i'm not insulted? but yes, it would be easy to get the impression that you think the players here aren't competitive from some of your posts. i don't know that you've even closely looked at the community here so lol obviously it's not personal even if you did mean that
regardless...if we're going back to analogies, and you're sitting in a classroom where the goal is to teach chess or just have a game day after a test or something, you'd have one group of players where you may need to implement certain methods to make sure they don't game the system
those players by definition would be different than the players who joined a chess club or went to tournaments, who wanted to play the game and be the best at it for the sake of it
the second group of players you might find the occasional cheater within, but in general it's not going to be a big problem because the goal is not just to win, but to win by being the best. which is why this community doesn't have a lot of problems as you're describing, and why feathers get ruffled when you suggest this has something to do with the level of competitiveness
anyway, i wish you luck! that system sounds good for college students or coworkers, especially as a team-building get-to-know the people you're around every day sort of deal ^^
I am not big on political correctnes, so my arguments may look like trash talking sometimes. I'm sorry if anyone got offended although I think nobody did...
Of course if people didn't like the en-passant rule, it wouldn't be implemented in the official rule set. There would maybe be two versions of chess, each with its own community.
If I drew 5 cards while playing Texas Hold 'Em, everyone can see me (the dealer can see me) taking 5 cards. Because this can be easily noticed, the rules that prevent it are easily enforced.
I can even drop the argument that a game should not rely on players' moral and honesty. And that laws in general should rely as little as possible on peoples' moral and honesty.
What remains is: My game includes certain aspects that are outside of bounds of accepted behaviour in the forum Mafia. People can think of it as a different game. Kind of like Omaha compared to Hold 'Em. It may be considered that it only increases the variance and randomness. Or it may be valued for some of the new aspects it introduces.
I value this discussion more than the potential audience I would maybe get somewhere else...
I just... don't see the problem with forum mafia and we get the ability to filter all the players + have a nice community + have vote counts with names and stuff over the whole game (haven't checked if you have all that stuff). It's highly competitive and the rules are there because of the medium we use (forum), which I don't have a problem with. We focus more on the analysis and use good faith rules rather than full on hardcore lying in any means possible even if cheating (not cheating) is possible.
I understand. That's great. I have limited experience playing Mafia on a forum.
My starting point was playing Mafia in a group of ~15 friends where we all knew each other and were frequently studying together or simply spending time together. In my case the games quickly got "out of hand" with screenshots and personal communication... So I came up with a way to patch up the concept so that even in cases such as mine, the game could be played with no interruptions.
Now I'm out of college and don't have a chance to organize Mafia games as often. And this simple version of the game is more or less complete... So I try to find people online to tell them about it...
In my game there are generally less information publicly available. Voting is private. There is a specific role that has a power to see the vote count at the end of the day. When someone dies, it is not immediately displayed what was their role. There is another role that has the ability to check the exact roles of the dead players. And various stuff like that... in time I realized that my game ostensibly makes it more difficult for innocents to win. As the game is played between people who see each other every day, people are required to gather as much of these basic infromation through communication with each other.
I feel it is more noob-friendly than a forum and could attract ppl who are less computer oriented because a player doesn't have to type anything if they don't want to... They can just keep talking and socializing with the same people like every other day. There are basically 2-3 buttons to use after entering a game.
like...mafia is kinda about guessing anyway but the idea is that you should be able to figure it out through analysis with the information available (whether you actually do or not is another thing entirely)
to have so much information obscured leaves it much more up to chance. like even when i'm glaringly wrong about things i can go back after the game and go oooooh i should have noticed that, and try to improve that way, but if that information isn't available to begin with it's more like playing dice or something
edit: just saw your edit. yeah i guess that makes more sense for a group of people who see each other you're right xP lol just wouldn't work here at all
But I also took the approach to start with the minimal amount of publicly available information. And figured... it'd be easy for me to add more public info if the game becomes too dicy.
Or, if the game becomes too dicy, it's just another way of saying that it became too easy for the Mafia to win. In that case I think I would rather consider inventing different power roles for the innocents. Some roles that would make players decide in what way or in what direction they want a certain information to spread. I mean, there are a lot of possibilities
So you've come up with a website for mafia games for people who see each other IRL everyday, and you decided to advertise for it on a forum where people live all around the world, and most of whom only communicate through mafia games?
My brother has been a member on this forum for a long time. Playing and watching StarCraft mostly. But he told me that there is an active Mafia community here. So I decided to see what the people here have to say about the concept.
