TL Mafia XVIII
GAME OVER
+ Show Spoiler +
*flamewheel91 is helping me co-host this game. Any questions or night actions can be directed towards him or me.
Important Posts: Day 1 Night 1 Day 2 Night 2 Day 3 Night 3 Day 4 Night 4 Day 5 Night 5 Day 6 Night 6 Day 7
Please remember to be considerate to your fellow players. If you have signed up for this game, it is expected that you participate actively. Inactivity will not be tolerated this game. One missed vote and you're out (unless you notify me before hand).
Intro: Mafia is an educated guessing game of epic proportions. It's much like a game of poker because mafia members are also part of the town during the day and may manipulate the vote to their liking.
This mafia game works slightly different than the normal ones featured here on TL, so I'll explain it a bit more. First off, the game will feature two mafia families, who have different objectives than the normal game. Each mafia family's objective is to eliminate the other mafia team. They do not have to eliminate the town in order to achieve victory. The town, on the other hand, must eliminate 8/10 mafia from both families in order to win. As usual, during the night mafia will collectively decide on and send in their hits to me, who they want dead (it's a good idea to discuss them during day so you know ahead of time). Any player with a special role that can act during the night must PM me their actions each and every night.
The game is typically very active and there are usually numerous walls of text to wade through. If you are not a person who likes reading then I highly suggest you don't play the game because it is essential to being informed within the game. I will not compensate for ignorance.
Rules: (subject to change)
Posting Etiquette: In the past, many players have complained or quit because of the excessive bm and pointless flaming. If you are posting agressively and know you couldn't get away with it anywhere else on this site, it probably isn't ok here. Besides, contrary to what you may think, yelling at someone is a great way to convince people to disagree with your arguments. Please do not post inappropriately, or it will earn you a warning based on mod discretion. If you choose to ignore the warning, you will be modkilled. Examples of inappropriate posts include excessive cursing and vulgarity, among other things.
Cheating: Cheating includes (but is not limited to) the following and will get you banned from future games: 1. Posting/talking with live players after death. One polite goodbye post is acceptable but please do not post anything which could POSSIBLY affect the game. 2. Betraying your role and ruining the game for everyone by doing something like hand out your mafia's member list to the town. 3. Logging on to someone else's account / checking their PMs / looking over someone's shoulder to get their role. 4. Comparing role PM times to determine roles. 5. Posting screenshots of your inbox. This is not a photoshop competition. 6. Posting any PM you receive from a host. 7. Changing your profile / sig / possible clue material after the game begins, whether you are mafia or not. You'll be caught and just look more suspicious anyway. 8. Editing posts. Editing posts is not allowed for any reason. The mods can see your edits, and if you are caught, you will look suspicious.
Voting rules: 1. You must post your vote in the Vote Thread (which will be in a separate thread in the mafia forum). Do not PM or IM it to me. 2. You must clearly declare and bold your vote in this format ie: "I vote to lynch Chuiu". 3. You can not autochange your vote to the losing or winning bandwagon. 4. You cannot vote for yourself or anyone dead or outside the game. 5. In the event of a tie the person with the most votes first wins over the other person. 6. You may abstain, but must let me know: ie: "I abstain from voting". 7. Voting is mandatory. You must vote or abstain.
Modkills: Inactivity has been a problem in every mafia game so far. Modkills will be used as inactivity will be strongly frowned upon. The rules are simple. If you ever fail to either vote or abstain in the voting thread, then you will be modkilled. Exceptions to this rule may be granted if a) you notify me that you will be missing the vote in advance, and b) you have shown that you are otherwise active in the thread. Abstaining votes will be allowed, but please don't do it just because you don't want to read the thread.
Anyone who is modkilled may not play in one of my games until they have proven themselves to be active players in another game. I am hoping I never have to modkill anyone. Please remain active so I do not have to. If you do not believe you can maintain the required level of activity, please PM me before the game begins so that you can be replaced.
Signups: Signups for this game are open. However, priority will be given to those people who have received invites or have proven themselves to be active in past games. We are aiming to fill the game for about 50 players.
Clues: Every day post will tell a story describing the deaths of your murdered neighbors. These stories will leave behind clues pointing towards the mafia members. Clues can be taken from anywhere, so long as I see it relating to the person they are intended for. This means names, sigs, profiles, things related to names, etc.
To facilitate clue making, we are requesting that you spice up your profile and include:
- a profile picture - a quote with the author of the quote named AND - some text plus whatever else you want in your public profile page.
Time Cycle: This game will follow a strict 24 hour night/48 hour day cycle. In case I am not around at the end of the day/night, any votes after the 48 hour mark will not count and the game will be put on halt until the night post is up.
The Election:
I would ask that potential candidates do NOT begin their campaigns before the game starts. I believe doing so interferes with the atmosphere of the game and provides a level of sincerity that should not be part of the game. With this in mind, I would ask the voters not to consider running before the game begins as a perk to a player's candidacy.

