If you guys are referring even in part to me, I haven't been 'bitching' about my bans. I recall saying at one point that I didn't agree with my ban, but I wasn't here to contest it and I have no problem doing the time...I was only recounting that it sucks because I'm a whiny ass and it's part of my charm.
if I had to describe his playstyle, it'd be a coked up rabbit with the attention of a goldfish injecting caffeine into himself directly through an IV drip. it's like a reel of random animated shorts where things just blow up randomly

I personally am appalled by the way this thread has gone in the past few pages. You're pissed you got banned? Don't get banned. Don't have enough time to play? Don't play. Simple as that. I would LOVE to play games atm but I know I can't put in the time I'd want and I might even get modkilled. Sorry if you feel an exception should be made for you. It shouldn't. YOU broke the rules, YOU pay the price. Yes it's only a game Coag, but I'd hate to play in a forum where bad behavior was jus ignored. Imagine how much of a shithole games would become.

If you were behavior modkilled then I'm not even listening to you. You literally have NO EXCUSE for your situation. YOU brought your ban upon yourself. Not because one person hated you a tried to force you out, because the COMMUNITY made a decision to ban you for your behavior. Sucks living in a democracy sometimes but ultimately this system is waaay better than any of the alternatives I've seen posted here and there.

This whole TL Mafia library thing seems fine for modkills, it will show that people want to be a part of the community and are willing to put time into it which is what the concept of sitting out games does.

Finally, @BM PLEASE stop posting in this thread until January 1st 2012. You were banned. Twice. You're EXTREMELY lucky to be getting a THIRD chance. You posting doesn't speed up time but instead shows that you really haven't learned anything at all over the course of your bans.

This discussion needs to end. The ban list is fine. Don't get banned and you never have to deal with it.

I'm not saying I don't agree with you but the banlist is not a democracy lol.

ALERT

As an addendum to the community service offer, we are going to require that, if you are collecting game data, that at most 1 game can be a mini game. This is to ensure that people who may come late are not stuck doing all the games like XVIII (game had 52 players and lasted until there was about 7). This way, everyone who participates will be doing a somewhat similar amount of work.

TL News will not be giving updates on this situation, because record keeping makes for rather uninteresting news.

Instead we will be inciting riots in... I mean, uh, reporting on the rumored soon to begin riots in SC2 Strategy!

First lemme say.. I have always had alot of respect for you meap and I hope you dont take this the wrong way but everything you said was pretty much bullshit.

The ban list doesnt work. People WILL always be modkilled in games no matter what kind of "rules" you make. The fact that there are hundreds of people on the list that are banned and we have 100+ pages of ban "x player" discussion should pretty much confirm that having a ban list for modkills doesnt stop modkills it just pisses all over the community and its contributors.
It clearly does nothing considering there are modkills EVERY game still.

Also I just wanted to point out that I had HIGHLY encouraged you guys to set up a system that allows players to contribute to writing up game summarys and posting data instead of using a ban list over a year ago. Im glad you guys are taking a step in the right direction.

First lemme say.. I have always had alot of respect for you meap and I hope you dont take this the wrong way but everything you said was pretty much bullshit.

The penal system doesnt work. People WILL always kill other people in life no matter what kind of "rules" you make. The fact that there are hundreds of people on the list that are murderers and we have 100+ pages of death row inmate discussion should pretty much confirm that having a punishment for murder doesnt stop murder it just pisses all over the community and its contributors.
It clearly does nothing considering there are murders EVERY day still.

Also I just wanted to point out that I had HIGHLY encouraged you guys to set up a system that allows players to contribute to writing up game summarys and posting data instead of using a ban list over a year ago. Im glad you guys are taking a step in the right direction.

I was going to point out why your argument was stupid, but I decided it would be more fun to just madlib the shit out of your post so you see how ridiculous your logic is in any context you try to use it.

That's not RoL's point Coag. He's right - punishing modkills DOES dissuade modkillable offenses, no matter how you're looking at it. If you disagree with the punishment that's one thing, but don't use straw-men to try and argue your point in a mafia community.

My first and only modkill scared me shitless and I've never done it again =X

anecdotal experience only, not real argument for the current state of the ban list.

I definitely think there IS a better way of doing things and that currently the system is a bit archaic/byzantine but have no idea how to implement it without some sort of bot or automated tracking program.

Playing forum mafia does require notable real life commitment though (otherwise we would just sign up whenever we want instead of worrying about our schedule before doing so). Nothing sucks for the mod or player when the game they have been playing for while becomes ruined by easily preventable mod-kill.

While strict, I do not see ban list being overthrown soon; better way might be to lessen the severity of punishment depending on that player's overall activity level (for instance, people who get mod-killed 10% of his/her games definitely should not be held accountable as much as someone who get banned 50% of the time. To my knowledge when you get a ban, it's permanent in that it never goes away and I never understood that).

Your argument had one assumption and one conclusion. The assumption was that we can't fully stop modkills from happening, and your conclusion was that we shouldn't punish people because it will still happen.

Your argument had nothing about accountability and recidivism in it which is the biggest reasons the ban list existed. You made an argument not even worth fully responding to.

This is why the banlist exists. Or why would Chaoser have any issue with signing up and dropping out of games if he was too busy? Then just coming back later. We create accountability through the banlist, which discourages inactivity. As is ALWAYS stated, before the banlist inactivity and modkills were exceptionally worse.

I'm sorry I offended you Coag, my post was a lot more aggressive than it should have been. That being said, I feel you missed my point. We have rules for a reason. Just because we still have modkills doesn't mean the rules aren't working. You keep saying that it's just a game and that's true, however games have rules. I wouldn't want to play in a forum where anyone could do whatever they wanted. Yes, it's very inconvenient to run afoul of the rules, but the rules wouldn't mean anything if people kept getting exceptions.

And yes calling this forum a democracy isn't 100% accurate but my point was that we have community agreed upon rules. If a few people don't want to follow them or want exceptions then they're disrespecting the work that people have put into TL Mafia to make it the place it is.

If the ban list were to disappear today I would save a copy and use it for my own games. I'm sure I'm not the only host who would do that.

I definitely think the system should be more nuanced though. Right now it's kind of a one size fits all and I think players who have shown themselves to be contributing and long standing members of the community that have proven themselves should definitely get some leeway or leniency. Kind of like TL's banlist but for us.

We talked about this when we first made the banlist, but decided against it because we were worried about elitism. I don't know how worried we still are about that, but I do know that usually the individual hosts and the people here tend to give more slack to the veteran players, so it's passively built into the system at least.

I don't think most players would object though if say BC's or DrH's bans were treated with a bit more leniency.

And I feel like currently the system is so inflexible (you either follow the system or you're on our own). There's no choice to follow the system but allow for exceptions in regards to allowing banned players to play in the game. If someone isn't following the banlist then people who mess up the game can't be added to the list.

The one issue I have with the current system is that there's very little we can do if one person ins for every game and you don't want to play with that person. That's where wisdom of the crowds would help. Banlist is fine for inactivity modkills but for everything else it's inadequate.

Ok so what if the banlist was only used for inactivity bans and everything else was self policed? Hosts would have to be up to date about what people have done in games though. I guess we can have like a listing or something for that instead of the ban list.
