
|
We add all tournaments we can find information about, I have a round of 5-6 sites I go trough daily to find tournaments. If I find one I add it
As for the players, should we remove boxer, H.O.T Forever, GARMITO, ChoJJa and so on from LP1? Becuase that's a completely diffrent game compared to the early days. We're basically assuming that the players who are good early in the beta (aka. wins tournaments and such) will be good atleast in the beginning of the full launch version.
Most of the players up there spend alot of hours a day playing the game and will continue doing so when the full version comes out. I doubt that, when it launches, we'll see 10 people coming out of nowhere completely owning the scene and throwing these players off the chart
|
I think i should change my 14 gas speed into an Opening rather then a build
As it works well in ZvP and ZvT now, and it's viable in ZvZ if the map distance isn't too close
And so the small variations between the 3 mu can be later done on build, but i think 14 gas speed is pretty much an opening.
I'll play a few games and see if i can get reps probably see if i have time to talk this over on irc
As it's just 10 Overlord. 14 Extractor. Put 3 Drones on the Extractor 14 Spawning Pool. 15 Overlord. Upgrade speed and it can be done in all mu pretty effectively
but might just cut it down to 14 gas as i sometimes skip speed in zvz due to roach

You judge a player good because he has played a game for 3 weeks? seriously? The game is still unbalanced and unexploreted. I know the comments like this one seems not productive but I don't find real professional the "player list" at this stage of the game.
Your example (boxer hot,...) is totally different from the actual situation.
and about tournament: you don't understand what i mean. If i organize a tournament at my house it will go to liquipedia? i suppose it will not happen. So we have to put some requirement. Number of players? Fame of the site? Skill level? and for each of this point we have to discuss how to decide resepctable sites, skill level, etc etc

There's also the "Common Sense" bullet point that's implied. If it obviously doesn't belong in LP, then it obviously doesn't belong in LP.
Anyway, expect to see the unit pages and Strategy pages get fleshed out real soon! ^_^

I basically add players that give interviews and say that they plan to play a lot or add people who achieve things at tournaments (and featured showmatches)

awesome, its definitely in the process of becoming a great source of sc2 info

Yes I think a player such as Dimaga, who has won 2/3 zotac cups, good. I find players such as Orly who has won one zotac, finish second in another, good. I find a player such as LaLush who has gone to the quarterfinal of every single tournament he has been in, good. Also we're not professionals. We don't get paid. We don't get anything in return for editing liquipedia, besides the times we pat ourselfes on the shoulder, and quite frankly I find your tone condesending and extremely provocative. What's so wrong with adding players to the list? Even if they don't make it once the full version launches, they've still ACHIVED something. Lets say StarCraft 2 is as good as Brood War and people, 10 years from now, find a well written article about Dimaga. Lets say I 10 years from now find a well written article about Dimaga. That's nostalgia. We're not just creating a wiki imo, we're creating a historic document.
Why arent you arguing about us adding the patch notes? They're COMPLETELY irrelevant once the game has launched. Should we delete those? No, it'll be a fun thing to go back in a few years and laugh at how overpowerd X unit was in the beta.
And are you REALLY complaining about what we put on liquipedia? I decide what I feel is neccesary to add to liquipedia. So do you, so do everyone else who edits it. That's the main thing: if there's intrest in something regarding SC2 it should be on liquipedia. Look at the tournaments portal, I've made almost every single thing there. Tell me one thing, just one fucking thing, that does not belong there. One tournament. Is it the Zotac cup? Who will run weekly with 100 euro to the winner? Is it the ESL weekly who also runs every week but does not give out prizemoney? Maybe liquibition because I mean my god what a silly thing to do. No cash prizes, just two guys playing while its being streamed. Nothing special at all.