Role List:
This is a semi-open setup. Roles will be disclosed, but role counts will remain hidden. Read this section carefully, it may be subject to change. Important: This game has two mafia families.
Faction win conditions:
The town must eliminate at least 8 members of each family AND must outnumber the surviving mafia. The Gambino family must eliminate the Sumiyoshi family. The Sumiyoshi family must eliminate the Gambino family.
Townie You may just be a normal player but you are the backbone of the town. Your goal, with the special roles of the town, is to help bring the Mafia to justice. You get no special powers but the ability to vote during day. Blue Roles may look pretty but the real power lies with you!
Detective You have the ability to make night investigations. Every night, you may use one of the following options: A. You may use one Role Check B. You may use one Clue Check and two Clue descriptions C. You may use two Clue Checks and one Clue description
Role check: What role does X have? (Where X is a player's name) Clue Check: Does X contain a clue that points to Y? (Where X is part of a Day post and Y is a player's name. X may not be longer than one sentence.) Clue Description: Is X a clue? (Where X is a part of the Day post. X may not be longer than one sentence.)
There are no limitations to the number of times that you may use each ability throughout the course of the game.
Medic You have the ability to prevent one hit on a player of your choice during the night. Each paramedic can only stop one hit and as such if the number of mafia is greater than the number of paramedics on a player then that player will die. You will know if you saved the person. The person will know if he was saved. If you are protecting a veteran, and they are hit, your ability supercedes theirs. You cannot protect yourself. A medic can protect someone the night she/he gets killed. They won't be notified of their save though, since they are dead.
Mad Hatter You may lay bombs on one player per night (maximum 2). If you are killed you will throw the switch and detonate them, killing the players (if they aren't protected by extra night lives, paramedics, or bodyguards). You may remove any number of them from players at any time during the night to get them back, but if a player is lynched with one on them while the you are still alive you lose that bomb for good. Bombs are refunded if the target is killed during the night.
Veteran You get two night lives instead of one! This means it takes at least two successful hits in one night to kill you, or one hit on each of two separate nights. A veteran will be told when they lose one of their night lives. If you get lynched, you die, regardless of whether you have an extra night life remaining.
Mayor You are the winner of the election. You have to PM me before the end of Day 1 with the name of the player you would like lynched on Day 1 if you win. You can't choose the Pardoner as the Day 1 lynch victim. Your votes count as three votes instead of one. You cannot be Role Checked by a DT. You are the only person who knows who the bodyguards are.
Pardoner You are the secondary elected role of the game; the runner up in the election. You may pardon a person who is to be lynched two times per game. You may use this ability on the mayor's first lynch. If you use this ability during a double lynch, each pardon spares one player (so you must use both pardons to completely stop a double lynch). You may not pardon yourself. You cannot be Role Checked by a DT.
Bodyguard You are the protectors of the elected roles. As long as you remain alive the Mayor and Pardoner are both immune to all hits during the night. Only the Mayor knows the Bodyguards identities. But be warned. Each mafia family has the option, by the time of the Mayor election, to substitute up to two of their members for Bodyguards. Mafia Bodyguards, with the exception of the Godfather, show up as Mafia to Rolechecks and do not protect the Mayor/Pardoner unless the Mayor/Pardoner is in the same mafia family as the mafia Bodyguard. The remaining number of Bodyguards are randomly selected from Green Townies after the election. Town-aligned bodyguards show up as Bodyguard to Role Checks.
Miller You are a townie in every way except that if a DT Role Checks you, the DT will be told you are a Mafia. You are told that you are a townie, but will be revealed to be a Miller upon your death. You are aligned with the Town, and win if they win.
Mafia The game features two families: The Gambino family, and the Sumiyoshi family. To win the game, you must eliminate the other mafia family. Your ability, as a group, is killing off whomever you decide on at night and knowing the role of each other player in your mafia family. You may kill your own members. You also must choose the Godfather from among yourselves. If you do not choose by night 1, I will randomly choose for you.
Godfather You have the ability to decide what role you will appear to be when a Detective role checks you. It may be any role and must be chosen Day 1 or you will default to Townie. After your role is chosen you may not change it after that; decisions are final for the whole game.
Double Lynch
Usable three times per game, the town lynches two people instead of one. This means on the next day everyone gets two votes to distribute between two different people. The double lynch is activated by voting for it in addition to a player (or players if a double lynch is currently activated). The vote must exceed half the number of players voting that day. IE: If there are 40 players voting then the town needs 21 votes to use a double lynch. Double lynches may be voted on starting Day 2. Double lynches may be used on consecutive days. Players cannot place all of their votes on one player when a double lynch is in effect.

Sweet... lets get this party started...
Just curious as to why we have the 48 hour days? To be honest in that last game we had the activity to do 24 hours days.
|
I guess the 48h clock did help us when we went after DrH - it gave us a full day to observe and egg the mafia along.

In our game meeple we needed those 48 hour days because there were periods where no one posted anything for hours. I think this game will be really interesting seeing as how the mafia won't be interested in killing townies, and will make the mafia also do a bit of clue analysis to figure out who the opposite family is. DT's will be valuable to both mafia and townies this game.

A few questions...
1. If a DT successfully ties a clue to a mafia member / RCs a mafia member, will that DT be told what family the mafia member belongs to? If the answer is yes, will millers appear to be from a random mafia family to DTs?
2. As far as I can see, it's a no-brainer for the mafia families (who don't have the mayor/pardoner among their ranks) to substitute their own members for bodyguards. Am I missing something?
3. As soon as one mafia family falls down to 2 or fewer members, they've essentially lost the game- they cannot win, because either they will be wiped out (the other mafia family wins), or they will reduce the other mafia family to 1-2 members in which case the Town wins. What incentive is there for this mafia family to keep playing, considering they cannot win? Will they have some kind of secondary objective, like a consolation prize? e.g. maybe a secondary objective of theirs would be to not be wiped out, in which case once they fall down to 2 members, they have to push for a Town win rather than let the other mafia family win.
4. What happens in the hypothetical case that all 30 Town members are dead, and after they all die, both families are reduced to 1-2 members each? Does the Town still win?
5. Why does the Gambino Family have a much cooler name than the Sumiyoshi Family?

You can't just retire from the mafia! They'll kill ya! Haven't you ever seen the movies. Though I suppose if there is no one left to kill you, you're good lol.

So in the end the victory objective for the mafia changes to... killing the entire town? I don't see it... + Show Spoiler +I guess we could have 2, or even 3 families who are unaware of each other, but they should still aim to kill the town, no?
|
I think if a mafia ends up down to 1-2 players and can't win anymore, their objective just turns to playing spoiler for whichever faction they choose (the other family or the town). I think the natural choice would be the other family - since their original objective was to wipe them out. They can't win, but they can make someone lose.