It will end up back on there, we're just doing a bit of fiddling with it .
Ludwig, I understand your opinion and I understand that you may feel it un-necessary but it's part of the wiki and I think it is important. Yes, it's early beta and the players will all be better in a few months, but a great part of it is prediction of who will be worth looking at. Say a player wins a tournament in a year, I would not want to have to trawl through old pages and articles to find out their Starcraft 2 history which is why we're documenting it now. Doing the work as we go along is the sensible way to do it. I think you should read through Slugbreath's recent post on the The Anthill of Starcraft. If the information is there now, it is not damaging anybody, but if it is not there in the future, it is.
This is all assuming that you read the newspost where I went over our criteria for which players we are adding. In case you missed the link, here is is again: Talk:Portal:Players. If you have any more concerns about this content, feel free to send a member of staff a PM, or find us on IRC.

You are taking it too emotional. In my opinion you did not understand the point of my posts. Pherpas i have to say that I have editeted Liquipedia I and that I will edit Liquipedia II as much as i can to make(for what i know), so I am interested in making Liquipdia a better place not to throwing shit to your work. And with this feeling I post my idea. My only fear is that liquipedia could become a "trash can" where everyon will put his own profile or friends' one. The main thing I was asking are more "Common Criteria". As now they seem to be to generalists and I would like more stricted ones

The main thing I was asking are more "Common Criteria". As now they seem to be to generalists and I would like more stricted ones It's a common misconception that "loose criteria" equal "free for all (= total chaos)". We are carefully judging each addition, discuss the "notability" of the player added, and you are welcome to voice your concerns about specific players on their talk-page.
That means, despite not offering rough-and-ready criteria that would have to be bent in any and every direction once we meet "reality", we have standards that are applied, maintained and which we believe to be successful so far.

Great effort with the liquipedia guys. I kinda don't get the purpose of the poll, despite the current status of it the sc2 liquipedia is still incomplete and the old one is allot more useful. To the question what WILL i use more i say the new TLWiki 2.

I will start editing but first I need to know how do we keep track of information that is valid for specific patches? At the moment I have only seen a "warning" on the strategy sections.
http://wiki.teamliquid.net/starcraft2/3_Warpgate_Rush_(vs._Protoss)
My suggestion is that you introduce some kind of "patch variable" that admins can set globally and all pages need a revise after each sc2 patch or if possible do some check at dates. Pages not updated since last sc2 patch gets a warning in the start of the article.

All directly relevant pages to whatever gets changed by a patch gets changed almost immediately, same with Patch Notes. It does take a while for the implications of the patch to get figured out though, so that's why we're holding off on other articles that are relevant to past patch changes. Don't worry, it'll get sorted out eventually . As for adding a "patch variable", I'm not exactly sure if that's possible at this point without changing every page individually.
Although for that specific case, I think it's clear at this point that the rush is no longer viable.

Of course, changes in unit stats and so on get changed pretty fast, no doubt about that but I was thinking about e.g. the new strategy categories/modular thinking and "warnings" for old strategies. I'll explain with an example.
--- Example 1 - The current state of the wiki --- After each patch nothing special happens unless someone goes into a strategy article and adds a box with a "warning" like the 3 warpgate rush page has now.
--- Example 2 - Another way of thinking --- All strategy articles get a php script or similiar running at the top of each article that will print a box with a "warning" that says "This strategy hasn't been updated since <date>/<patch> and may be out of date".
The pros with this one is that all strategies listed that doesn't have the warning has been approved by someone as a viable strategy in the latest patch, some kind of quality assurance and this will make it easier for new players to find a strategy that is up to date.
Perhaps it creates to much work to go thru all articles after each patch...but that is something that has to been done anyway sort of.

Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet!

it feels like the protoss strategy has not been updated for quite a while and is on some parts incomplete.
I dunno how that is for the terran or zerg because its not my main race and I don't really know that much about them to see if its the same deal.
I myself find great use in the builds that are shown there and was wondering if the community could add more to this for example the PvP part only has 1 or 2 strategies showing but I reckon there are more right ?
as P player I find that playing against another P can sometimes be quite frustrating
